The details of the soundtrack album for Walter Salles’ upcoming drama On the Road have been revealed. The album includes the original score from the film written by Academy Award-winning composer Gustavo Santaolalla (Brokeback Mountain, Babel), as well as several songs featured in the movie by Coati Mundi, Ella Fitzgerald, Son House and Slim Gaillard. The soundtrack will be released overseas next month by Universal Music France. (UPDATE October 2012): The soundtrack will be released in the US on November 12, 2012 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. On the Road stars Sam Riley, Garrett Hedlund, Kristen Stewart, Kirsten Dunst, Viggo Mortensen, Steve Buscemi, Amy Adams, Tom Sturridge, Alicia Braga, Danny Morgan and Elisabeth Moss. The film based on the 1957 novel by Jack Kerouac and produced by Francis Ford Coppola will be premiering at the Cannes Film Festival next month and is also opening in France and a couple of other European countries in late May.

Fall 2011 Television Music Roundup (Part 6): Cable
In our sixth and final part of our fall television series, we are taking a look at the major new shows on the cable networks:
One of this fall’s most talked about new shows is American Horror Story created by Ryan Murphy & Brad Falchuk and starring Dylan McDermott, Connie Britton, Jessica Lange, Evan Peters, Taissa Farmiga and Denis O’Hare. The series has recently received two Golden Globe nominations for Best TV Drama and for Lange’s performance. The show’s score is composed by James Levine who has worked on most of Murphy’s projects in the last decade, including Nip/Tuck, Glee and the feature film Running with Scissors. The drama has also been using a lot of pre-existing score music from composers such as Bernard Herrmann and Alan Silvestri. Kevin Kiner Scoring AMC ‘Hell on Wheels’
Kevin Kiner is scoring the AMC western series Hell on Wheels. The show created by Joe and Tony Gayton (Faster) is set in 1865 and centers on a former Confederate soldier, who is determined to exact revenge on the Union soldiers who murdered his wife. The series stars Anson Mount, Common, Dominique McElligott, Colm Meaney, Ben Esler, Philip Burke and Eddie Spears. Kiner is best known for scoring the long running CBS crime drama CSI: Miami, as well as the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars and its feature film version. Hell on Wheels premieres tomorrow, November 6 and its first season of 10 episodes will be airing every Sunday night on AMC.
‘His Mother’s Eyes’ Soundtrack announced
Varese Sarabande Records has announced a soundtrack album for the French drama Les Yeux De Sa Mère (His Mother’s Eyes). The film’s music is written by two time Academy Award-winning composer Gustavo Santaolalla. The soundtrack will be released on March 22, 2011. While a physical CD will be made available in Europe, the album will only be released digitally in the US. His Mother’s Eyes is directed by Thierry Kilfa and stars Catherine Deneuve. The film will be released in France on March 23 and no domestic release date has been set.

Two new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:
The Rite directed by Mikael Hafstrom and starring Anthony Hopkins, Colin O’Donoghue and Alice Braga features music by Alex Heffes. A soundtrack album has been released digitally on Silva Screen Records and will be available as a physical CD in February. Check out our previous article on the announcement.
Also coming out is Simon West’s The Mechanic starring Jason Statham and Ben Foster. The film is scored by Mark Isham. A soundtrack has been released in three different versions on Isham’ own label MIM Records. The Assassin’s Edition is a six track EP of selections from the score (visit Amazon or iTunes to download and listen to clips from the album). The Complete Collector’s Edition features the complete underscore that includes bonus tracks not used in the film (visit Amazon or iTunes).
‘Biutiful’ soundtrack album released
Relativity Music Group has released a soundtrack album for Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu’s drama Biutiful starring Javier Bardem. The album includes almost an hour of Gustavo Santaolalla’s original score, as well as several source tracks from the film. The album is currently available to download on Amazon and iTunes. Check out the links for audio clips from the soundtrack. A physical 2 CD release with the title Biutful/Almost Biutiful – Deluxe Edition will be released on February 8. Visit Amazon to pre-order the set. The movie will be released on January 28 by Roadside Attractions after receiving a limited Oscar-qualifying run at the end of last year.
Weekly Film Music Roundup (December 31, 2010)
While no new movies open wide this weekend, four movies are receiving a limited release to qualify for Acadmy Awards consideration. All movies are expected to expand over the next couple of weeks.

Gustavo Santaolalla is scoring the upcoming adventure drama On the Road. The film is directed by Walter Salles who previously worked together with the composer on The Motorcycle Diaries and 2008’s Linha de Passe. The movie stars Sam Riley, Kirsten Dunst, Kristen Stewart and Garrett Hedlund. On the Road is based on the 1957 novel by Jack Kerouac and is produced by Francis Ford Coppola. A release date in 2011 is expected.
