This afternoon, the Society of Composers & Lyricists (SCL) hosted its annual reception honoring the Academy Award-nominated composers and songwriters in the Best Original Score and Best Original Song category at the home of composer John Cacavas in Beverly Hills. All five nominated composers in the score category attended the event: John Williams (Lincoln), Dario Marianelli (Anna Karenina), Alexandre Desplat (Argo), Mychael Danna (Life of Pi) and Thomas Newman (Skyfall). Among the attendants in the Best Original Song category were J. Ralph (nominated for the song Before My Time from Chasing Ice), Claude-Michel Schonberg, Herbert Kretzmer & Alain Boublil (nominated for the original song Suddenly from Les Miserables), Mychael Danna and Bombay Jayashri (who received a nomination for Pi’s Lullaby from Life of Pi), Walter Murphy (nominated for the song Everybody Needs a Best Friend from Ted with Seth MacFarlane) and Paul Epworth (nominated for the title song of Skyfall with Adele).

Weekly Film Music Roundup (November 16, 2012)
Guaranteed to top the weekend box office is the final part in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 directed by Bill Condon and starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner. The film’s music is composed by Carter Burwell. Summit Entertainment, Chop Shop Records and Atlantic Records have released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from and inspired by the film by artists including Passion Pit, Ellie Goulding, Green Day and Feist. Opening in limited release is the comedy drama Silver Linings Playbook directed by David O. Russell and starring Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, Julia Stiles, Jacki Weaver and Chris Tucker. Danny Elfman has composed the film’s score. Sony Masterworks has released a soundtrack featuring the songs featured in the film by Stevie Wonder, Alabama Shakes, alt-K, Les Paul & Mary Ford, Rare Earth and Bob Dylan & Johnny Cash, as well as two tracks by Elfman. ‘Chasing Ice’ Soundtrack Announced
Universal Republic and Lava Records will release a soundtrack album for the documentary Chasing Ice. The album features the film’s original music composed by J. Ralph (Lucky Number Slevin, The Cove), including the end credits song Before My Time performed by Scarlett Johansson and violinist Joshua Bell. The soundtrack will be released digitally on November 19, 2012 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Audio clips will be added to this article within the next few weeks. Chasing Ice is directed by Jeff Orlowski and follows acclaimed environmental photographer James Balog who deploys revolutionary time-lapse cameras to capture a multi-year record of the world’s changing glaciers. The movie, which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, opened in New York this past weekend and will expand to other markets within the next couple of weeks.
J. Ralph to Score ‘Arbitrage’
J. Ralph has been hired to score the upcoming indie drama Arbitrage. The film stars Richard Gere, Tim Roth, Susan Sarandon, Laetitia Casta, Brit Marling and Josh Pais. The movie written and directed by Nicholas Jarecki centers on a troubled hedge fund magnate who is forced to turn to an unlikely ally when he makes an error. Nicholas is the brother of director Andrew Jarecki (Capturing the Friedmans, All Good Things) and makes his live action feature directing debut on the project. Laura Bickford (Traffic, Duplicity), Robert Salerno (21 Grams, A Single Man), Kevin Turen (An American Crime) and Justin Nappi are producing. Principal photography on Arbitrage started last month and a release for the film isn’t expected before 2012.
