Four new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the action thriller Jack Reacher: Never Go Back directed by Edward Zwick and starring Tom Cruise, Cobie Smulders, Aldis Hodge, Danika Yarosh, Patrick Heusinger, Holt McCallany and Robert Knepper. The film’s original music is composed by Henry Jackman (Captain America: Civil War, X-Men: First Class, Big Hero 6, Captain Phillips). Also opening wide is the horror thriller Ouija: Origin of Evil directed by Mike Flanagan and starring Henry Thomas, Elizabeth Reaser, Doug Jones, Parker Mack, Sam Anderson, Kate Siegel, Annalise Basso and Lulu Wilson. The Newton Brothers (Oculus, Life of Crime, Hush, Detachment, The Bye Bye Man) have composed the film’s original music. Back Lot Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composers’ score. Also opening nationwide is the comedy Keeping Up with the Joneses directed by Greg Mottola and starring Zach Galifianakis, Jon Hamm, Isla Fisher and Gal Gadot. The film’s original music is composed by Jake Monaco (Let’s Be Cops, Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie, Struck by Lightning, Kindergarten Cop 2). Christophe Beck (Frozen, Ant-Man, The Hangover) has produced Monaco’s score. No word on a soundtrack release. The fourth wide release this week is the comedy Boo! A Madea Halloween written and directed by Tyler Perry and starring Perry himself, Cassi Davis, Patrice Lovely, Lexy Panterra, Yousef Erakat, Andre Hall, Brock O’Hurn and Bella Thorne. Elvin Ross (Diary of a Mad Black Woman, Madea Goes to Jail, Madea’s Family Reunion, Too Close to Home). No soundtrack album has been announced. Opening semi-wide in around 500 theaters is the drama I’m Not Ashamed directed by Brian Baugh and starring Masey McLain, Sadie Robertson, Ben Davies, Korie Robertson, Jaci Velasquez and Jennifer O’Neill. The film’s original music is composed by Timothy Williams (Wild Horses, Sym-Bionic Titan, I.T., Walking with the Enemy). Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. Opening in New York and Los Angeles before expanding to more cities within the next few weeks is the drama Moonlight written and directed by Barry Jenkins and starring Naomie Harris, Andre Holland, Mahershala Ali, Janelle Monae, Alex R. Hibbert, Jaden Piner, Ashton Sanders, Trevante Rhodes and Jharrel Jerome. Nicholas Britell (The Big Short, Free State of Jones) has composed the film’s original music. Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as songs by Goodie Mob, Boris Gardiner and Barbara Lewis. Also opening in limited release is the drama American Pastoral directed by Ewan McGregor who also stars in the film alongside Jennifer Connelly, Dakota Fanning, Uzo Aduba and David Strathairn. The film’s original music is composed by Alexandre Desplat (The Grand Budapest Hotel, The King’s Speech, Godzilla, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows). Another limited release this week is the Korean thriller The Handmaiden directed by Park Chan-wook and starring Kim Min-hee, Ha Jung-woo, Kim Tae-ri and Cho Jin-woong. Yeong-wook Jo (Oldboy, Thirst) has composed the film’s original music. A soundtrack album featuring the music from the film is now available to download on iTunes. The movie, which follows a young Japanese lady living on a secluded estate, and a Korean woman who is hired to serve as her new handmaiden, premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and is being released by Amazon Studios and Magnolia Pictures. Also opening in select theaters this week is the mystery drama Autumn Lights written and directed by Angad Aulakh and starring Guy Kent, Marta Gastini, Sveinn Ólafur Gunnarsson, Thora Bjorg Helga, Salome R. Gunnarsdottir, Stefán Hallur Stefánsson and Snorri Engilbertsson. The film’s original music is composed by Hugi Gudmundsson and Hjörtur Ingvi Jóhannsson. Also opening in select cities is the western In a Valley of Violence written and directed by Ti West and starring Ethan Hawke, Taissa Farmiga, James Ransone, Karen Gillan and John Travolta. Another limited release this week is the documentary Before the Flood directed by Fisher Stevens about Leonardo DiCaprio’s campaign to raise global awareness about the dangers of climate change. The film’s original music is composed by Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross (The Social Network, Gone Girl), Gustavo Santaolalla (Brokeback Mountain, Babel, The Motorcycle Diaries) and Mogwai. Also opening in limited release is the horror thriller 31 written and directed by Rob Zombie and starring Sheri Moon Zombie, Malcom McDowell, Meg Foster, Elizabeth Daily, Sandra Rosko and Richard Brake. John 5 and Zombie have composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been announced. 31 follows five carnival workers who are kidnapped and held hostage in an abandoned, Hell-like compound where they are forced to participate in a violent game. The thriller premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and is being released by Lionsgate Premiere.
Also opening in select markets is the thriller The Whole Truth directed by Courtney Hunt and starring Keanu Reeves, Renée Zellweger, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Gabriel Basso and Jim Belushi. The film’s original music is composed by Sacha and Evgueni Galperine (The Family, Nine Lives, Madam Bovary, The Past). No word on a soundtrack release. The Whole Truth follows a defense attorney who works to get his teenage client acquitted of murdering his wealthy father. The thriller is being released in select theaters and on VOD by Lionsgate Premiere.
