Two new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:

Expected to top the weekend box office is the disaster movie San Andreas directed by Brad Peyton and starring Dwayne Johnson, Carla Gugino, Alexandra Daddario, Ioan Gruffudd, Archie Panjabi, Hugo Johnstone-Burt, Art Parkinson and Paul Giamatti. The film’s original music is composed by Andrew Lockington (Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters) who previously scored Peyton’s Journey to the Center of the Earth and Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. WaterTower Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music, as well as a cover version of California Dreamin’ performed by Sia. Also opening wide is the romantic comedy Aloha directed by Cameron Crowe and starring Bradley Cooper, Rachel McAdams, Emma Stone, Bill Murray, John Krasinski, Danny McBride and Alec Baldwin. Jónsi & Alex have composed the film’s original score. Sony Legacy and Madison Gate Records have released a soundtrack album featuring two tracks by the composers, as well as songs by artists such as Beck, David Crosby, Fleetwood Mac, The Blue Nile, Kurt Vile, Josh Ritter & more. Elliot Goldenthal Presented with Kilar Award at Krakow Film Music Festival

Last night, Elliot Goldenthal was presented with the first ever Wojciech Kilar Award during the sold out Polish Music Gala: Scoring4Wajda concert in the ICE Krakow Congress Center at the Krakow Film Music Festival in Krakow, Poland. The Academy Award-winning composer’s longtime companion and entertainer, director Julie Taymor (Frida, Titus, Across the Universe, A Midsummer Night’s Dream) was also in attendance a the event. The Wojciech Kilar Award aims to raise the profile of the late Polish pianist/composer who is known for such scores as The Pianist and Bram Stoker’s Dracula and honors composers whose film work has a vigorous life beyond the screen. Johnny Klimek & Tom Tykwer Scoring ‘A Hologram for the King’ and Netflix’s ‘Sense8’

Johnny Klimek and Tom Tykwer are composing the score for the upcoming comedy drama A Hologram for the King. The film is directed by Tykwer (Run Lola Run, The International) and stars Tom Hanks, Sarita Choudhury, Omar Elba, Tracey Fairaway, David Menkin and Tom Skerritt. The movie is based on the novel by Dave Eggers takes place in an up-and-coming Saudi Arabian city that provides the backdrop for a foundering American businessman’s last-ditch effort to stave off bankruptcy, pay his daughters college fees, and finally accomplish something big. Mario Grigorov to Score David Yates’ ‘Tarzan’

Mario Grigorov has signed on to score the upcoming action adventure Tarzan. The film is directed by David Yates (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) and stars Alexander Skarsgård in the title role, alongside Samuel L. Jackson, Margot Robbie, Djimon Hounsou, John Hurt and Christoph Waltz. The movie based on the classic story and characters created by Edgar Rice Burroughs takes place years after Tarzan left the jungles of Africa behind for a gentrified life as John Clayton III, Lord Greystoke and is invited back to the Congo to serve as a trade emissary of Parliament, unaware that he is a pawn in a deadly convergence of greed and revenge. ‘Inside Out’ Soundtrack Details

The full details of the soundtrack album for Pixar Animation’s Inside Out have been revealed. The album features the film’s original music composed by Academy Award winner Michael Giacchino (Lost, Star Trek, Tomorrowland, Jurassic World) who previously scored the studios’ features The Incredibles, Up, Ratatouille and Cars 2. The soundtrack will be released on June 16, 2015 by Walt Disney Records and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Inside Out is directed by Pete Docter (Up, Monsters, Inc.) and features the voice talent of Amy Poehler, Bill Hader, Mindy Kaling, Lewis Black and Phyllis Smith. Read the rest of this entry »

David Lawrence Scoring Disney Channel’s ‘Descendants’

David Lawrence has composed the original score for the upcoming Disney Channel original movie Descendants. The film is directed by Kenny Ortega (This Is It) and follows the benevolent teenaged son of the King and Queen (Beast and Belle from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast) who is poised to take the throne and offer a chance at redemption to the trouble-making offspring of Cruella De Vil, Maleficent, the Evil Queen and Jafar who have been imprisoned on a forbidden island with all the other villains. Howard Shore to Score Disney’s ‘Pete’s Dragon’

Howard Shore is set to score Disney’s upcoming remake of Pete’s Dragon. The film is directed by David Lowery (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints) and stars Bryce Dallas Howard, Oakes Fegley, Wes Bentley, Karl Urban, Oona Laurence and Robert Redford. The movie is based on the 1977 classic and tells the story of the special bond between an orphaned boy, Pete, and his best friend, Elliott, who just happens to be a dragon. Lowery also co-wrote the screenplay with Toby Halbrooks. Jim Whitaker (The Odd Life of Timothy Green, The Finest Hours) is producing the project and Barrie Osborne (The Lord of the Rings, Face/Off) serves as an executive producer. Dustin O’Halloran’s ‘Transparent’ Theme Released

(Updated on June 2, 2015): Amazon Content Services has released the main titles theme for the Golden Globe-winning Amazon Studios original series Transparent. The theme is composed by Dustin O’Halloran (Like Crazy, Breathe In, Now Is Good). The release features the composer’s theme as featured in the show’s main titles sequence, as well as a longer solo piano version. Visit Amazon to download the EP featuring the two tracks. A full soundtrack album featuring songs from the first season of the comedy drama, as well as two tracks from O’Halloran’s score has been released earlier last December. Transparent created by Jill Soloway and starring Gaby Hoffmann, Jay Duplass, Amy Landecker, Judith Light and Jeffrey Tambor is now available to stream on Amazon and a second season will premiere later this year.

Craig Wedren to Return for Netflix’s ‘Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp’

Craig Wedren is scoring the upcoming Netflix original series Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp. The show is directed by David Wain is a prequel to the original film and tells the story of the first day of Camp Firewood’s famous summer season. Elizabeth Banks, Bradley Cooper, Michael Ian Black, Judah Friedlander, Janeane Garofalo, Christopher Meloni, Joe Lo Truglio, Ken Marino, Marguerite Moreau, Zak Orth, Amy Poehler, David Hyde Pierce, Paul Rudd, Molly Shannon, and Michael Showalter are reprising their roles from the 2001 film. Danny Bensi & Saunder Jurriaans Scoring Joel Edgerton’s ‘The Gift’

Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans have been tapped to score the upcoming thriller The Gift. The film marks the directorial debut of actor Joel Edgerton who also stars in the movie alongside Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall The movie follows a couple who seek to reinvigorate their relationship with a fresh beginning in a new town, only to be have their life disrupted by an acquaintance from the husband’s past. Edgerton also wrote the screenplay. Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity, Insidious, The Purge) is producing the film through his Blumhouse production company with Rebecca Yeldman (The Kite Runner, On the Run). Read the rest of this entry »
