The World Soundtrack Academy has announced the first wave of nominees for the 2017 World Soundtrack Awards in the categories Film Composer of the Year, Best TV Composer and Best Original Song Written Directly for a Film. The winners will be announced at the World Soundtrack Awards & concert on Wednesday, October 18 at the Ghent International Film Festival. Here are the nominations:

Kreng (aka Pepijn Caudron) is composing the original music for actress Karen Gillan’s directorial debut, The Party’s Just Beginning. Gillan also stars in the movie alongside Lee Pace, Matthew Beard, Paul Higgins, Siobhan Redmond and Kate Dickie. The movie centers on a woman who is dealing with the suicide of her best friend. Gillan also wrote the screenplay. Mali Elfman (Before I Wake), Tien Huei Grace Yeh and Claire Mundell (Not Another Happy Ending) are producing the project. Read the rest of this entry »
Lakeshore Records has announced a soundtrack album for the documentary Look & See: A Portrait of Wendell Berry. The album features the film’s original music composed by Kerry Muzzey. The soundtrack will be released digitally on September 1, 2017 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Look & See: A Portrait of Wendell Berry is directed by Laura Dunn & Jeff Sewell and looks at the decline of modern U.S. agrarian culture highlighted through the writings and reflections of author Wendell Berry, who embedded himself in rural life upon returning home to Kentucky in 1965. This past weekend, Marco Beltrami has recorded his score for the upcoming thriller The Snowman. The film is directed by Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) and stars Michael Fassbender, Rebecca Ferguson, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Val Kilmer and J.K. Simmons. The movie is based on Jo Nesbø’s global bestseller and follows an elite crime squad’s lead detective who investigates the disappearance of a victim on the first snow of winter and fears an elusive serial killer may be active again. Because Music will release a soundtrack album for the French drama 120 Beats Per Minute (120 battements par minute) aka BPM (Beats Per Minute). The album features the film’s original music composed by Arnaud Rebotini. The soundtrack will be released overseas on August 23, 2017 and physically later this year. Sony Masterworks will release a soundtrack album for Simon Curtis’ biographical drama Goodbye Christopher Robin starring Domhnall Gleeson, Margot Robbie, Will Tilston, Kelly Macdonald, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Alex Lawther. The album features the film’s original music composed by Academy Award nominee Carter Burwell (Carol, Fargo, Twilight, In Bruges). The soundtrack will be released on October 13, 2017 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon The movie, which focuses on the relationship between Winnie the Poohcreator A.A. Premiering on Friday, August 25, is the Amazon original series The Tick created by Ben Edlund based on his own comic book series and starring Peter Serafinowicz, Griffin Newman, Jackie Earle Haley, Valorie Curry, Yara Martinez and Brendan Hine. Michael Giacchino (Star Trek, Lost, Jurassic World, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) who previously scored Pixar’s Up, Inside Out, The Incredibles, Ratatouille & Cars 2 is composing the film’s original score. Kristen Anderson-Lopez & Robert Lopez are contributing the original song Remember Me and Germaine Franco & the film’s co-director Adrian Molina have also written additional songs for the film. The soundtrack will be released digitally on August 25, 2017 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon, where you can also check out audio samples. Gook is written and directed by Chon who also stars in the movie alongside Simone Baker, David So, Curtiss Cook Jr., Sang Chon, Omono Okojie, Ben Munoz, Cesar Garcia, Isaiah Jarel and Kirlew Vilbon. The movie follows two Korean American brothers who strike up a friendship with an 11-year-old African American girl while racial tensions build to a breaking point as the 1992 Los Angeles riots break out. Hans Zimmer & Lorne Balfe are hosting a competition for the music community entitled, “Show us your Musical Genius!” Participants will submit their rendition or interpretation of the composers’ Emmy Award-nominated theme from the NatGeo original series Genius executive produced by Ron Howard, Brian Grazer & Ken Biller and starring Geoffrey Rush & Johnny Flynn and blue ribbon judges along with Zimmer and Balfe will pick the winners.
