Kevin Kiner is composing the score for the new CW drama Jane the Virgin. The show is created by Jennie Snyder Urman (Emily Owens MD) based on the Venezuelan telenovela Juana la Virgen and stars Gina Rodriguez, Andrea Navedo, Justin Baldoni, Yael Grobglas, Brett Dier, Ivonne Coll and Jaime Camil. The series follows a hard-working young Latina woman whose family tradition and a vow to save her virginity until her marriage to a detective is shattered when a doctor accidentally artificially inseminates her during a checkup. Snyder Urman is also executive producing the CBS Television Studios and Warner Bros. Television production with Ben Silverman (The Office, Ugly Betty, The Tudors), Gary Pearl, Jorge Granier, as well as Brad Silberling (Casper, Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events) who also directed the pilot episode.

‘The Book of Life’ Soundtrack Details
Sony Masterworks will release a soundtrack album for the animated feature The Book of Life. The album features the film’s original music composed by Gustavo Santaolalla (Brokeback Mountain, Babel, The Motorcycle Diaries), including selections from the composer’s original score, as well as the film’s songs, including cover versions of Radiohead’s Creep, Biz Markie’s Just a Friend, Rod Stewart’s Do Ya Think I’m Sexy and Mumford & Sons’ I Will Wait performed by Diego Luna and GabrieL Iglesias. Also included are original songs by performed by Jesse & Joy and La Santa Cecilia, as well as tracks by Us The Duo and Kinky’s Más. The soundtrack will be released on October 21, 2014 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. The Book of Life is directed by Jorge Gutierrez, produced by Guillermo del Toro and features the voice talent of Channing Tatum, Zoë Saldana, Diego Luna, Ice Cube, Ron Perlman, Christina Applegate, Danny Trejo, Cheech Marin, Kate del Castillo and Eugenio Derbez. The movie follows a young man torn between fulfilling the expectations of his family and following his heart who embarks on an adventure that spans three fantastical worlds where he must face his greatest fears.
Academy to Present ‘Behind the Score: The Art of the Film Composer’
Composers Gustavo Dudamel, Gustavo Santaolalla and John Williams will gather at the Academy for Behind the Score: The Art of the Film Composer on Monday, July 21, at 7:30 p.m. at the Bing Theater in Los Angeles. In a conversation hosted by Tavis Smiley, the trio will discuss significant musical moments in film that have inspired their work as they examine the art and process of creating a film score as well as the director-composer relationship. Dudamel who is the music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic has just made his film scoring debut with The Liberator (Libertador), a biopic about Simón Bolívar. Santaolalla is a two-time Oscar winner for his scores for Brokeback Mountain and Babel.
‘August: Osage County’ Score Album Details
Sony Classical will release a score album for the film adaptation of Tracy Letts’ Pulitzer Prize-winning play August: Osage County. The album features the film’s original score written by Academy Award-winning composer Gustavo Santaolalla (Brokeback Mountain, The Motorcycle Diaries, Babel). The soundtrack will be released digitally on January 3, 2014 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Audio clips can be checked out after the jump. As previously reported, Columbia Records has released a separate soundtrack featuring the songs from the film by Bon Iver, Kings of Leon,Eric Clapton and more, as well as selections from Santaolalla’s and Adam Taylor’s score earlier this month. August: Osage County directed by John Wells and starring Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Chris Cooper, Margo Martindale, Sam Shepard, Juliette Lewis, Julianne Nichols, Ewan McGregor, Benedict Cumberbatch, Abigail Breslin and Dermot Mulroney is now playing in select theaters and will expand nationwide next month.

Five new movies are opening nationwide this week:
Opening in most theaters is the fantasy comedy drama The Secret Life of Walter Mitty directed by Ben Stiller and starring himself, Kristen Wiig, Shirley MacLaine, Adam Scott, Kathryn Hahn and Sean Penn. The film’s original score is composed by Theodore Shapiro (Tropic Thunder, The Devil Wears Prada) and features vocals by Jose Gonzalez. Also opening this week is The Wolf of Wall Street directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Margot Robbie, Matthew McConaughey, Jon Favreau, Kyle Chandler, Rob Reiner, Jon Bernthal and Jean Dujardin. The film doesn’t feature any original score. Theodore Shapiro composed a couple of cues for the infomercials and ads featured in the movie. Virgin Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the film by artists including Billy Joel, Bo Diddley, Elmore James, Eartha Kitt, Howlin’ Wolf, The Lemonheads, Cannonball Adderley and Joe Cuba. Also included are songs by Bon Iver, Kings of Leon, Eric Clapton, John Fullbright, Billy Squier and JD and the Straight Shot, as well as actor Benedict Cumberbatch who performs a song on screen. Gustavo Santaolalla has taken over scoring duties on the upcoming drama August: Osage County. The movie is directed by John Wells (The Company Men) and features and all-star cast including Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Chris Cooper, Margo Martindale, Juliette Lewis, Abigail Breslin, Ewan McGregor, Julianne Nicholson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Dermot Mulroney, Misty Upham and Sam Shepard. The film is based on the Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning play by Tracy Letts (Bug, Killer Joe) and follows the strong-willed women of the Weston family, whose lives have diverged until a family crisis brings them back to the Midwest house they grew up in. Letts has also written the screenplay. Harvey Weinstein and Jean Doumanian (Sweet and Lowdown) are producing the film with George Clooney & Grant Heslov (Argo, Good Night, and Good Luck).

Opening today is the thriller Jack Reacher directed by Christopher McQuarrie and starring Tom Cruise, Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins, Werner Herzog, David Oyelowo and Robert Duvall. The film’s music is composed by Joe Kraemer who previously scored the director’s 2000 film The Way of the Gun. La-La Land Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score digitally earlier this week. The release date for the physical version is set for early January. Also opening today is the comedy drama This is 40 written and directed by Judd Apatow and starring Paul Rudd, Leslie Mann, John Lithgow, Megan Fox, Iris Apatow, Maude Apatow, Melissa McCarthy, Jason Segel, Robert Smigel, Charlyne Yi and Albert Brooks. The film’s original score is composed by Jon Brion (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind). A soundtrack album featuring one score track by the composer, as well as the film’s songs by artists including Norah Jones, Fiona Apple, Graham Parker and Lindsey Buckingham (all produced by Jon Brion), Wilco and Ryan Adams has been released on Capitol Records. Gustavo Santaolalla to Write Music for Guillermo del Toro’s ‘The Day of the Dead’ and ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ Stage Musical
Deadline is reporting that Gustavo Santaolalla and Paul Williams are writing songs for Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming CG-animated film The Day of the Dead. The movie is directed and co-written by Jorge R. Gutierrez (El Tigre) and is being described as a “Romeo and Juliet-style love story set against a the Mexican holiday “Day of the Dead””. Del Toro is producing the Reel FX production with Aaron Berger and Carina Schulze. The project marks del Toro’s first Mexican film production in almost two decades. The Day of the Dead is targeting a release in the fall of 2014. Santaolalla who received two Academy Awards for his work on Brokeback Mountain and Babel is also composing the music for a stage version of Guillermo del Toro’s 2006 hit film Pan’s Labyrinth about a young stepdaughter of a sadistic army officer who finds refuge and terror in a fantasy world in 1944 Fascist Spain.
‘Hell on Wheels’ Soundtrack Details
Entertainment One Music will be releasing a soundtrack album for the AMC hit series Hell on Wheels. The album features the show’s main theme composed by Gustavo Santaolalla (Brokeback Mountain, Babel) who has recently received his first Emmy nomination for his work on the show, as well as selections from the series’ score from the first season composed by Kevin Kiner (CSI: Miami, Star Wars: The Clone Wars). The soundtrack will be released on August 7, 2012 and is now available for pre-order on iTunes, where you can also check out audio clips from all 34 tracks on the release. Hell on Wheels created by Joe and Tony Gayton (Faster) is set in 1865 and centers on a former Confederate soldier, who is determined to exact revenge on the Union soldiers who murdered his wife. The series stars Anson Mount, Common, Dominique McElligott, Colm Meaney, Tom Noonan, Ben Esler, Phil Burke and Eddie Spears.
