The Newton Brothers are scoring the upcoming crime thriller Life of Crime. The film is directed by Daniel Schechter (Supporting Characters) and stars Jennifer Aniston, John Hawkes, Yasiin Bey (aka Mos Def), Isla Fisher, Will Forte, Mark Boone Junior and Tim Robbins. The film based on the novel The Switch by Elmore Leonard (Out of Sight, Get Shorty) serves as a prequel to Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown with Hawkes and Bey playing younger versions of Robert De Niro and Samuel L. Jackson’s characters Louis Gara and Ordell Robbie. The comedy follows the duo as they plan to kidnap a corrupt real estate developer’s wife. Leonard is producing the project with Ellen Goldsmith-Vein (The Spiderwick Chronicles) and Lee Stollman (Abduction), Liz Destro & Jordan Kessler (About Cherry) and Michael Siegel.

Two new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:
Opening in the US and select international territories is the sci-fi action monster movie Pacific Rim directed by Guillermo del Toro and starring Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Rinko Kikuchi and Ron Perlman. The film’s music is composed by Ramin Djawadi (Iron Man, Game of Thrones, Clash of the Titans). WaterTower Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music, which also features former Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello and singer Priscilla as soloists. Also opening wide is the comedy sequel Grown Ups 2 directed by Dennis Dugan and starring Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade, Salma Hayek, Maya Rudolph, Maria Bello and Nick Swardson. The film’s original score is composed by Rupert Gregson-Williams (Over the Hedge, Click, Bee Movie) who previously scored the 2010 original film. No soundtrack album has been announced. The Newton Brothers to Score Wayne Kramer’s ‘Pawn Shop Chronicles’
The Newton Brothers have signed on to score the dark comedy Pawn Shop Chronicles. The film is directed by Wayne Kramer and stars Paul Walker, Matt Dillon, Brendan Fraser, Elijah Wood, Vincent D’Onofrio, Pell James, Thomas Jane, Lukas Haas, Chi McBride, Ashlee Simpson, Kevin Rankin, DJ Qualls, Michael Cudlitz and Norman Reedus. The movie centers on a missing wedding ring which leads to a wild-goose chase involving meth addicts, skinheads and an Elvis impersonator. Walker is also producing the film with Jordan Schur & David Mimran (Stone, Henry’s Crime), Nick Thurlow and Steven Schneider (Insidious, The Bay). Adam Minarovich has written the screenplay. Kramer has previously worked with composer Mark Isham on his last three features (The Cooler, Running Scared, Crossing Over).
‘High School’ Soundtrack Released
MovieScore Media has released a soundtrack album for the teen comedy High School. The album features the film’s original score composed by The Newton Brothers (Detachment, Setup). The soundtrack has been released today and is now available to download on iTunes, where you can also check out audio clips from the album. High School marks the directorial feature debut of John Stalberg and stars Adrien Brody, Michael Chiklis, Sean Marquette, Matt Bush, Adhir Calyan and Colin Hanks. The comedy was released earlier this year in theaters and is coming out on Blu-Ray and DVD today.

Expected to top the weekend box office is Universal Pictures’ epic fantasy adventure Snow White and the Huntsman directed by Rupert Sanders and starring Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron, Lily Cole, Sam Claflin, Sam Spruell, Ian McShane, Nick Frost, Bob Hoskins, Toby Jones and Eddie Marsan. The film’s score is composed by James Newton Howard. The composer was also involved in the original song Breath Of Life by Florence + the Machine, which is featured on the soundtrack album along with the score and is available on Universal Republic. Opening in semi-wide is the historical epic For Greater Glory (aka Cristiada) directed by Dean Wright about the Cristeros War (1926-1929) and starring Andy Garcia, Eva Longoria, Bruce Greenwood, Nestor Carbonell and Peter O’Toole. James Horner has composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been announced yet. Horner recorded his score with a 100-piece orchestra in May of last year at Abbey Road Studios in London. Since our last update on the project, the film been picked up by ARC Entertainment for US distribution. More information about the film can be checked out on the official movie website.
‘Detachment’ Soundtrack Released
A soundtrack album has been released for the indie drama Detachment. The album includes the original score from the film written by The Newton Brothers. The soundtrack is now available to download on iTunes, where you can also listen to audio clips. Detachment is directed by Tony Kaye (American History X) and stars Adrien Brody, Christina Hendricks, James Caan, Lucy Lio, Bryan Cranston, Blythe Danner, Marcia Gay Harden and Tim Blake Nelson. The movie depicting three weeks in the lives of high school teachers, administrators and students through the eyes of substitute teacher premiered at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival and is now playing in limited release.

Expected to top the other films in release at the box office is the action comedy 21 Jump Street directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller and starring Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, Ice Cube, Brie Larson and Ellie Kemper. The film’s score is composed by Mark Mothersbaugh who previously collaborated with the director’s on their animated feature hit Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Opening in limited release is the Spanish-language comedy Casa de mi Padre directed by Matt Piedmont and starring Will Ferrell, Gael Garcia Bernal, Diego Luna, Genesis Rodriguez, Nick Offerman & Pedro Armendariz, Jr. Andrew Feltenstein & John Nau have written the film’s score. Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring selections from the score, as well Christina Aguilera’s title song earlier this week. The Newton Brothers to Score ‘High School’
The Newton Brothers have signed on to score the comedy High School. The composer duo is replacing Harold Faltermeyer who finished writing music for the film a while ago. The original version of the film also featured music by Freescha. The movie marks the directorial feature debut of John Stalberg and stars Adrien Brody, Michael Chiklis and Colin Hanks. The comedy centers on a high school valedictorian who gets baked with the local stoner and finds himself the subject of a drug test. Stalberg also co-wrote the script with Stephen Cusco (The Grudge). Warren Zide (American Pie, Final Destination) is producing with Ray Markovich. High School premiered at last year’s Sundance Film Festival and is currently awaiting a release date.
The Newton Brothers to Score ‘Setup’
The Newton Brothers have been hired to score the upcoming action thriller Setup. The film marks the theatrical feature directing debut of stunt coordinator Mike Gunther and stars Bruce Willis, Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson, Ryan Phillippe, Jenna Dewan, James Remar and Randy Couture. The movie revolves around a group of friends who are catapulted into the middle of a diamond heist turned deadly. Curtis Jackson is also producing the film. A trailer for the film surfaced online last month, but has disappeared from most websites since. A release date has yet to be announced, but the movie’s domestic distributor Lionsgate is expected to make an announcement soon.
