Deadline Hollywood reported this week that composer Alan Menken has teamed with lyricist David Zippel and comedy writer Marco Pennette for a musical comedy set up at ABC. The show is described as St. Elmo’s Fire meets Rent and centers on a young female musician living with other musicians as they try to make their way into the world. Unlike the currently airing musical TV hit show Glee and other musical TV show in development, Menken’s untitled project would feature in 2-3 songs in every episode, which given network TV’s usual yearly episode order of 22 or more would make it an extremely ambitious undertaking. The Hollywood Reporter had a chance to talk to composer Hans Zimmer about his involvement in the upcoming Superman adaptation directed by Zack Snyder, which was reported last week by NBC San Diego as reported here. The news spread last week after Zimmer did some interviews at the DVD/Blu-Ray release party for Incpetion, which according to the composer had been taken out of context. Zimmer says that at this point he has not talked with Superman‘s director Zack Snyder and is not involved in any way in the new adaptation of the comic book franchise. This, of course, doesn’t mean that he won’t be asked to score the movie, especially given his relationship with producer Christopher Nolan, but he refers to the assignment of scoring the movie and following the footsteps of John Williams as “a thankless task”, implying some hesitation in taking on scoring duties on the movie.
