Opening semi-wide in around 500 theaters is the documentary Cookie Queens directed by Alysa Nahmias and produced by Michael Dweck, Gregory Kershaw and Jennifer Sims. Amanda Jones (Murderbot, The Perfect Find, Somebody Somewhere, Naomi, Good Trouble, Young Love, Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake, Moving On, Super/Natural). No word on a soundtrack release. The movie, which revolves around four tenacious girls who strive to be a top-selling “Cookie Queen,” navigating an $800 million business in which childhood and ambition collide, premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and is being distributed by Roadside Attractions.
Opening in Los Angeles and New York this weekend before expanding nationwide on August 21 is the biographic drama Tony co-written and directed by Matt Johnson and starring Dominic Sessa, Emilia Jones, Leo Woodall, Antonio Banderas, Dagmara Dominczyk, Rich Sommers and Stavros Halkias. The film’s original music is composed by Jay McCarrol (Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie, Blackberry, Hell of a Summer, The Kid Detective,Operation Avalanche). Opening in New York this weekend before expanding to more markets in the coming weeks is the drama Late Fame directed by Kent Jones and starring Willem Dafoe, Greta Lee, Edmund Donovan, Jake Lacy, Tony Torn, Clark Johnson, Clay Singer, Graham Campbell and Arthur Langlie. The film’s original music is composed by Don Fleming. No word yet on a soundtrack release. The movie, which follows a forgotten New York poet who works in a post office, when a flattering fan appears on his doorsteps and anoints him as a rediscovered genius, premiered at last year’s Venice Film Festival and is being distributed by Magnolia Pictures.
Also opening in select theaters this weekend is the coming-of-age drama Olmo co-written and directed by Fernando Eimbcke and starring Aivan Uttapa, Gustavo Sánchez Parra, Diego Olmedo, Rosa Armendariz and Andrea Suárez Paz. Giosuè Greco (Didi, Death of a Unicorn, Welcome to Wrexham, Let the Right One In, Nai Nai & Wài Pó) has composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been released. The movie, which revolves around a fourteen-year-old boy and his family as they are struggling to make ends meet in 1979 New Mexico, premiered at last year’s Berlin Film Festival and is being released by Greenwich Entertainment.
