Danny Elfman was honored with a Saturn Award tonight at the 39th annual Saturn Awards, presented by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films. The composer won the award in the Best Music category for his score for Tim Burton’s animated feature Frankenweenie, which was also recognized in the Best Animated Film category. The other nominated composers were Mychael Danna (Life of Pi), Dario Marianelli (Anna Karenina), Thomas Newman (Skyfall), Howard Shore (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey) and Hans Zimmer (The Dark Knight Rises). Weekly Film Music Roundup (October 5, 2012)
Two new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the action thriller Taken 2 directed by Olivier Megaton and starring Liam Neeson, Maggie Grace, Famke Janssen and Rade Šerbedžija. The film’s music is composed by Nathaniel Mechaly who previously scored the 2008 original film. A soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as songs by artists including Phoebe Killdeer and the Short Straws, Kasbah Rockers and College & Electric Youth has been released digitally earlier this week. A video from the scoring sessions of Tim Burton’s stop-motion animated film Frankenweenie was published this week and shows footage from the recording sessions in London earlier this year with composer Danny Elfman and Burton in attendance. The track list of the soundtrack album for Walt Disney Pictures’ stop-motion animated 3D feature Frankenweenie has been revealed. The album features 22 tracks from the original score composed by Danny Elfman. The soundtrack will be released on September 25, 2012 by Walt Disney Records and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Audio clips will be added to this article in a few weeks. As previously announced, the label is also releasing a second soundtrack album featuring the movie’s songs. Danny Elfman to Reunite with Tim Burton on ‘Frankenweenie’
Danny Elfman is set to reunite with director Tim Burton on the upcoming stop-motion animated movie Frankenweenie. The film is based on Burton’s 1984 short film about a pet dog brought back to life by his loyal owner after it is struck by a car. The movie’s voice talent includes several actors who have previously worked with the director, including Winona Ryder, Martin Landau, Martin Short and Catherine O’Hara. John August (Big Fish, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride) is writing the screenplay. The project is the 14th collaboration between the composer and the director and the first one after their first billion-dollar movie Alice in Wonderland. The stop-motion animation film will be shot in black and white and rendered in 3D.
