One movie is opening in wide release this weekend:

Expected to beat box office opening weekend records for the month of December is the fantasy movie The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey directed by Peter Jackson and starring Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Graham McTavish, Andy Serkis, Christopher Lee, Benedict Cumberbatch, Hugo Weaving, James Nesbitt, Orlando Bloom, Ian Holm and Elijah Wood. The film’s music is composed and conducted by Howard Shore who has previously scored The Lord of the Rings trilogy. WaterTower Music has released two soundtrack albums featuring the composer’s score, including a standard and deluxe edition. Also featured on both albums is the original song Song of the Lonely Mountain written and performed by Neil Finn. Ryan Miller to Score Lake Bell’s ‘In a World…’

Ryan Miller is scoring the upcoming indie comedy In a World…. The film marks the feature directorial debut of Lake Bell and stars herself as a struggling vocal coach who musters the courage to pursue her secret aspiration to be a voice-over star. Demetri Martin, Rob Corddry, Michaela Watkins, Ken Marino and Fred Melamed are co-starring. Bell has also written the screenplay and is producing the film with Mark Roberts, Jett Steiger (Goats) and Eddie Vaisman. Miller who is best known as the lead singer and principal songwriter for the alt-rock band Guster has previously scored a number of films, including this year’s critically acclaimed indie comedy Safety Not Guaranteed and the Patton Oswalt-starring comedy Nature Calls. In a World… will be premiering in competition at next year’s Sundance Film Festival.

‘The Snowman and the Snowdog’ Soundtrack Announced

Play It Again Sam Recordings will release a soundtrack album for the British animated short The Snowman and the Snowdog. The album features the film’s original music composed by Ilan Eshkeri (Coriolanus, Stardust, Johnny English Reborn) and singer/songwriter Andy Burrows, including the song Light The Night, which is also available as a single (check out the music video after the jump). The soundtrack will be released in the UK on December 17, 2012. Click here to listen to audio clips. The Snowman and the Snowdog is a sequel to the 1982 Academy Award-nominated animated special The Snowman based on the children’s book by Raymond Briggs. ‘The Imposter’ Soundtrack Details

Redrocca will release a soundtrack album for the documentary The Imposter. The album features the film’s original score composed by Anne Nikitin. The soundtrack will be released digitally on December 14, 2012 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Check out audio clips after the jump. The Imposter is directed by Bart Layton centers on French confidence man Frédéric Bourdin who convinces a grieving Texas family that he is their 16-year-old son who went missing for 3 years. The film premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and was released in theaters this past summer by Idomina. John Frizzell to Score Fox’s ‘The Following’

John Frizzell has signed on to score the upcoming Fox drama The Following. The show is created by Kevin Williamson (Scream, Dawson’s Creek) and stars Kevin Bacon as an ex-FBI agent who is recruited to recapture an escaped serial killer. James Purefoy, Jeananne Goossen, Maggie Grace, Natalie Zea, Adan Canto, Nico Tortorella and Shawn Ashmore are co-starring. Marcos Siega (Dexter, The Vampire Diaries) is executive producing the project with Williams and also directed the pilot. Frizzell has previously collaborated with Williamson on his feature directorial debut Teaching Mrs. Tingle starring Katie Holmes & Helen Mirren and last season’s CW drama The Secret Circle. Soundtrack for HBO’s ‘Girls’ Announced

Fueled by Ramen has announced a soundtrack release for HBO’s critically acclaimed comedy drama series Girls. The album features songs from the show by artists including Santihold, Grouplove, Fun., Robyn, Harper Simon, Belle & Sebastian, The Vaccines and Icona Pop. Also featured is the original song On Your Way from the finale of the first season by the series’ composer Michael Penn. The soundtrack will be released on January 8, 2013. The CD version is now available for pre-order on Amazon. A digital release including four additional tracks will also be released the same day. Girls created by and starring Lena Dunham and produced by Judd Apatow follows a close group of twenty-somethings as they chart their lives in New York City. Ravi Shankar (1920 – 2012)

Musician and composer Ravi Shankar passed away today at a San Diego hospital at age 92. His best known work for film is his score for Richard Attenborough’s 1982 Oscar-winning biopic Gandhi, which he composed with George Fenton and for which he received an Academy Award, as well as a Grammy and BAFTA nomination. His other film scoring credits include the 1968 drama Charly starring Cliff Robertson and Claire Bloom and Satyajit Ray’s Apu Trilogy. He was honored with three Grammy Awards for his music besides his film work and collaborated with such artists as violinist Yehudi Menuhin and George Harrison of The Beatles. Shankar is the father of Grammy Award-winning singer Norah Jones and sitar player Anoushka Shankar.

Academy Announces 75 Original Songs in Oscar Race

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has announced the short list of 75 songs that are in contention for nominations in the Original Song category for the 85th Academy Awards. During the nominations process, all voting members of the Music Branch will receive a Reminder List of works submitted in the category and a DVD copy of the song clips. Members will be asked to watch the clips and then vote in the order of their preference for not more than five achievements in the category. The nominations will be announced on January 10, 2013.
