The World Soundtrack Academy has announced the nominees for the 2012 World Soundtrack Awards to be presented in three categories: Film Composer of the Year, Best Original Score of the Year and Best Original Song Written Directly for a Film. The winners will be announced at the World Soundtrack Awards & concert on Saturday, October 20, the closing night of the Ghent International Film Festival. Here are the nominations:

Decca Music has released the soundtrack album A Symphony of British Music -Music from the Closing Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games. The album includes selections from the original music from the ceremony written by film/TV composer David Arnold (Casino Royale, Independence Day, Stargate) who acted as the music director of the event. Among the songs featured on the release are Blur’s Parklike, Russell Brand’s take on I Am The Walrus and Eric Idle’s performance of Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life. Also included are songs by Muse, Elbow, The Who, Spice Girls, Take That, Ed Sheeran, Jessie J and George Michael. The soundtrack is now available to download on iTunes, where you can also listen to audio clips. A physical version is scheduled to be released on August 20, 2012 in the UK. ‘Ombline’ Soundtrack Details

Naïve Records will be releasing a soundtrack album for the French drama Ombline. The album features the film’s original score composed by Cyrille Aufort (SpliceA Royal Affair), as well as two tracks by La Kumpania Zelwer and a song by Casey. The soundtrack will be released digitally on September 10, 2012 (and physically as an import) and will be available to download on Amazon. Ombline is written and directed by Stéphane Cazes and stars Mélanie Thierry as a 20-year-old woman who finds out that she is pregnant and obliged to give birth while incarcerated. Nathalie Becue, Corinne Masiero and Catherine Salee are co-starring. The film premiered at the Paris Cinema Fest last month and will be released in France on September 12, 2012. James Levine is scoring the new TNT crime drama Major Crimes. The show is a spin-off of the hit procedural The Closer, which will air its series finale next Monday, August 13. The series stars Mary McDonnell, G. W. Bailey, Tony Denison, Michael Paul Chan, Raymond Cruz and Phillip P. Keene who are all reprising their roles from The Closer. They are joined by new cast members Kearran Giovanni and Graham Patrick Martin. James Duff, Michael M. Robin, Rick Wallace and Greer Shephard are executive producing the show. Levine whose TV scoring credits include such hit shows as GleeNip/Tuck, Damages, Rizzoli & Isles and American Horror Story has written the music for all seven seasons of The Closer. La-La Land Records has announced a new limited edition box set of music from the sci-fi TV show Star Trek: The Original Series. The 15-CD box set features all episode scores as heard in all three original seasons of the original Star Trek series (1966-1969). The show’s music is composed by Alexander Courage, George Duning, Jerry Fielding, Gerald Fried, Sol Kaplan, Samuel Matlovsky and Joseph Mullendore. In addition to the the complete scores featured in the series (including hours of previously unreleased material), the soundtrack collection also includes music that didn’t make the final cut. Three new studio features are opening nationwide this weekend:

Expected to top the weekend box office is the action thriller The Bourne Legacy directed and co-written by Tony Gilroy and starring Jeremy Renner, Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, Stacy Keach, Albert Finney, Scott Glenn, David Strathairn and Joan Allen. The film’s score is composed by James Newton Howard. A soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as a new version of Moby’s track Extreme Ways has been released on Back Lot Music and Varese Sarabande. Also opening wide is the political comedy The Campaign directed by Jay Roach and starring Will Ferrell, Zach Galifianakis, Jason Sudekis, Brian Cox, Dylan McDermott, Sarah Baker, Katherine LaNasa, Dan Akroyd and John Lithgow. The film’s score is composed by Theodore Shapiro who previously worked with Roach on the comedy Dinner for Schmucks and this year’s HBO drama Game Change. A soundtrack album was set to be released by WaterTower Music as listed in the film’s credits, but no announcement has been made yet. Walt Disney Records has announced a soundtrack album for Tim Burton’s stop-motion animated feature Frankenweenie. The album includes the original song Strange Love written for the film by Karen O (Where the Wild Things Are). Also featured on the release are songs by artists including Neon Trees, Passion Pit, Grouplove, Kimbra, Plain White T’s, Robert Smith and Imagine Dragons. The soundtrack will be released on September 25, 2012 and can now be pre-ordered on Amazon. Audio clips will be added to this article next month. As previously reported, the label is also releasing a separate soundtrack featuring Danny Elfman’s original score from the movie (click here for the recently added cover art). Frankenweenie features the voice talent of Catherine O’Hara, Martin Short and Winona Ryder and centers on a pet dog who is brought back to life by his loyal owner after it is struck by a car. Ludwig Göransson is scoring the upcoming indie drama Fruitvale. The film marks the feature directing debut of Ryan Coogler. The movie starring Michael B. Jordan, Octavia Spencer, Kevin Durand, Chad Michael Murray, Melonie Diaz, Ahna O’Reilly and Tristan Wilds tells the true story of Oscar Grant, a young black man detained on New Year’s Day 2009 by the Bay Area Rapid Transit police and shot in the back and killed. Nonesuch Records will be releasing the soundtrack album for Paul Thomas Anderson’s highly anticipated drama The Master. The album features the film’s original music composed by Jonny Greenwood who previously collaborated with the director on 2007’s There Will Be Blood. The soundtrack will be released on September 11, 2012 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. The full album details will be posted on this site within the next couple of weeks. The Master stars Phillip Seymour Hoffman as a charismatic intellectual who hatches a faith-based organization that begins to catch on in America in 1952. Nick Urata will perform an intimate show at Largo at the Coronet on Thursday, August 16 in Los Angeles to celebrate the release of his soundtrack to Ruby Sparks. The composer and DeVotchKa frontman will be accompanied by an eight-piece ensemble and perform selections from the score for Ruby Sparks, other score pieces he composed, including the music to Little Miss Sunshine and I Love You Phillip Morris, as well as solo material.
