Cosmos Studios Music will release a second soundtrack album for the Fox docu-series Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey. The Volume 2 soundtrack features more music from the show composed by Alan Silvestri (Forrest Gump, Back to the Future trilogy, The Avengers). The album will be released on March 30, 2014 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Audio clips are embedded after the jump. As previously reported, the first of four planned soundtracks featuring music from the series is now available to download. Also premiering tonight is the new ABC drama Resurrection created by by Aaron Zelman and starring Omar Epps, Matt Craven, Devin Kelley, Frances Fisher, Kurtwood Smith, Sam Hazeldine, Samaire Armstrong, Mark Hildreth and Landon Gimenez. The show’s original music is composed by Blake Neely (Arrow, The Mentalist, Everwood, Life As We Know It). Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey executive produced by Seth MacFarlane, Ann Druyan, Mitchell Cannold and Brannon Braga is the successor to the 1980 Emmy and Peabody Award-winning original series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage scored by Vangelis. The 13-part series is hosted by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson and explores how we discovered the laws of nature and found our coordinates in space and time.
‘Back to the Future’ Musical Update
In 2012, we reported that composer Alan Silvestri was in talks to transfer his music for Robert Zemeckis’ classic Back to the Future into a Broadway stage musical. Today, it was announced that the musical is headed for the London stage and is scheduled to open in the movie’s 30th anniversary in 2015. Silvestri is writing new original songs for the production with Glen Ballard. They previously collaborated on songs for the features The Polar Express, Beowulf and last year’s The Croods. The musical will also feature additional music from the film by Huey Lewis & The News and will incorporate Silvestri’s score from the movie. The stage production’s book is written by Zemeckis, Bob Gale and Jamie Lloyd who will also be directing the Amblin Entertainment, Colin Ingram, Universal Stage Productions, Donovan Mannato and CJ E&M production.
Alan Silvestri to Score ‘Cosmos – A Spacetime Odyssey’
Seth MacFarlane has announced on Twitter that Alan Silvestri is scoring the upcoming docu-series Cosmos – A Spacetime Odyssey. The show is a successor to the 1980 Emmy and Peabody Award-winning original series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage and will explore how we discovered the laws of nature and found our coordinates in space and time. Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson will host the 13-part series, which invents new modes of scientific storytelling to reveal the grandeur of the universe and re-invent celebrated elements of the original series, including the Cosmic Calendar and the Ship of the Imagination, MacFarlane is executive producing the Cosmos Studios and Fuzzy Door production with Ann Druyan, Mitchell Cannold and Brannon Braga (Star Trek, 24).
Alan Silvestri to Headline Chattanooga International Film Music Festival
Academy Award-nominated composer Alan Silvestri (Forrest Gump, The Avengers) will be the the special guest film music composer for the Chattanooga Symphony & Opera at the 2014 Chattanooga International Film Music Festival, which will take place from February 28 through March 2, 2014. He will join the festival’s artistic director, Emmy Award-nominee George S. Clinton (Austin Powers, Tooth Fairy, Wild Things), for a weekend of seminars with composers such as Clinton and Sundance Film Music Program director Peter Golub. There will also be a panel discussion moderated by BMI’s Doreen Ringer Ross, a screening of Robert Zemeckis’ Back to the Future followed by a discussion with Silvestri, as well as open rehearsals and two film music concerts with the Chattanooga Symphony & Opera.
Awards Contenders in Conversation
The Hollywood Reporter published its yearly roundtable conversation with a number of film composers in contention for the major awards. This year’s participating composers include Hans Zimmer (Rush, 12 Years a Slave), Thomas Newman (Saving Mr. Banks), Alan Silvestri (The Croods), Steven Price (Gravity), Christophe Beck (Frozen) and Henry Jackman (Captain Phillips). The composers talk about the biggest musical challenges on their films this year, their own personal favorite scores of their career and whether they look at box office numbers of the movies they scored. Alan Silvestri’s ‘Blown Away’ Score Released
Intrada Records has announced the world premiere soundtrack release for 1994 action thriller Blown Away directed by Stephen Hopkins and starring Jeff Bridges, Tommy Lee Jones, Lloyd Bridges and Forest Whitaker. The album features the film’s original score composed and conducted by Alan Silvestri (The Avengers, Back to the Future, Forrest Gump). The composer incorporated brief segments of Tchaikovsky 1812 Overture into his music. Only one cue from the score was previously available.
