The composer duo of Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman has been hired to score the upcoming comedy Jumping the Broom. In the movie, two very different African American families converge on Martha’s Vineyard one weekend for a wedding. The movie stars Julie Bowen, Paula Patton, Angela Bassett, Loretta Devine and Mike Epps. Jumping the Broom marks director Salim Akil’s feature directorial debut.  The Sony Pictures movie which has entered post production will be released on May 6, 2011. Tangled soundtrack album coming

Walt Disney Records will release a soundtrack album to the upcoming animated movie Tangled on November 16. Both the film’s songs and score written by Alan Menken are included on the album. The album also features the release of Grace Potter’s new song ‘Something That I Want’. To listen to sound clips from the soundtrack, visit Amazon and click here to order the CD.

New Patton soundtrack album announced

Intrada Records has announced a new release of Jerry Goldsmith’s score to Franklin J. Schaffer-directed 1970 classic Patton. The 2 disc release includes both the original soundtrack, as well as the original 1970 Fox album which Goldsmith recorded with London musicians. The depiction of the World War II phase of the controversial American general’s career starring George S. Scott and Karl Malden won seven Academy awards including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor. Goldsmith’s score was one of the film’s 10 nomination. Alexandre Desplat to finish Harry Potter series

Warner Bros has officially confirmed that Alexandre Desplat will be back as the composer for the last installment in the Harry Potter series Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. While Desplat’s attachment to the project has been expected given his involvement in the first part of the final book adaptation, there has been much speculation that John Williams might return to score the last movie of the franchise. The last movie begins as Harry, Ron, and Hermione go back to Hogwarts to find and destroy Voldemorts final horcruxes, but when Voldemort finds out about their mission, the biggest battle begins and life as they know it will never be the same again. Most of the cast & crew of the recent Potter movies including David Yates will be back for the film. Warner Bros will release the conclusion of the series on July 15, 2011. Rachel Portman’s upcoming movie projects

Rachel Portman is making a return to film scoring with a number of projects to be released in the near future. She is currently completing the score for the drama Bel Ami directed by Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod and produced Uberto Pasolini who has previously worked with Portman on The Emperor’s New Clothers. The movie chronicles a young man’s rise to power in Paris via his manipulation of the city’s most influential and wealthy women. Bel Ami stars Robert Pattinson, Christina Ricci, Uma Thurman, Kristin Scott Thomas and Colm Meaney. The drama is set in 19th century China and centers on the lifelong friendship between two girls who develop their own secret code as a way to contend with the rigid cultural norms imposed on women. David Newman to score Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son

David Newman has been hired to score the upcoming comedy sequel Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son. In the third installment in the series, FBI agent Malcolm Turner and his stepson Trent go undercover at an all-girls performing arts school after Trent witnesses a murder. The film stars Martin Lawrence, Brandon T. Jackson and Faizon Love and is directed by John Whitesell who previously Big Momma’s House 2, Deck the Halls and Malibu’s Most Wanted. David Newman follows composers Richard Gibbs and George S. Clinton who scored the other parts in the series. 20th Century Fox will release the movie on February 18, 2011. John Williams confirmed for ‘War Horse’

Film Music Reporter has been able to confirm that John Williams is officially attached to score Steven Spielberg’s War Horse. The movie follows a young man named Albert and his horse, Joey, and how their bond is broken when Joey is sold to the cavalry and sent to the trenches of World War One. The movie currently in post-production stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Emily Watson and David Thewlis. While Williams’ involvement in the movie was expected, the composer’s noticeably absence from film scoring in the past couple of years raised concerns in some circles if Williams would indeed be back to score Spielberg’s latest movie. The Dreamworks and Amblin Productions movie is scheduled to be released on December 28, 2011. Read the rest of this entry »

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader soundtrack album announced

Sony Masterworks will release the soundtrack album for the third installment in the Narnia series The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. According to composer David Arnold, the album contains 72 minutes of score, while about 90 minutes of score is featured in the movie. Carrie Underwood also contributes the original song There’s a Place for Us, co-written by David Hodges and Hillary Lindsey, which will be playing during the film’s end credits, but will not be included on the soundtrack album.

Dreamworks Animation’s latest movie features a score by Hans Zimmer and Lorne Balfe, as well as numerous popular songs. A soundtrack album featuring about 30 minutes of score, as well as most of the songs used in the movie has been released by Lakeshore Records. To listen to clips, check out Amazon or iTunes. The movie contains roughly 50 minutes of score including a very nice arrangement of the main themes during the end credits which has surprisingly been left off the soundtrack album. John Ottman scores ‘Unknown’

Film Music Reporter has learned that John Ottman is currently finishing up work on the upcoming mystery thriller Unknown (previously entitled Unknown White Male). In the movie, a man awakens from a coma, only to discover that someone has taken on his identity and that no one believes him. With the help of a young woman, he sets out to prove who he is. The movie stars Liam Neeson, January Jones, Diane Kruger, Frank Langella and Aidan Quinn. The project marks Ottman’s third collaboration with director Jaume Collet-Serra after House of Wax and last year’s Orphan. Unknown is produced by Joel Silver, who has worked with Ottman on numerous projects such as Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Gothika and most recently on this year’s The Losers.
