Four new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the gothic fantasy movie The House with a Clock in Its Walls directed by Eli Roth and starring Jack Black, Cate Blanchett, Owen Vaccaro, Kyle MacLachlan, Collen Camp, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Vanessa Anne Williams and Sunny Suljic. The film’s original music is composed by Nathan Barr (True Blood, The Americans, Hostel, Cabin Fever). Back Lot Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. Also opening wide is the drama Life Itself written and directed by Dan Fogelman and starring Oscar Isaac, Olivia Wilde, Mandy Patinkin, Olivia Cooke, Laia Costa, Annette Bening and Antonio Banderas. Federico Jusid (The Secret in Their Eyes, Kidnap, Misconduct, The Hunter’s Prayer) has composed the film’s original score. No soundtrack album has been announced. Also opening nationwide is the thriller Assassination Nation directed by Sam Levinson and starring Odessa Young, Suki Waterhouse, Bella Thorne, Abra, Hari Nef, Bill Skarsgard, Joel McHale and Maude Apatow. The film’s original music is composed by Ian Hultquist (A-X-L, Animals, My Blind Brother, The Gospel According to André). Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as an original track by Isabella ‘Machine’ Summers and a song by Abra. Also opening wide this weekend is the documentary Fahrenheit 11/9 directed by Michael Moore. The movie, which is being described as a “provocative and comedic look at the times in which we live” features numerous existing music tracks (including a cue from Jerry Goldsmith’s The Omen score), as well as additional original music by Jesse Voccia (Bosch, A Haunted House 2) and Jeff Gibbs who previously contributed score to several of Moore’s films, including Fahrenheit 9/11 and Bowling for Columbine. Opening in limited release is the comedic western The Sisters Brothers co-written and directed by co-written and directed by Jacques Audiard and starring Joaquin Phoenix, John C. Reilly, Jake Gyllenhaal and Riz Ahmed. The film’s original music is composed by Alexandre Desplat (The Shape of Water, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, The King’s Speech). Why Not Productions has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score digitally overseas last week and Quartet Records will release a physical version next month. Also opening in limited release is the period drama Colette co-written and directed by Wash Westmoreland and starring Keira Knightley, Dominic West, Denise Gough, Fiona Shaw, Robert Pugh and Eleanor Tomlinson. Thomas Adès, best known for composing numerous concert pieces and operas, has made his major film scoring debut on the project. No soundtrack album has been announced yet. Also opening in select theaters is the documentary Love, Gilda directed by Lisa D’Apolito about performer Gilda Radner and her childhood, her comedy career, her relationships and ultimately, her struggles with cancer. The film’s original score is composed by Miriam Cutler (RBG, The Hunting Ground, Dark Money, Ethel). No word on a soundtrack release. Opening in select theaters and on VOD is the romantic comedy Little Italy directed by Donald Petrie and starring Hayden Christensen, Emma Roberts, Alyssa Milano, Adam Ferrara, Gary Basaraba, Linda Kash, Andrew Phung, Christina Rosato, Jayne Seymour and Danny Aiello. Mateo Messina (Juno, Blockers, Superstore, Casual, Butter) has composed the film’s original score. Liz Lokre has contributed the original song Stop Runnin’ to the film (click here to download the track). The comedy is being released by Lionsgate.
Also opening in select cities is the romantic drama The Song of Sway Lake directed by Ari Gold and starring Rory Culkin, Robert Sheehan, Isabelle McNally, Mary Beth Peil, Elizabeth Pena and Jack Falahee. The film’s original music is composed by Ethan Gold. Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score and songs. Another limited release this week is the comedy A Happening of Monumental Proportions directed by Judy Greer and starring Allison Janney, Common, Bradley Whitford, Katie Holmes, Kumail Nanjiani, Storm Reid, Anders Holm, Rob Riggle and John Chu. Alec Puro (The Art of Getting By, Higher Ground, The Fosters, All Nighter, The First Time) has composed the film’s original score. No soundtrack album has been announced. Also opening in limited release is the sci-fi thriller Beyond the Sky co-written and directed by Fulvio Sestito and starring Ryan Carnes, Jordan Hinson, Peter Stormare, Dee Wallace, Martin Sensmeier and Don Stark. The film’s original music is composed by Don Davis (The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions, Jurassic Park 3, Bound). No word yet on a soundtrack release. Opening in select theaters before premiering this coming Monday on HBO is the documentary Jane Fonda in Five Acts directed by Susan Lacy about the life, work, activism and controversies of Academy Award-winning actress and fitness tycoon, Jane Fonda. Paul Cantelon (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, W., Everything Is Illuminated, Conviction) has composed the film’s original music. Opening in select theaters while also premiering on Netflix today is the documentary Quincy directed by Rashida Jones & Alan Hicks and about trumpeter, producer, conductor, composer and arranger Quincy Jones who also composed the original music to the film, including an original song he co-wrote with Mark Ronson. Universal Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the song and several classic tracks by Jones, Ray Charles, The Brothers Johnson & more.
