Three new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:

Expected to top the weekend box office is the animated feature The Croods directed by Chris Sanders & Kirk DeMicco and featuring the voice talent of Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone, Catherine Keener, Clark Duke and Cloris Leachman. Alan Silvestri (Back to the Future Forrest Gump) has composed the film’s score. Relativity Music Group has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as the original song Shine Your Way performed by Yuna feat. Owl City earlier this week. Also opening wide is the action thriller Olympus Has Fallen directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Gerard Butler, Angela Bassett, Robert Forster, Ashley Judd, Melissa Leo, Dylan McDermott, Cole Hauser, Radha Mitchell and Rick Yune. The film’s score is composed by Trevor Morris (Immortals, The Tudors, The Borgias). Relativity Music Group has released a soundtrack album featuring Morris’ score earlier this week. Two new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:

Opening in most theaters is the fantasy adventure Oz the Great and Powerful directed by Sam Raimi and starring James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams and Zach Braff. Danny Elfman composed the film’s original score. Walt Disney Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score digitally earlier this week. Intrada Records will release a physical version. Check out our previous article for the full album details. Mariah Carey has contributed the original song Almost Home to the film. Also opening wide is the crime thriller Dead Man Down directed byNiels Arden Oplev and starring Colin Farrell, Noomi Rapace, Terrence Howard, Dominic Cooper, Isabelle Huppert and Armand Assante. The film’s score is composed by Jacob Groth (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Unforgettable). Varese Sarabande will release a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score on April 2, 2013. Alex Heffes to Score ‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom’

Alex Heffes has been hired to score the upcoming biographical drama Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. The film is directed by Justin Chadwick (The Other Boleyn Girl) and stars Idris Elba in the title role as the South African civil rights leader and Naomie Harris as Nelson Mandela’s wife, Winnie. Tony Kgoroge, Riaad Moosa, Zolani Mkiva, Jamie Bartlett, Lindiwe Matshikiza, Deon Lotz and Terry Pheto are co-starring. William Nicholson (Gladiator, Les Miserables) has written the screenplay based on Mandela’s autobiography. The movie is produced by Anant Singh (Pulse) who started communicating with Mandela about making a film based on his life while he was still in prison and acquired the film rights to Mandela’s book at the time of its publication in 1996. Heffes has previously collaborated with Chadwick on his previous feature The First Grader.

‘Emperor’ Soundtrack Announced

Lakeshore Records has announced a soundtrack release for the historical drama Emperor. The album features the film’s original music composed by Alex Heffes (The Last King of Scotland, The Rite, State of Play). The soundtrack will be released digitally on March 5, 2013 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Audio clips can be checked out after the jump. Emperor directed by Peter Webber and starring Matthew Fox, Tommy Lee Jones and Eriko Hatsune is set in post-World War II during the American occupation of Japan. The drama follows an American general who is tasked with deciding if Emperor Hirohito will be hanged as a war criminal. The movie premiered at last year’s Toronto Film Festival and will be released on March 8, 2013 by Roadside Attractions.

Alex Heffes to Score ‘The Tomb’

Alex Heffes is reuniting with director Mikael Hafstrom on the upcoming action thriller The Tomb. The film starring Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger follows an expert on structural security who is put to the test when he is framed and put in a high-security prison of his own design and must find the person who put him there. Amy Ryan, Jim Caviezel, Vincent D’Onofrio, Vinnie Jones, Sam Neill and 50 Cent are also starring in the film. Randall Emmett & George Furla (16 Blocks, The Bad Lieutenant) are producing the Emmett/Furla Films and Summit Entertainment production with Mark Canton (300, Immortals), Robbie Brenner (Machine Gun Preacher) and Kevin King-Templeton (The Expendables, Rocky Balboa).

Alex Heffes to Score Peter Webber’s ‘Emperor’

Alex Heffes has signed on to score the upcoming historical drama Emperor. The film is directed by Peter Webber (The Girl with the Pearl Earring) and stars Matthew Fox and Tommy Lee Jones, as well as Japanese actors Eriko Hatsune and Toshiyuki Nishida. The movie is set in post-World War II during the American occupation of Japan and is based on the real-life story of whether Emperor Hirohito be tried and hanged as a war criminal. Yoko Narahashi (The Last Samurai), Gary Foster (Daredevil), Russ Krasnoff (The Soloist) and Eugene Nomura are producing the Krasnoff/Foster Entertainment and United Performer’s Studio Production. Emperor is currently in post-production.

Alex Heffes to Score ‘AWOL’

Alex Heffes has been tapped to score the upcoming Vietnam War-set drama AWOL. The film marks the directorial debut of Danny Mooney and stars Liam Hemsworth, Teresa Palmer, Austin Stowell, Aimee Teegarden, Chris Howell and Max Adler. The movie is based on the true story about a young soldier in Vietnam who is dumped by his hometown girlfriend and – together with his best friend – returns to the States to win her back. Jim Burnstein (Renaissance Man) and Garrett Schiff have written the screenplay and also serve as executive producers. Chip Diggins and Patrick Olson are producing the Deep Blue Pictures, Red 56 and Peninsula Films production.

‘World Soundtrack Awards’ Winners Announced

The World Soundtrack Academy announced the winners of the World Soundtrack Awards 2011 at last night’s closing event of the 38th Ghent International Film Festival. Alexandre Desplat was chosen as Film Composer of the Year 2011. Hans Zimmer received the award for Best Orginal Film Score of the Year for Inception and Randy Newman was awarded for his song We Belong Together from Toy Story 3 in the Best Original Song Written for Film category. Alex Heffes received the Discovery of the Year Award for The First Grader & The Rite. The Public Choice Award went to A.R. Rahman for the film 127 hours. Among the composers in attendance at the event were Giorgio Moroder who was the recipient of the World Soundtrack Lifetime Achievement Award, as well as Gabriel Yared, Hans Zimmer, Elliot Goldenthal, Alexandre Desplat, Alex Heffes and Abel Korzeniowski.

‘The First Grader’ Soundtrack Details

Varese Sarabande Records has announced the details for the soundtrack release of the drama The First Grader. The album includes Alex Heffes‘ original score from the movie. Heffes’ music features evocative vocals recorded in Kenya. The album will be released on June 14, 2011. To pre-order the soundtrack, visit Amazon. The First Grader directed by Justin Chadwick and starring Naomie Harris and Oliver Litondo is based on the true story of an 84-year-old Kenyan man’s battle to get an education. The film is currently playing in select theaters.

Two new movies are opening wide this weekend:

The 3D horror thriller Priest directed by Scott Charles Stewart and starring Paul Bettany, Cam Gigandet, Maggie Q, Karl Urban, Lily Collins and Christopher Plummer is opening in almost 3000 theaters. Christopher Young has composed the music for the film. A soundtrack album has been released by Madison Gate Records this past Tuesday. Check out our soundtrack announcement for more information.

Also opening nationwide is the comedy Bridesmaids directed by Paul Feig, produced by Judd Apatow and starring Kirsten Wiig, Rose Byrne, Maya Rudolph and Jon Hamm. The film’s score is written by Michael Andrews. A soundtrack album, featuring twelve songs from the film, as well as one score track by Andrews has been released by Relativity Music.
