thomas-newmanThomas Newman will be honored with the Frederick Loewe Award for Film Composing at the 25th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF). The composer will be receiving his award for his music for John Lee Hancock’s Saving Mr. Banks starring Emma Thompson, Tom Hanks and Colin Farrell. Newman has previously won the award in 2006 following his work for Cinderella Man and Jarhead. Past recipients of the Frederick Loewe Award include Mychael Danna, Alexandre Desplat, Danny Elfman, Howard Shore and Randy Newman. The Awards Gala will be held Saturday, January 4, 2014 at the Palm Springs Convention Center. Newman will be recognized at the event alongside Sandra Bullock, Bruce Dern, Matthew McConaughey, Steve McQueen, Julia Roberts and Lupita Nyong’o.

star-trek-nemesisVarese Sarabande has announced the latest titles in the CD Club series. Among the titles is a deluxe edition for Star Trek: Nemesis, the tenth feature in the series and the final movie with the Next Generation crew, directed by Stuart Baird and starring Jonathan Frakes, Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner, Tom Hardy and Marina Sirtis. The album includes the world premiere release of the complete score composed and conducted by Jerry Goldsmith (The Omen, Planet of the Apes, Patton) who previously scored Star Trek: The Motion PictureThe Final Frontier, First Contact and Insurrection. Nemesis marked his final score for the franchise. The soundtrack also features source music and alternate cues. A couple of major local critics associations have been announced their winners for this year’s movies. The Coen Brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis was honored by three organizations for its soundtrack produced by T Bone Burnett. As a side note, the film doesn’t feature an actual score and only one original song, which is why the LA Film Critics’ choice in the Best Music Score category is somewhat misleading.  For a full list of winners, click on each group’s name below.

bonnie-and-clydePremiering tonight on the History, Lifetime and A&E networks is the mini-series Bonnie & Clyde directed by Bruce Beresford (Driving Miss Daisy) and starring Emile Hirsch, Holliday Grainger, Holly Hunter, William Hurt, Sarah Hyland, Elizabeth Reaser, Lane Garrison, Austin Hebert and Dale Dickey. The music of the two-parter is composed by John Debney (The Passion of the Christ, Elf, Hatfield & McCoys). The album features the songs from the film by artists including Billy Joel, Bo Diddley, Elmore James, Eartha Kitt, Howlin’ Wolf, The Lemonheads, Cannonball Adderley, Joe Cuba, Ahmad Jamal, Romeo Void and more. The soundtrack will be released digitally on December 17, 2013 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. The Wolf of Wall Street is written by Terence Winter (Boardwalk Empire) and stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Margot Robbie, Matthew McConaughey, Jon Favreau, Kyle Chandler, Rob Reiner, Jean Dujardin, Pj Byrne and Kenneth Choi. The movie tells the  true story of Jordan Belfort, from his rise to a wealthy stockbroker living the high life to his fall involving crime, corruption and the federal government. david-hirschfelderDavid Hirschfelder has composed the music for the upcoming Australian drama Healing. The film is directed by Craig Monahan and stars Hugo Weaving, Xavier Samuel, Don Hany, Xavier Samuel, Jane Menelaus, Anthony Hayes, Mark Leonard Winter, Robert Taylor and Justine Clarke. The movie tells the story of a real-life prison inmate’s last 18 months before release after serving a 16-year term as he is sent to a low-security, pre-release prison farm, where a senior officer has established a unique program to rehabilitate broken men. Monahan has co-written the screenplay with Alison Niselle and is also co-producing the project with Tait Brady (The 25th Reich). Hirschfelder has previously scored Monahan’s two last features The Interview and Peaches, both of which also starred Weaving in the leading role. Read the rest of this entry »

out-of-the-furnaceThe only movie to open wide this weekend is the drama Out of the Furnace co-written and directed by Scott Cooper and starring Christian Bale, Woody Harrelson, Casey Affleck, Forest Whitaker, Willem Dafoe, Zoe Saldana and Sam Shepard. The film’s original score is composed by Dickon Hinchliffe (Winter’s Tale, Last Chance Harvey). Relativity Music Group has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score earlier this week. Check out our previous news article for the full album details. inside-llewyn-davisOpening in limited release is the drama Inside Llewyn Davis directed by Joel and Ethan Coen and starring Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, John Goodman, Garrett Hedlund and Justin Timberlake. Nonesuch Records has released a soundtrack album produced by T Bone Burnett and the Coen Brothers, which features 12 new recordings made for the film performed by the movie’s cast, an existing recording by Dave Van Ronk, as well as a previously unreleased version of the song Farewell by Bob Dylan. martin-leonMartin Léon is reuniting with director Philippe Falardeau on the upcoming indie drama The Good Lie. The movie marks the filmmaker’s first English language project and stars Reese Witherspoon, Corey Stoll, Sarah Baker and Brit Arnold Oceng. The film follows a young refugee of the Sudanese Civil War who wins a lottery for relocation to the United States with three other lost boys and develops an unlikely friendship with a brash American woman assigned to help them. Margaret Nagle (Warm Springs, Boardwalk Empire) has written the screenplay. Molly Smith (Beautiful Creatures, P.S. I Love You), Trent Luckinbill and Thad Luckinbill are producing the project for Black Label Media, alongside Brian Grazer & Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind, Apollo 13, 24) and Karen Kehela Sherwood (Blue Crush) for Imagine Entertainment. yves-saint-laurentWY Productions will release a soundtrack album for the biographical drama Yves Saint Laurent. The album features the film’s original music composed by Ibrahim Maalouf. Also included are the songs featured in the film by artists such as Brisa Roché, Chromatics, The Emotions, The Chamber Brothers, We the People, The Bossmen and Patrick Watson. The soundtrack will be released digitally on January 6, 2014 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Audio clips can be checked out after the jump. Yves Saint Laurent is directed by Jalil Lespert and stars Pierre Niney in the title role of the French fashion designer and Guillaume Gallienne as Pierre Berge, his onetime romantic partner and fashion house co-founder. Charlotte Le Bon is also starring in the film. The movie will be released in France on January 8, 2014 and has been picked up by the Weinstein Company for a domestic release later in 2014.
