Four new movies are opening wide over Thanksgiving weekend:

Walt Disney Pictures’ Tangled features songs and score by Alan Menken. Check out our previous article announcing the soundtrack album. Intrada Records announced a new 2 disc soundtrack release of Jerry Goldsmith’s score for the 1982 action movie First Blood. In the movie directed by Ted Kotcheff and starring Sylvester Stallone, a mentally unstable Vietnam war vet, when abused with a small town’s police force, begins a one man war with it. The album is the first release of the complete score and also includes the original 1982 soundtrack on a second disc. Varese Sarabande has announced the first CD release of John Williams’ score for Alfred Hitchcock’s Family Plot. Only the film’s end credits has previously been released. Hitchcock’s last movie stars Bruce Dern and Barbara Harris centers around a phony psychic/con artist and her taxi driver/private investigator boyfriend who encounter a pair of serial kidnappers while trailing a missing heir in California. The composer duo tomandandy has been hired to score the upcoming horror thriller The Apparition. In the movie, a couple is haunted by a supernatural presence that is unleashed during a college experiment. The film, which is currently in post-production is directed by Todd Lincoln and stars Tom Felton and Ashley Green. The Apparition is produced by Joel Silver through his Dark Castle Entertainment company and will be released by Warner Bros on September 9, 2011. Read the rest of this entry »

Composer Mark Mothersbaugh has been hired to score the upcoming documentary Born to be Wild 3D. According to Variety, the movie centers on orphaned baby orangutans and elephants receiving a second chance at life in the wild, thanks to primatologist Dr. Birute Galdikas in Borneo and elephant authority Dame Daphne Sheldrick. The documentary directed by David Lickley will be narrated by Morgan Freeman, who previously narrated the hit documentary March of the Penguins. Cliff Martinez is currently finishing up scoring the upcoming legal drama The Lincoln Lawyer. In the movie, a lawyer conducts business from the back of his Lincoln town car while representing a high-profile client in Beverly Hills. The drama stars Matthew McConaughey, Marisa Tomei, John Leguizamo, Ryan Phillippe and William H. Macy. Brad Furman directs the movie based on the best-selling novel by Michael Connelly (Blood Work). The Lincoln Lawyer marks Martinez’ first high profile movie project in several years. The Lakeshore/Sidney Kimmel Entertainment production will be released domestically by Lionsgate on March 18. Two movies open wide this weekend:

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 is already breaking pre-sales records and is expected to beat the opening weekend grosses from the previous films in the series. Alexandre Desplat wrote the score for the movie as the fourth composer in the series. Michael Andrews will compose the score for the upcoming comedy Bridesmaids. The movie is centered around two women battling to plan their friend’s wedding party. The comedy directed by Paul Feig (Unaccompanied Minors) stars Kristen Wiig, Jon Hamm and Rose Byrne. Bridesmaids is produced by Judd Apatow, who worked with Andrews on his last directorial effort Funny People. Universal Pictures is planning to release the movie on May 13, 2011. According to the film’s new trailer, Harry Gregson-Williams has been hired to score the upcoming sci-fi action movie Cowboys & Aliens. The Dreamworks movie is directed by Jon Favreau, who worked with composer John Debney on most of his movies including Elf, Zathura and Iron Man 2. Cowboys & Aliens stars Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde, Harrison Ford, Paul Dano and Sam Rockwell.The movie is set in Silver City, Arizona, where Apache Indians and Western settlers must lay their differences aside when an alien spaceship crash lands in their city. The movie is produced by Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard, Brian Grazer and co-writers Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. The movie is scheduled for a July 29, 2011 release date. Film Music Reporter has learned that Lorne Balfe will be the co-composer of Ron Howard’s upcoming comedy The Dilemma alongside Hans Zimmer, who previously has been announced as the film’s composer. In the movie, a man discovers that his best friend’s wife is having an affair. The Dilemma stars Vince Vaughn, Kevin James, Winona Ryder, Channing Tatum, Jennifer Connelly and Queen Latifah. Ron Howard and Zimmer have worked together several times before, including Backdraft, The DaVinci Code, Angels and Demons and Frost/Nixon. Balfe and Zimmer recently co-composed the score for Megamind, which is the current #1 movie in the US. Universal Pictures has scheduled a January 14, 2011 release date for the movie.
