Justin Hurwitz has won the Grammy Award for his music for Damien Chazelle’s La La Land in the Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media category. The other nominated composers in the category included Hans Zimmer (Dunkirk), Johann Johannsson (Arrival), Ramin Djawadi (Game of Thrones: Season 7) and Benjamin Wallfisch, Pharrell Williams & Zimmer (Hidden Figures). In the Best Song Written For Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media, Lin-Manuel Miranda won the award for the song How Far I’ll Go from Disney’s animated feature Moana. John Morris has passed away this past Thursday, January 25, at age 91 at his home in Red Hook, New York. The composer is best known for collaborations on numerous films directed by Mel Brooks, including Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, Spaceballs, The Producers, Life Stinks and Silent Movie. He received two Academy Award nominations for the original title song from Blazing Saddles in 1976 and for his score to David Lynch’s 1980 feature The Elephant Man, for which he was also Grammy Award-nominated. Morris’ other film scoring credits include Arthur Hiller’s 1979 comedy The In-Laws, 1983’s Yellowbeard, 1984’s The Woman in Red starring Gene Wilder, 1985’s Clue, the 1987 classic Dirty Dancing starring Patrick Swayze and 1990’s Stella starring Bette Midler. Premiering in the U.S. on Tuesday, January 30, is the German television series Babylon Berlin co-created and -directed by Tom Tykwer and starring Volker Bruch, Liv Lisa Fries, Matthias Brandt, Hannah Herzsprung, Karl Markovics, Lars Eidinger and Sebastian Urzen. Tykwer also co-scored the show with Johnny Klimek (Run Lola Run, The International, Cloud Atlas, Sense8). BMG has released a soundtrack album featuring the score, as well as tracks by The Bryan Ferry Orchestra, Moka Efti Orchestra & more last fall when the drama premiered overseas. Premiering on Wednesday, January 31, is the YouTube Red original series Step Up: High Water created by Holly Sorensen and starring Ne-Yo, Naya Rivera, Lauryn McClain, Petrice Jones, Faizon Love and Marcus Mitchell. Lionsgate Records will release a soundtrack album featuring the original songs from the show by Jason “Poo Bear” Boyd and “Jingle” Jared Gutstadt on the same day. Chris Alan Lee Scoring Paramount Network’s ‘Heathers’ TV Series

Chris Alan Lee is scoring the upcoming Paramount Network comedy Heathers. The show is developed by Jason Micallef (Butter) based on the 1988 cult classic film of the same name (scored by David Newman) and stars Grace Victoria Cox, James Scully, Melanie Field, Brendan Scannell and Jasmine Mathews. The series is set in the present day and revolves around Veronica Sawyer as she deals with a very different but equally vicious group of Heathers. Micallef is also executive producing the Sony Pictures Television production with Lakeshore Entertainment’s Tom Rosenberg & Gary Lucchesi (Underworld, The Lincoln Lawyer, Crank), as well as Josh McGuire and Trevor Engelson (Remember Me, Snowfall). The only new movie opening nationwide this weekend is the action adventure Maze Runner: The Death Cure directed by Wes Ball and starring Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Ki Hong Lee, Giancarlo Esposito, Aidan Gillen, Barry Pepper, Will Poulter and Patricia Clarkson. The film’s original music is composed by John Paesano (Daredevil, The Defenders, When the Game Stands Tall, My All American) who also scored the first two installments in the series. Opening in limited release is the comedy drama Please Stand By directed by Ben Lewin and starring Dakota Fanning, Toni Collette, Alice Eve and Patton Oswalt. Heitor Pereira (Despicable Me, Minions, The Smurfs, If I Stay, Beverly Hills Chihuahua) has composed the film’s original music. No word on a soundtrack release. The movie follows a young autistic woman who runs away from her caregiver in order to boldly go and deliver her 500-page Star Trek script to a writing competition in Hollywood. Steven Price has recently recorded his score for the upcoming Disneynature documentary Dolphins. The film is directed by Alastair Fothergill (Planet Earth, Chimpanzee, African Cats) & Keith Scholey (Bears, African Cats) and tells the story of Echo, a young dolphin who’s having trouble deciding between growing up and having fun. Scholey is also producing the project with Jane Hamlin. Price (Gravity, Suicide Squad, Fury, Baby Driver) has previously scored the Fothergill-produced BBC Earth natural history docu-series The Hunt. ‘American Folk’ Score Album Released

Lakeshore Records has released a score album for the indie drama American Folk. The album features the film’s original music composed by Ben Lovett (The Signal, The Ritual, Synchronicity, Black Rock). The soundtrack is now available to download on Amazon, where you can also listen to audio samples. A separate soundtrack featuring the songs from the movie by lead actors Joe Purdy & Amber Rubarth is also being released today. American Folk is written and directed by David Heinz and stars Purdy, Rubarth, Krisha Fairchild and David Fine. The album features the film’s original music composed by Ben Lovett (The Signal, Black Rock, Don Peyote, Synchronicity). The soundtrack will be released digitally on February 9, 2018 and i now available for pre-order on Amazon. The Ritual is directed by David Bruckner and stars Rafe Spall, Arsher Ali, Robert James-Collier and Sam Troughton. The movie follows four men who are subjected to a night of terror when they unwisely take refuge in a derelict house as they venture into the wilderness of the Swedish highlands to perform a remembrance for a dearly departed friend.
