Three new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:

risenOpening in most theaters is the biblical drama Risen directed by Kevin Reynolds and starring Joseph Fiennes, Tom Felon, Peter Firth and Cliff Curtis. The film’s original music is composed by Roque Banos (The MachinistIn the Heart of the SeaEvil DeadSexy BeastOldboy). Madison Gate Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score last week. raceAlso opening wide is the sports drama Race directed by Stephen Hopkins and starring Stephan James, Jason Sudeikis, Jeremy Irons, William Hurt and Carice van Houten. Rachel Portman (The Cider House RulesChocolatThe Manchurian CandidateEmma) has composed the film’s original music. Back Lot Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as the original song Let The Games Begin by Aloe Blacc. crazy-ex-girlfriendWaterTower Music has released the first full soundtrack album for the CW musical comedy drama Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. The album features the songs from the show written by Rachel Bloom, Adam Schlesinger and Jack Dolgen and performed by the series’ cast. Jerome Kurtenbach co-wrote the song West Covina from the pilot episode. Also included are five original song demos. The soundtrack is now available to download on Amazon, where you can also check out audio samples. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is created by Aline Brosh McKenna & Rachel Bloom who also stars in the show alongside Santino Fontana, Donna Lynne Champlin, Vincent Rodriguez III, Pete Gardner, Vella Lovell and Gabrielle Ruiz. midnight-specialWaterTower Music will release the official soundtrack album for Jeff Nichols’ sci-fi thriller Midnight Special. The album features the film’s original music composed by David Wingo (All the Real Girls, Our Brand Is Crisis, Joe, George Washington) who previously collaborated with the director on Take Shelter and Mud. The soundtrack will be released digitally on March 11, 2016 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon, where you can also check out audio clips. Midnight Special is written and directed by Nichols and stars Michael Shannon, Joel Edgerton, Kirsten Dunst, Adam Driver, Jaeden Lieberher, Sam Shepard, Bill Camp, Scott Haze and Paul Sparks. Harold Wheeler Named Oscar Music Director

harold-wheelerAcademy Awards producers David Hill and Reginald Hudlin today announced that Harold Wheeler was selected as music director for this year’s 88th Oscars. He returns for the third Oscar telecast, his first as music director. Wheeler is best known as an orchestrator, composer, conductor, record producer and arranger and has received numerous Emmy and Tony Award nominations. His television credits include the People’s Choice Awards, the AFI’s 100 Years… series, and ABC’s Dancing with the Stars. He also composed music for two Democratic National Conventions and the opening ceremonies of the 1996 Summer Olympics. Read the rest of this entry »

‘Vinyl’ Vol. 1.2 Soundtrack Released

vinyl-2Atlantic Records has released a new EP for the HBO original series Vinyl. The soundtrack features the songs from the second episode of the show by The Del-Tino’s, Aimee Mann, Jerry Lee Lewis, Julian Casablancas and Don Covay. The EP is now available to download on Amazon, where you can also listen to audio samples. The label has previously released a full soundtrack album for the show and over the next couple of weeks will release new EPs every week with the songs from each episode. Vinyl created by Terence Winter, executive produced by Martin Scorsese and starring Bobby Cannavale, Olivia Wilde, Ray Romano, Juno Temple, Ato Essandoh, P. J. Byrne, J. C. les-habitantsAlexandre Desplat is scoring the upcoming French documentary France (Les habitants). The film is directed by Raymond Depardon (Journal de France) and follows the filmmaker as he drives through France, from the north to the south, and stops in front of homes and places of business to meet the people of France. Claudine Nougaret is producing the project for Palmeraie et Désert. The documentary will be released in France on April 27, 2016. Check out a teaser trailer for the film after the jump. ‘Girls’ Vol. 3 Soundtrack Details

girls-3Interscope Records will release a new soundtrack album for the HBO original series Girls. The album features a selection of songs from the show by artists including Ellie Goulding, Bleachers and Grimes, St. Vincent, BØRNS, Lucy Rose, Casey Veggies, Matrimony, Christine and the Queens & more. Also included are two tracks from the show’s original score composed by Michael Penn (Masters of Sex, Boogie Nights). The soundtrack will be released digitally tomorrow, February 19 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon, where you can also listen to audio samples. Fueled by Ramen and Atlantic Records have previously released the Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 soundtracks fro the series. craig-armstrongThe American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) announced today that composer Craig Armstrong will be honored at the 31st Annual Screen Music Awards (previously known as ASCAP Film and Television Music Awards) on March 24, 2016 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, California. Armstrong will receive the Henry Mancini Award, which is given to composers for outstanding achievements and contributions to the world of music for film, television and visual media. The composer is known for his numerous collaborations with director Baz Luhrmann, including Romeo & JulietThe Great Gatsby and Moulin Rouge!, for which he received a Golden Globe and BAFTA Award. miracles-from-heavenCarlo Siliotto has composed the music for the upcoming drama Miracles from Heaven. The film is directed by Patricia Riggen and stars Jennifer Garner, Martin Henderson, John Carroll Lynch, Kylie Rogers, Eugenio Derbez and Queen Latifah. The movie is based on the book by Christy Beam and follows a woman whose daughter has a rare, incurable disease and becomes a ferocious advocate for her child’s healing as she searches for a solution. Randy Brown (Trouble with the Curve) has written the screenplay. Joe Roth (Alice in WonderlandMaleficentOz the Great and Powerful), T.D. the-crossingA soundtrack album will be released for John Woo’s epic drama The Crossing. The album features the film’s original music composed by Taro Iwashiro who previously collaborated with the director on 2008’s Red Cliff. Also included are two different versions of Song of Autumn Silver Grass performed by Hitomi Yaida. The soundtrack will be released in Asia on March 11, 2016 and is now available for pre-order as an import on AmazonThe Crossing stars Zhang Ziyi, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Song Hye-kyo, Huang Xiaoming, Tong Dawei and Masami Nagasawa. The movie is set against the upheavals of revolutionary China in 1949 and tells the story of three couples from different backgrounds who find themselves on the ocean liner “Taiping,” which sinks during the crossing between mainland China and Taipei.
