While there are no movies opening wide this weekend, a number of films are receiving a limited release:

The most talked about movie opening this week is the drama Shame directed by Steve McQueen and starring Michael Fassbender, Carey Mulligan, James Badge Dale, Nicole Beharie and Hannah Ware. The film’s score is composed by Harry Escott. A soundtrack album featuring three tracks from the score, as well as several songs from the film performed by artists including Blondie, Howlin’ Wolf and actress Carey Mulligan will be released on December 6 by Sony Music. Receiving an Oscar qualifying run this weekend before opening wider next year is the drama The Lady directed by Luc Besson and starring Michelle Yeoh and David Thewlis. The film’s music is written by the director’s regular musical collaborator Eric Serra. A soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as the song Soldier of Love by Sade has been released overseas by Strategic Marketing Group. Alec Puro to Score ‘The First Time’

Alec Puro has signed on to score the upcoming romantic comedy The First Time. The movie is written and directed by Jon Kasdan (In the Land of the Women) and stars Britt Robertson, Dylan O’Brien, Victoria Justice, James Frecheville, Craig Roberts, Joshua Malina, Halston Sage, Maggie Jones and Adam Sevani . The film follows two students over the first weekend of a blossoming relationship. Liz Glotzer and Martin Shafer (The Mist, Friends with Benefits) are producing for Castle Rock Entertainment. Puro is coming off scoring two independent movies that opened this summer with The Art of Getting By and the Vera Farmiga-directed drama Higher Ground, which is currently playing in theaters in select cities. The First Time is currently in post production. No word yet on a release date for the movie.

Three new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:

Opening in most theaters is the horror thriller Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark directed by Troy Nixey, produced by Guillermo Del Toro and starring Katie Holmes, Guy Pearce and Bailee Madison. The film’s music is composed by Marco Beltrami and Buck Sanders. A soundtrack album featuring the score has been released digitally earlier this week and will be coming out on CD on September 27 on Lakeshore Records. Also opening wide is the indie comedy Our Idiot Brother directed by Jesse Peretz and starring Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel, Emily Mortimer, Steve Coogan, Hugh Dancy, Rashida Jones and Shirley Knight. Nathan Larson and Eric D. Johnson composed the movie’s score. Abkco Records has released a soundtrack album including selections of the score, as well as several songs from the movie. Three new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:

Expected to top the weeekend box office is the comic book adaptation Green Lantern directed by Martin Campbell and starring Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Saarsgard and Mark Strong. The film’s music is composed by James Newton Howard. A soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score has been released by Watertower Music. Also opening wide is Mark Water’s family comedy Mr. Popper’s Penguins starring Jim Carrey, Carla Gugino, Madeline Carroll and Angela Lansbury. The movie’s score is written by composer Rolfe Kent. ‘The Art of Getting By’ Score Album released

Fox Music has released a score album for the dramedy The Art of Getting By. The album features 10 tracks from the score by composer Alec Puro and is available as a digital release on iTunes, where you can check out audio clips and download the music. ‘The Art of Getting By’ Soundtrack Details

Rhino Records is set to release a soundtrack album for the romantic dramedy The Art of Getting By. The album includes three score tracks by composer Alec Puro, as well as several songs from the movie from such artists as The Shins, Earlimart, Mates of State, Delphic, Leonard Cohen, Clap Your Hand Say Yeah, The Boxer Rebellion, Pavement and French Kicks. The soundtrack will receive a physical release on June 14, 2011 (visit Amazon to pre-order the CD) and will also be available digitally on the same day. Alec Puro’s Upcoming Projects

A composer who appears to be having his breakout year on the big screen in 2011 is Alec Puro. Two of his recent projects that premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival have been picked up by major indie studios and will be released in theaters this summer. First up in a couple of weeks is the romantic comedy The Art of Getting By (formerly entitled Homework), which tells the coming-of-age story about a high school senior who makes his way through school without doing any homework. The film is written and directed by Gavin Wiesen who makes his feature directing/writing debut on the project. The movie’s cast includes Freddie Highmore, Emma Roberts, Michael Angarano, Elizabeth Reaser, Alicia Silverstone, Blair Underwood and Rita Wilson. A soundtrack album for the film will be released on June 14, 2011 by Rhino Records and is now available to pre-order on Amazon. Check back on this page for more details about the album. Fox Searchlight picked up domestic rights for The Art of Getting By and will be releasing the indie film on June 17.
