Alexandre Desplat has recently scored the French drama Renoir. The film directed by Gilles Bourdos is set in 1915 when the painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir, at the end of his life, is filled with a new, wholly unexpected energy when a young girl miraculously enters his world. The drama stars Michel Bouquet is the title role, alongside Christa Theret, Vincent Rottiers and Thomas Doret. Bourdos has co-written the screenplay with Jérôme Tonnerre and Michel Spinosa. Desplat has previously collaborated with the director several times, most recently on the 2008 thriller Afterwards (Et Apres). Renoir is set to premiere at the Cannes Festival next week, where it will close this year’s Un Certain Regard section. Read the rest of this entry »

Composer Elliot Goldenthal will be celebrated in concert at the Film Music Festival in Krakow on Saturday, May 26 at the Tinning Plant of ArcelorMittal Poland in Krakow. The concert will be performed by the Polish Orchestra Sinfonietta Cracovia accompanied by Pro Musica Mundi Choir and the boys’ choir Pueri Contores Sancti Nicolai and conducted by composer Diego Navarro. The first part of the concert program – Alien – The Biomechanical Symphony – will be devoted to music from all four Alien films in the sci-fi saga and will feature suites from Goldenthal’s music for Alien 3, as well as from Jerry Goldsmith’s Alien, James Horner’s Aliens and John Frizzell’s Alien: Resurrection scores. The second part of the program – Elliot Goldenthal’s Cinema of Art & Blood – will feature music from some of Goldenthal’s collaborations with director Julie Taymor including Frida (for which the composer received his first Academy Award) and Titus in addition to his music from Neil Jordan’s Interview with a Vampire and Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever. John Paesano has been tapped to score Dreamworks Animation’s upcoming TV series Dragons based on the 2010 hit animated feature How to Train Your Dragon. The show follows the adventures of Hiccup, Toothless, and a community of Viking warriors, as they discover the world of dragons is a lot larger than they thought. It has been reported that the voice cast of the feature film, including Jay Baruchel, America Ferrera, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and T. J. Miller will be returning for the TV version. Composer John Powell has received an Academy Award nomination for his score for the original film. Dragons marks the Dreamworks Animation’s first project for Cartoon Network. The only movie opening wide this weekend is the supernatural comedy Dark Shadows starring Johnny Depp, Chloe Moretz, Michelle Pfeiffer, Bella Heathcoate and Eva Green. The film marks the fourteenth collaboration between the director and composer Danny Elfman. WaterTower Music has released two soundtrack albums, including the original score by the composer. Mark Isham has been hired to score the pilot for the ABC drama Beauty and the Beast. The reimagining of the classic fairy tale stars Darius Campbell, F. Murray Abraham, Ruth Bradley, Chris Egan, Karen LeBlanc and Meegan Warner. The show written and executive produced by Jon Steinberg (Jericho, Human Target) is set in a dangerous world where a beautiful and tough princess discovers an unlikely connection with a mysterious beast. Yves Simoneau (V, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee) has directed the pilot of the ABC Studios production. Also executive producing is Gary Fleder (Runaway Jury) through his Mojo Films production company. Isham has previously collaborated with Fleder on several movies, including the thrillers Kiss the Girls and Don’t Say a World. The full details of the soundtrack release for Ridley Scott’s highly anticipated sci-fi horror film Prometheus have been revealed. The album features the film’s original music composed by Marc Streitenfeld (Robin Hood, American Gangster), as well as two tracks from the additional music written by Harry Gregson-Williams. The soundtrack will be released on June 12, 2012 by Sony Masterworks and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Audio clips will be added to this article within the next few weeks. Prometheus stars Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green and Ben Foster. The details of the soundtrack release for Jacques Audiard’s drama Rust & Bone (De rouille et d’os) have been revealed. The album features 18 tracks from the film’s original score composed by Alexandre Desplat. Also included are various songs from the movie by Bon Iver, Azari, John Cooper Clarke, The B-52’s, Lykke Li, Carte Blanche and Colin Stetson. The soundtrack will be released in France both digitally and physically on May 14, 2012. Audio clips can be checked out here and the album is available to order as an import on Amazon. No domestic release for the soundtrack has been announced yet. Rust & Bone stars Marion Cottilard a killer whale trainer who suffers a terrible accident during one evening’s performance and is left handicapped. Matthias Schoenarts, Celine Sallette and Bouli Lanners are co-starring. The French drama is set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next week.

David Lawrence is the composer of the new USA series Common Law. The show starring Michael Ealy, Warren Kole, Jack McGee and Sonya Walger centers on two cops who are forced into couples’ therapy by their Captain to revive their flagging professional relationship. The drama is is executive produced and written by Cormac Wibberley and Marianne Wibberley (National Treasure, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle). Jon Turteltaub (National Treasure, Phenomenon) has directed the pilot and is also executive producing with Craig Sweeny (Medium, The 4400) through his Junction Entertainment production company. The album features one track from the film’s original score composed by Rob Simonsen and Jonathan Sadoff, as well as numerous songs by artists including The Beach Boys, INXS, French Kicks, Frank Black, PM Down, The Walker Brothers, The Hollies, Wang Chung, Scissor Sisters and Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass.
