Alexandre Desplat is currently scoring the upcoming French drama Don’t Tell Me the Boy Was Mad (Une histoire de fou). The film is directed by Robert Guédiguian (The Snows of Kilimanjaro, Marius and Jeannette) and stars Simon Abkarian, Ariane Ascaride, Grégoire Leprince-Ringuet, Serge Avédikian and Syrus Shahidi. The movie follows a young man from Marseilles of Armenian origin who blows up the car of the Turkish Ambassador in Paris and later decides to meet a victim who was standing nearby and was hurt in the incident to make him his spokesman. Guédiguian has also co-written the screenplay with Gilles Taurand (Thieves, Farewell, My Queen) and also serves as a producer on the project.

Alexandre Desplat Wins Oscar for ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’
Alexandre Destplat has won his first Academy Award in the Best Original Score category for his music for Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel. The composer was previously nominated six time before and also received another nod this year for his score for The Imitation Game. The other contenders in the category were Johann Johannsspn (The Theory of Everything), Hans Zimmer (Interstellar) and Gary Yershon (Mr. Turner). All four nominated composers were in attendance at the awards ceremony.
SCL Hosts Reception for Academy Award-Nominated Composers and Songwriters
Yesterday afternoon, the Society of Composers & Lyricists (SCL) hosted its annual reception honoring the Academy Award-nominated composers and songwriters in the Best Original Score and Best Original Song category at the Cafe La Boheme in West Hollywood. Following a speech by Academy Music Branch Governor Charles Bernstein, SCL president Ashley Irwin introduced the nominees who briefly spoke to the audience. Three of the four nominated composers in the score category were in attendance, including Alexandre Desplat, nominated for the seventh and eight time for his scores for Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel and Morten Tyldum’s The Imitation Game, who talked about his experience as one of the industry’s top composers over the last decade and finding his own musical voice, while keeping his integrity.
‘Suite Francaise’ Soundtrack Details
Sony Classical will release a soundtrack album for the drama Suite Francaise. The album features the film’s original music composed by Rael Jones, as well as songs performed by Lucienne Boyer, Josephine Baker, Rosita Serrano & more. Alexandre Desplat has composed Bruno’s Piano Piece. The soundtrack will be released overseas on March 16, 2015 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Suite Francaise is directed by Saul Dibb (The Duchess) and stars Michelle Williams, Matthias Schoenaerts, Kristin Scott Thomas, Margot Robbie, Alexandra Maria Lara, Sam Riley, Ruth Wilson, Tom Schilling and Lambert Wilson. The movie is based on the works of Irène Némirovsky and follows a young woman in Nazi-occupied France who ends up falling in love with a German officer.
Alexandre Desplat Wins Grammy Award for ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’
Alexandre Desplat has won the Grammy Award for his music for Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel in the Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media category. He previously won a Grammy for his score for Tom Hooper’s The King’s Speech. The other nominated composers in the category included Christophe Beck (Frozen), Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross (Gone Girl), Steven Price (Gravity) and Thomas Newman (Saving Mr. Banks). In the Best Song Written For Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media, Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez won the award for the song Frozen from Disney’s hit feature Frozen. In the Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for Visual Media category, the soundtrack album for Frozen, which features the film’s songs and the score composed by Christophe Beck, released by Walt Disney Records was honored with a Grammy award.

Alexandre Desplat has received his second BAFTA Award for his score for Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel in the Original Music category. The composer accepted the award in person at the British Academy Film Awards ceremony at the Royal Opera House in London. Desplat previously won the BAFTA Award in 2011 for The King’s Speech and was nominated five more times. He was nominated alongside Antonio Sanchez (Birdman), Hans Zimmer (Interstellar), Johann Johannsson (The Theory of Everything) and Mica Levi (Under the Skin). The composer is also up for an Academy Award for the score and is also nominated for his music for The Imitation Game.
Alexandre Desplat Scoring Wim Wenders’ ‘Every Thing Will Be Fine’
Alexandre Desplat is composing the score for the upcoming drama Every Thing Will Be Fine. The film is directed by Wim Wenders (Paris, Texas, Buena Vista Social Club, Wings of Desire) and stars James Franco, Rachel McAdams, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Robert Naylor. The movie, which was shot in 3D, centers on a writer who accidentally causes the death of a child and follows him through the next twelve years, searching for the footprints of the accident on his life, as well as on the life of the child’s mother. Bjørn-Olaf Johannessen has written the screenplay.
‘Montage – Great Film Composers and the Piano’ Album Announced
Harmonia Mundi has announced the release of Montage – Great Film Composers and the Piano. The album features the piano works composed by six major film composers and performed by pianist Gloria Cheng. Among the pieces are original compositions by John Williams (Star Wars, E.T.), Michael Giacchino (Up, Lost) and Randy Newman (Toy Story, The Natural) who composed a piece in homage to Alfred, Emil and Lionel Newman, as well as Bruce Broughton (Silverado) and Don Davis (The Matrix). Also included is a piece from Alexandre Desplat‘s Trois Études (originally written for pianist Lang Lang). Four new movies opened nationwide on Christmas Day:
Opening in most theaters is the drama Unbroken directed by Angelina Jolie and starring Jack O’Connell, Domhnall Gleeson, Miyavi, Garrett Hedlund and Finn Wittrock. The film’s original music is composed by Alexandre Desplat (The King’s Speech, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, The Queen, The Grand Budapest Hotel). Parlophone Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music, as well as the original song Miracles performed by Coldplay. Also opening wide is the film adaptation of the Broadway musical Into the Woods directed by Rob Marshall and starring Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, James Corden, Anna Kendrick, Chris Pine, Tracey Ullman, Christine Baranski and Johnny Depp. The movie features songs composed by Stephen Sondheim (Sweeney Todd). Walt Disney Records has released two different soundtrack albums for the film featuring the songs performed by the movie’s cast.
