Michel Legrand has passed away today at age 86 in Paris, France. The composer has written over 200 film/TV scores and songs over a five-decade spanning career. He received three Academy Awards for his scores for Robert Mulligan’s Summer of ’42 and Barbra Streisand’s Yentl and the song The Windmills of Your Mind from Norman Jewison’s The Thomas Crown Affair. He was Oscar-nominated several other times for his music Jacques Demy’s The Umbrellas of Cherbourg & The Young Girls of Rochefort, songs from Richard Brooks’ The Happy Ending, Daniel Haller’s Pieces of Dreams and Norman Jewison’s Best Friends. Two new movies are opening nationwide this week:
Opening in most theaters is the fantasy adventure The Kid Who Would Be King written and directed by Joe Cornish and starring Louis Ashbourne Serkis, Dean Chaumoo, Tom Taylor, Rhianna Dorris, Angus Imrie, Rebecca Ferguson and Patrick Stewart. The film’s original music is composed by Electric Wave Bureau (Broken). Milan Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the music collective’s score. Click here for the full album details.
Also opening wide is the mystery thriller Serenity written and directed by Steven Knight and starring Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jason Clarke, Diane Lane, Djimon Hounsou and Jeremy Strong. Benjamin Wallfisch (It, Blade Runner 2049, Shazam!, Hidden Figures, Annabelle Creation) has composed the film’s original music. Ethan Gold (The Song of Sway Lake) has composed the original music for the upcoming thriller Relive. The film is directed by Jacob Estes (The Details) and stars David Oyelowo, Storm Reid, Mykelti Williamson, Alfred Molina, Brian Tyree Henry and Shinelle Azoroh. The movie follows a man who – after a man’s family dies in what appears to be a murder – gets a phone call from one of the dead, his niece. Estes also co-wrote the screenplay with Drew Daywalt. The episode, entitled Down, is directed by Daniel Stamm (The Last Exorcism, 13 Sins) and stars Natalie Martinez, Matt Lauria, Arnie Pantoja, Diane Sellers, and Christina Leone. John Powell is reteaming with director Chris Sanders (The Croods, Lilo & Stitch) on the upcoming adventure drama Call of the Wild. The film stars Harrison Ford, Dan Stevens, Karen Gillan, Bradley Whitford, Cara Gee and Omar Sy. The movie is based on Jack London’s 1903 novel and tells the story of a sled dog that tries to survive the Alaskan wilderness as well as a series of abusive owners.
