Michael Giacchino confirmed during a Q&A at a concert featuring the world premiere performance of his Star Trek score performed live to projection in Lucerne, Switzerland this weekend that he is attached to score Brad Bird’s upcoming sci-fi adventure Tomorrowland. The film is set to star George Clooney and Hugh Laurie. Plot details are being kept under wraps, but according to Hitfix, the movie is supposed to follow a “teenage girl, a genius middle-aged manand a pre-pubescent girl robot who attempt to get to and unravel what happened to Tomorrowland, which exists in an alternative dimension, in order to save Earth”. Damon Lindelof (Lost, Prometheus) is writing the screenplay with Bird based on a concept by himself and Jeff Jensen and is also producing the project with Bird. Tomorrowland will mark the composer’s fourth collaboration with Bird following Pixar’s The Incredibles & Ratatouille and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.

Varese Sarabande to Release Michael Giacchino’s ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ Score
According to the film’s latest poster, Varese Sarabande will release a soundtrack album for the sci-fi adventure sequel Star Trek Into Darkness. The movie’s music is composed by Michael Giacchino who has previously scored the 2009 original film, as well as every other feature directed by J.J. Abrams. The soundtrack is expected to be released around the film’s release in May. Check back on this site for the full album details. Star Trek Into Darkness stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Benedict Cumberbatch and Peter Weller. The movie follows the Enterprise crew as they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization that has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for. The sequel will be released on May 17, 2013 by Paramount Pictures.
Michael Giacchino to Score ‘Jupiter Ascending’
Michael Giacchino is set to reunite with Lana and Andy Wachowski on their upcoming sci-fi action tentpole Jupiter Ascending. The film stars Channing Tatum, Mila Kunis, Eddie Redmayne, Douglas Booth, Tuppence Middleton and Sean Bean. The movie is set in a time where humans are at the bottom of the evolutionary ladder and are watched by higher forms of life and follows a woman who has been targeted for assassination by the Queen of the Universe. The Wachowskis are writing, producing and directing the Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures production, which is set to shoot this spring. Giacchino has previously collaborated with the Wachowskis on the 2008 feature Speed Racer.
Live to Projection Concerts of Michael Giacchino’s ‘Star Trek’ Score Announced
The 21st Century Symphony Orchestra has announced a concert featuring the world premiere performance of Academy Award-winning composer Michael Giacchino‘s original score for J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek performed live to projection. The orchestra has collaborated with Giacchino and Paramount Pictures to arrange the score from the 2009 hit sci-fi film for a concert version performed live to picture. The music will be performed by the 21st Century Symphony Orchestra and the 21st Century Choir under the baton of Ludwig Wicki. Giacchino is expected to attend the concerts in person. The concerts will be held on three consecutive nights on April 12, 13 and 14, 2013 at the KKL Luzern Concert Hall in Lucerne, Switzerland. The orchestra and Wicki have previously worked together with composer Howard Shore for live to projection concerts of the scores for The Lord of the Rings trilogy, which world premiered in Lucerne back in 2008, 2009 and 2010.
Michael Giacchino Wins Saturn Award for ‘Super 8’
Michael Giacchino was honored with a Saturn Award tonight at the 38th annual Saturn Awards, presented by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films. The composer won the award in the Best Music category for his score for last year’s Super 8, which also received awards for director J.J. Abrams and actor Joel Courtney in the Best Performance by a Younger Actor category. Giacchino was also nominated for his music for Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. The other nominated composers were Howard Shore (Hugo), Alan Silvestri (Captain America: The First Avenger) and John Williams (The Adventures of Tintin, War Horse). SoundWorks Collection has published a new video profile on the sound and music of Walt Disney Pictures’ epic fantasy film John Carter directed by Andrew Stanton. The 10-minute video featuring interviews with supervising sound editor Jonathan Null and composer Michael Giacchino and also shows footage from the score’s recording sessions. A couple of themes from the score were recently performed in a world premiere concert event entitled The Music of Michael Giacchino – Stories of Island, Balloons and Space in Lucerne, Switzerland.

Opening in most theaters is the fantasy epic John Carter directed by Andrew Stanton and starring Taylor Kitsch, Willem Dafoe, Lynn Collins, Thomas Haden Church, Samantha Morton, Dominic West, Mark Strong, James Purefoy and Bryan Cranston. The film’s music is composed by Michael Giacchino. Walt Disney Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. Also opening wide is the family comedy A Thousand Words directed by Brian Robbins and starring Eddie Murphy, Ariel Winter, Kerry Washington and Allison Janney. John Debney who previously worked with the director on the sci-fi comedy Meet Dave has written the score for the movie. No soundtrack album has been announced. Walt Disney Records will release the official soundtrack album for the epic sci-fi adventure John Carter. The album includes the original score from the movie written by Academy Award-winning composer Michael Giacchino. The soundtrack will be released on March 6, 2012 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Check out audio clips from the album below. Michael Giacchino’s ‘Super 8’ Soundtrack in Concert
Last weekend, Michael Giacchino conducted a concert on the roof of J.J. Abrams’ production company Bad Robot. The scores performed include the Bad Robots productions Super 8, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, Star Trek and the TV show Lost. David Poland from Movie City News has published a video of the performance of the Super 8 suite from the concert and also interviewed the composer about his work on the film. Notable Omissions among the Academy Awards’ Original Score Finalists
As announced last Thursday, 97 movies are eligible for nominations in the Original Score category for the 84th Academy Awards. Not included were a couple of scores that have been considered possible contenders. The two most notable omissions from the Academy’s finalists list are Drive and My Week with Marilyn, which both were disqualified for different reasons.
The score for Nicolas Winding-Refn’s Drive composed by Cliff Martinez has received the Boston Society of Film Critics‘ Best Use of Music in Film prize (tied with Ludovic Bource’s score for The Artist), the runner-up award by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, as well as nominations from the Broadcast Film Critics Association and the Washington DC Area and London Critics Film Circle. As reported in Variety, the score was disqualified by the Academy because a number of songs were playing at key dramatic points during the film instead of the score, and two other composers were listed on the official studio cue sheet in addition to Martinez.
