Piano Spheres, the solo piano series whose mission is committed to introduce major new works for the piano, has announced this year’s opening concert. On November 12, Grammy-winning pianist Gloria Cheng will perform the world premieres of several original piano works by major film composers for the Opening Night program, entitled Montage. Academy Award-winning composers John Williams (Star Wars, Schindler’s List), Michael Giacchino (Up, Star Trek) and Randy Newman (Toy Story, Monsters, Inc.) who composed a piece in homage to Alfred, Emil and Lionel Newman, are featured on the program, as well as Bruce Broughton (Silverado) and Don Davis (The Matrix). The concert will also feature the U.S. premiere of Alexandre Desplat‘s Trois Études (originally written for pianist Lang Lang).

Michael Giacchino to Score Shawn Levy’s ‘This Is Where I Leave You’
Michael Giacchino has signed on to score the upcoming comedy This Is Where I Leave You. The film is directed by Shawn Levy and stars Jason Bateman, Tina Fey, Rose Byrne, Jane Fonda, Kathryn Hahn, Timothy Olyphant, Ben Schwartz, Corey Stoll, Dax Shepard, Connie Britton and Abigail Spencer. The movie is based on a novel by Jonathan Tropper (Banshee) and follows a dysfunctional and idiosyncratic family in which the father’s death forces four grown siblings to spend a week together under the same roof for the first time in a decade. Tropper also has written the screenplay and Levy is producing the project with Paula Weinstein (The Perfect Storm, Analyze This, Blood Diamond). Most of Levy’s previous features, including Cheaper by the Dozen, Date Night and The Pink Panther featured music by composer Christophe Beck. The director has also collaborated with Danny Elfman on Real Steel and Alan Silvestri on the A Night at the Museum films.
‘Toy Story of Terror’ Soundtrack Details
Walt Disney Records will release a soundtrack album for the ABC Halloween special Toy Story of Terror. The album features the animated short’s original score composed by Michael Giacchino who has previously scored Pixar’s The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Up and Cars 2, as well as numerous shorts. The soundtrack will be released digitally on October 15, 2013 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Toy Story of Terror is directed by Angus MacLane and features the voices of Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Don Rickles, Wallace Shawn, Timothy Dalton, Kristen Schaal and Carl Weathers. The short follows the Toy Story gang on a trip to a roadside motel. The Halloween special is set to premiere on October 16 on ABC.
‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ Live to Projection Concert Announced
Royal Albert Hall will host the UK premiere of Star Trek Into Darkness – Live in Concert featuring the performance of Academy Award-winning composer Michael Giacchino‘s original score for J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness performed live to projection. The music will be performed by the 21st Century Symphony Orchestra and Chorus under the baton of Ludwig Wicki. The world premiere of Star Trek Into Darkness – Live in Concert is set to take place a few days prior to the UK premiere at the KKL Luzern Concert Hall in Lucerne, Switzerland. Michael Giacchino to Score Pixar’s ‘Toy Story of Terror’
Michael Giacchino has been hired to score Disney/Pixar’s upcoming Halloween TV special Toy Story of Terror. The animated short is directed by Angus MacLane (Small Fry) and follows the Toy Story gang on a trip to a roadside motel. When one of the toys goes missing, the others find themselves caught up in a mysterious sequence of events. The special features the voice talent from the Toy Story features, including Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Don Rickles, Wallace Shawn, Timothy Dalton, Kristen Schaal and Carl Weathers. Galyn Susman (Hawaiian Vacation) is producing the project. Giacchino has previously scored the features The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Up and Cars 2, as well as the shorts One Man Band, Lifted, Partly Cloudy, Day & Night and La luna for Pixar Animation Studios.

The film’s music is composed by Abrams’ regular musical collaborator Michael Giacchino (Up, Lost). A soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music is now available digitally from Varese Sarabande and will be released on CD next week. Opening in limited release is the indie comedy drama Frances Ha co-written and directed by Noah Baumbach and starring Greta Gerwig, Mickey Sumner, Adam Driver and Michael Zegen. ABKCO Records will release a soundtrack album featuring four tracks from classic film scores by composer Georges Delerue, Paul McCartney’s Blue Sway, David Bowie’s Modern Love, T. Rex’s Chrome Sitar and more next week. Also included is a track by Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips who scored Baumbach’s The Squid and the Whale. Michael Giacchino to Score ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’
Michael Giacchino confirmed on Twitter that he will be scoring the upcoming sci-fi sequel Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. The film is directed by Matt Reeves who previously collaborated with the composer on Let Me In and Cloverfield. The sequel stars Andy Serkis, Jason Clarke, Kodi-Smit McPhee, Keri Russell and Gary Oldman. While no specific plot details have been revealed yet, the film is said to be set 15 years after the events of the 2011 film and follows Caesar who is trying to maintain dominance over his kingdom, and the scientists struggling to survive in San Francisco. Peter Chernin & Dylan Clarke (Oblivion, The Heat) and screenwrites Amanda Silver & Rick Jaffa are producing the project. The original 2011 film featured a score by Patrick Doyle.
Varèse Sarabande’s 35th Anniversary Celebration
On Saturday night, film music label Varèse Sarabande hosted their 35th Anniversary Concert Gala at the Warner Grand Theatre in San Pedro, California. The sold out concert was hosted and produced by Varese Sarabande’s Robert Townson and performed by the Golden State Pops Orchestra (GSPO) and Chorale. The event featured a special guest performance by Academy Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer who performed a suite from Driving Miss Daisy on piano featuring Incubus guitarist Mike Einziger and violinist Ann Marie Calhoun. The suite also included a preview from the composer’s score for the upcoming Superman reboot Man of Steel. Additionally, Academy Award-winner Michael Giacchino (Up) conducted the world premiere of a special suite from his score for Star Trek Into Darkness and John Powell (The Bourne Trilogy) conducted a suite from his Oscar-nominated score for Dreamworks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon.

Varese Sarabande has announced the details of the soundtrack album for the sci-fi sequel Star Trek Into Darkness. The album features the film’s original score composed by Michael Giacchino. The soundtrack will be released physically on May 28, 2013 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. A digital release is expected the week of the film’s opening in the U.S. Audio clips are available after the jump. Star Trek Into Darkness is directed by J.J. Abrams and stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Benedict Cumberbatch and Peter Weller.
