Watertower Music has announced a soundtrack release for the family adventure sequel Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. The album features the original score from the film by composer Andrew Lockington who also wrote the music for Journey to the Center of the Earth. Also included on the release are two versions of What a Wonderful World performed by lead actor Dwayne Johnson and produced by film composer/orchestrator William Ross. The soundtrack is scheduled to be released on February 7, 2012. Audio clips can be checked out after the jump. ‘Underworld Awakening’ Score Album Details

Lakeshore Records has revealed the details of the score release for the action horror sequel Underworld Awakening. The album features the original score from the movie by Paul Haslinger who previously scored the original film in the series, as well as the 2009 prequel Rise of the Lycans. Also included are three tracks by Blue Stahli, Aesthetic Perfection and Angelspit. The soundtrack will be released digitally on January 24, 2012 and the CD will be out on February 14. Alexandre Desplat to Score Jacques Audiard’s ‘Rust and Bone’

Alexandre Desplat has revealed in a recent interview with Collider that he will be reuniting with French director Jacques Audiard this year. They have previously worked together on all of the director’s features including the crime drama A Prophet, which was nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Foreign Language Film category two years ago. The director’s newest film is the drama Rust and Bone based on a short-story collection by Craig Davidson of the same title. The movie stars Marion Cotillard as a killer whale trainer who suffers a terrible accident during one evening’s performance and is left handicapped. Matthias Schoenarts, Celine Sallette and Bouli Lanners are co-starring. Audiard co-wrote the film’s screenplay with his writing partner on A Prophet, Thomas Bidegain and is also producing the film with Martine Cassinelli and Pascal Caucheteux. Sony Masterworks will be releasing the soundtrack album for the WWII drama Red Tails. The album includes the original score from the movie composed by Terence Blanchard (Inside Man, The 25th Hour). Theodore Shapiro to Score ‘Dog Fight’

Theodore Shapiro is set to reteam with director Jay Roach on the upcoming comedy Dog Fight. The movie stars Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis as two rival politicians running for a congressional seat in a small North Carolina district election. Jason Sudekis, Brian Cox, Dylan McDermott, Sarah Baker, Katherine LaNasa, Dan Akroyd and John Lithgow are co-starring. The film’s script is written by Chris Henchy (The Other Guys) and Shawn Harwell (Eastbound & Down). Ferrell is producing the project with Adam McKay through Gary Sanchez Productions and Roach and Galifianikis are also producing. Roach has previously collaborated with Shapiro on the 2010 comedy Dinner for Schmucks starring Steve Carell and Paul Rudd, as well as the upcoming HBO drama Game Change starring Julianne Moore, Ed Harris and Woody Harrelson. Michael Kamen’s ‘Road House’ and ‘Renegades’ Soundtracks Released

Intrada Records has announced the release of two scores from the 80s composed by late composer Michael Kamen (Die Hard, Lethal Weapon). First up is the world premiere of the composer’s score for the 1989 action film Road House. 2012 Academy Awards Original Score Predictions

On December 22, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced the movies eligible in the Best Original Score category for the 84th Academy Award. Among the 97 scores on the list, we think about a quarter of the titles have a realistic chance of getting one of the five nominations. Among those scores, there are ten titles that we consider to have frontrunner status (including two scores that should get nominated for sure). The other scores listed seem more like long shots, but past years have shown that surprise nominations are possible.
The Locks:
Ludovic Bource who has composed the score for the black-and-white romance The Artist has already won the European Film Award, the Best Use of Music in Film Award by the Boston Film Critics, as well as as the Best Score Award by the Washington DC Film Critics. Bource also received a Golden Globe and a Broadcast Film Critics Association Award nomination. The fact that the movie doesn’t feature any dialogue makes the music carry a much heavier load than in a most other pictures and the score has been singled out in an unusually large number of film reviews. In addition, the universal acclaim of the film, as well its Oscar chances in other categories (including Best Pictures) makes The Artist our current pick to win the award unless the controversy around the limited use of Bernard Herrmann’s score from Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo in the film keeps growing and ends up impacting some voters. Mike Patton has been tapped to write the music for the upcoming crime drama The Place Beyond the Pines. The movie is directed by Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine) and stars Ryan Gosling as a motorcycle stunt rider who starts robbing banks to support his newborn son until he crosses paths with a determined young cop-turned politicisn, played by Bradley Cooper. Rose Byrne, Eva Mendes, Ben Mendelsohn, Ray Liotta, Dane DeHaan and Emory Cohen are co-starring. Sidney Kimmel (The Lincoln Lawyer, Lars and the Real Girl) is producing the drama with Alex Orlovsky, Lynette Howell and Jamie Patricof (Blue Valentine, Half Nelson). Patton who is best known as the lead singer of the metal rock band Faith No More has previously scored two features, The Solitude of Prime Numbers, and most notably Crank: High Voltage starring Jason Statham. Bruno Coulais has recently recorded his score for the period drama Farewell, My Queen (Les adieux à la reine). The movie is directed by Benoit Jacquot (Right Now, A Single Girl) and stars Diane Kruger (National Treasure, Troy) as Marie-Antoinette. Lea Seydoux (Midnight in Paris) and Virginie Ledoyen (The Beach) are co-starring. The film is based on the prize-winning novel of the same name by Chantal Thomas and is set in the early days of the French revolution as people begin to revolt against the court of King Louis the XVI.
