Five new movies are opening in theaters nationwide this weekend:

Expected to top the weekend box office is the sci-fi action adventure Pacific Rim Uprising directed by Steven S. DeKnight and starring John Boyega, Scott Eastwood, Jing Tian, Cailee Spaeny, Rinko Kikuchi, Burn Gorman, Adria Arjona and Charlie Day.  The film’s original music is composed by Lorne Balfe (The LEGO Batman MovieHome12 StrongTerminator GenisysGeniusThe Crown). Milan Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as songs by Wizkid, DJ Shadow and Anderson .Paak. Click here for the full album details.

Also opening wide is the animated feature Sherlock Gnomes directed by John Stevenson and featuring the voices of James McAvoy, Emily Blunt, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Maggie Smith, Michael Caine, Ashley Jensen, Matt Lucas, Stephen Merchant, Mary J. Blige and Johnny Depp. Chris Bacon (Source Code, Bates Motel) who previously co-scored Gnomeo & Juliet has composed the film’s original score. Elton John has composed new songs for the project, including the track Stronger Than I Ever Was, which is performed by Mary J. Blige. No word yet on a soundtrack release. The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) announced that composer John Powell will be honored at the 33rd Annual Screen Music Awards (previously known as ASCAP Film and Television Music Awards) on May 23, 2018 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, CA. Powell will receive the Henry Mancini Award, which is given to composers for outstanding achievements and contributions to the world of music for film, television and visual media. Sony Classical has released a soundtrack album for the romantic drama Heartbeats. The album features the film’s original score composed by Gingger Shankar (Circumstance, American Fable). Also included are the original songs from the movie by Roc Nation. The soundtrack is now available to download on Amazon, where you can also listen to audio samples. Heartbeats is written and directed by Duane Adler and stars Krystal Ellsworth, Aneesha Joshi, Daphne Zuniga, Amitash Pradhan, Paul McGillon, Justin Chon, Salman Yusuff Khan and Megan Alexander. The movie follows a young American college student with dreams of being a professional dancer who travels to India with her family for a week long Indian wedding and falls in love with a new style of dance, and with a young man who introduces it to her. Jeff Russo (Fargo, Star Trek: Discovery, Legion, Snowfall, The Night Of) is the new composer of the Netflix original series Santa Clarita Diet. The composer has scored the second season of the show created by Victor Fresco and starring Drew Barrymore, Timothy Olyphant, Liv Hewson and Skyler Gisondo. The comedy follows a married couple leading vaguely discontented lives in the L.A. suburb of Santa Clarita with their teenage daughter until the wife goes through a dramatic change sending their lives down a road of death and destruction. Fair Trade Services has released a new soundtrack album for the faith-based drama I Can Only Imagine. The album features the songs from the movie performed by lead actor J. Michael Finley, including the title track written by Bart Millard and performed in its original version by the Christian band MercyMe. Also included are selections from the film’s original score composed by Brent McCorkle (Unconditional, Steve McQueen: American Icon). The soundtrack is now available to download on Amazon, where you can also listen to audio samples. Cliff Martinez (Drive, Traffic, Solaris, Contagion) has recently composed the music for the upcoming thriller Hotel Artemis. The film is written and directed by Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation) and stars Jodie Foster, Sterling K. Brown, Sofia Boutella, Jeff Goldblum, Brian Tyree Henry, Jenny Slate, Zachary Quinto, Charlie Day and Dave Bautista. Milan Records will release the official soundtrack album for the biblical drama Mary Magdalene. The album features the film’s original music composed by Hildur Guðnadóttir (Sicario: Day of the Soldado, Strong Island) and Jóhann Jóhannsson (Arrival, The Theory of Everything, Sicario, Prisoners). The soundtrack will be released digitally overseas tomorrow, March 23. Mary Magdalene is directed by Garth Davis (Lion) and stars Rooney Mara, Joaquin Phoenix, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Tahar Rahim. The movie tells the story of Mary, a young woman in search of a new way of living, who defies her traditional family to join a new social movement led by the charismatic Jesus of Nazareth and soon finds a place for herself within the movement and at the heart of a journey that will lead to Jerusalem. Composer and synth experimentalist Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith is making her major feature film scoring debut on the upcoming indie comedy Duck Butter. The film is directed by Miguel Arteta (The Good Girl, Cedar Rapids, Beatriz at Dinner) and stars Alia Shawkat, Laia Costa, Mae Whitman, Hong Chau and Kate Berlant. The movie centers on aa one-night stand between two women that turns into a sexual experiment to have sex every hour for 24 hours. Arteta and Shawkat have also co-written the screenplay. Mel Eslyn (The One I Love, Blue Jay) and Natalie Qasabian (Searching) are producing the project. Read the rest of this entry »

The full details of the soundtrack album for Wim Wenders’ drama Submergence have been revealed. The album features the film’s original music composed by Fernando Velazquez (The Impossible, Mama, The Orphanage, Hercules, A Monster Calls). The soundtrack will be released next month by Varese Sarabande. Visit Amazon to pre-order the CD version, which is currently set for a release on April 27. Submergence starring James McAvoy, Alicia Vikander, Alexander Sidig, Celen Jones and Reda Kateb centers on the relationship between a British agent working undercover and a bio-mathematician working on a deep-sea diving project.
