Mark Ronson & Andrew Wyatt (A Star Is Born) have taken over scoring duties on upcoming fantasy comedy Barbie. The film is directed by Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird, Little Women) and stars Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, Will Ferrell, Michael Cera, Ariana Greenblatt, Ana Cruz Kayne, Emma Mackey, Hari Nef, Alexandra Shipp, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Simu Liu, Ritu Arya, Dua Lipa (who also provides an original song to the movie) and Helen Mirren. Gerwig also co-wrote the screenplay with Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story, The Squid and the Whale) based on Barbie by Mattel.

Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’ to Feature Original Song by Dua Lipa
Dua Lipa has recorded an original song for Greta Gerwig’s fantasy comedy Barbie. The track, entitled Dance the Night, will be released as a digital single this coming Friday, May 26. Dua Lipa announced the song title on social media. No songwriter/producer credits have been revealed yet, but we have learned a couple of weeks ago that Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt (who both previously collaborated with Dua Lipa) are involved in producing music for the film’s soundtrack. Atlantic Records will release Barbie The Album featuring the songs from the movie, while WaterTower Music is expected to release a separate soundtrack featuring the film’s original score.

Mark Ronson’s Songs from ‘Spies in Disguise’ to Be Released
RCA Records will release a soundtrack EP for Blue Sky Studios’ animated feature Spies in Disguise. The 6-track EP features the songs from the movie, including the two original songs submitted for Academy Awards consideration, Freak of Nature written by Mark Ronson, Tommy Brenneck, Ilsey Juber & Alana Chenevert and performed by Ronson & Dodgr, as well as Then There Were Two performed by Ronson & Anderson .Paak who also co-wrote the track with Brenneck. Also included are tracks performed by Lucky Dave, Lil Jon, DJ Shadow and Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock. The soundtrack will be released digitally on December 13 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon.
Ludwig Goransson Wins Academy Award for ‘Black Panther’
Ludwig Goransson was honored with his first Academy Award for his score for Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther at tonight’s 91st Oscar ceremony. Check out his acceptance speech after the jump. The other nominated composers in the Best Original Score category were Terence Blanchard (BlacKkKlansman), Nicholas Britell (If Beale Street Could Talk), Alexandre Desplat (Isle of Dogs) and Marc Shaiman (Mary Poppins Returns).
Justin Hurwitz Wins Critics’ Choice Award for ‘First Man’
Justin Hurwitz was honored with the Critics’ Choice Movie Award in the Best Score category for his music for Damien Chazelle’s First Man at tonight’s 24th Annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards ceremony in Santa Monica, CA. He previously received a Critics’ Choice Award for his score for Chazelle’s La La Land in 2017. The other composers nominated in the Best Score category were Kris Bowers for Green Book, Nicholas Britell for If Beale Street Could Talk, Alexandre Desplat for Isle of Dogs, Ludwig Goransson for Black Panther and Marc Shaiman for Mary Poppins Returns.
Justin Hurwitz Wins Golden Globe for ‘First Man’
Justin Hurwitz has received his third Golden Globe Award in the Original Score category for Damien Chazelle’s First Man. He previously won two Golden Globes for both score and song for Chazelle’s La La Land. The other composers nominated in the Best Original Score category were Marc Shaiman (Mary Poppins Returns), Ludwig Goransson (Black Panther), Alexandre Desplat (Isle of Dogs) and Marco Beltrami (A Quiet Place). ‘Quincy: A Life Beyond Measure’ Soundtrack Details
Universal Music will release the official soundtrack album for the Netflix original documentary Quincy. The album features the original song Keep Reachin’ by Quincy Jones & Mark Ronson feat. Chaka Khan. Also included are several classic tracks by Jones, as well as songs by Ray Charles, The Brothers Johnson and Lesley Gore. The soundtrack will be released digitally tomorrow, September 21 and will be available to download on Amazon, where you can also check out audio samples. Quincy is directed by Rashida Jones & Alan Hicks and profiles the trumpeter, producer, conductor, composer and arranger, offering unprecedented access to his private life and stories from his unparalleled career.
Mark Ronson to Write Original Songs for ‘Songs of the Damned’
Deadline is reporting that Mark Ronson is composing original songs for the upcoming movie musical Songs of the Damned. The film marks the feature directorial debut of Adam Hashemi and follows a group of inmates who stage a musical as a way to escape from prison. Jason Mitchell is in talks to stars to star in the Anonymous Content production, which will be produced by Steve Golin (Spotlight, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), Tariq Merhab, Charlie Scully and Felipe Marino (The Wackness, All the Boys Love Mandy Lane).
Weekly Film Music Roundup (January 23, 2015)
Three new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the animated feature Strange Magic directed by Gary Rydstrom, produced by George Lucas and featuring the voices of Alan Cumming, Evan Rachel Wood, Kristin Chenoweth, Maya Rudolph, Sam Palladio, Meredith Anne Bull, Alfred Molina, Elijah Kelley, Bob Einstein and Peter Stormare. Marius de Vries (Moulin Rouge, Kick-Ass) serves as the film’s musical director and has also composed the original score. Hollywood Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the film performed by the voice cast. Also opening wide is the thriller The Boy Next Door directed by Rob Cohen, produced by Jason Blum and starring Jennifer Lopez, Ryan Guzman, John Corbett and Kristin Chenoweth. The film’s original music is composed by Randy Edelman who previously scored such films as Dragonheart, xXx and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor for Cohen and Nathan Barr (True Blood, The Americans).
