Mark Mancina is set to return to compose the score for Disney’s Planes: Fire & Rescue. The sequel to this summer’s animated feature Planes is directed by Bobs Gannaway (Secret of the Wings, Stitch! The Movie) and features a crew of elite firefighting aircraft devoted to protecting historic Piston Peak National Park from a raging wildfire. Dane Cook will once again be voicing the film’s main character of Dusty. He is joined by Julie Bowen who will appear as the voice of the new character Lil’ Dipper. The full voice cast has yet to be announced. Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter is executive producing the DisneyToon Studios production. Four new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the animated feature Planes directed by Klay Hall and featuring a voice cast including Dane Cook, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Cedric the Entertainer, Val Kilmer, John Cleese, Stacy Keach, Brad Garrett and Teri Hatcher. The film’s original music is composed by Mark Mancina (Tarzan, Speed Twister). Mark Mancina is currently scoring Disney’s upcoming animated feature Planes. Mark Mancina to Score ‘Penthouse North’
Mark Mancina has signed on to score the upcoming thriller Penthouse North. The film directed by Joseph Ruben and starring Michael Keaton and Michelle Monaghan follows a photojournalist blinded in Iraq who falls prey to a criminal who believes there are stolen diamonds hidden in her apartment. David Loughery (Lakeview Terrace, Passenger 57) has written the screenplay and is also producing the project with Ruben, Jeff Sackman (American Psycho) and Michael Baker. Mancina has previously collaborated with director Ruben on the 1998 drama Return to Paradise and the 1995 action thriller Money Train. Ruben has also worked with such A-List composers as James Horner (The Forgotten), Jerry Goldsmith (Sleeping with the Enemy) and Elmer Bernstein (The Good Son) throughout his career.
Expanded ‘Speed’ Soundtrack by Mark Mancina Released
La-La Land Records has released a new soundtrack edition for the 1994 action hit film Speed directed by Jan De Bont and starring Keanu Reeves, Sandra Bullock and Dennis Hopper. The album includes the remastered and expanded score composed by Mark Mancina (Training Day, Con Air). The release presents its tracks in film order and includes the end titles song Speed performed by Billy Idol. ‘Money Train’ Soundtrack released
La-La Land Records has released a limited edition soundtrack for the 1995 action thriller Money Train. The album features more than 40 minutes from Mark Mancina’s original score from the film. Money Train is directed by Joseph Ruben and stars Wesley Snipes, Woody Harrelson and Jennifer Lopez. In the movie, a vengeful New York transit cop decides to steal a trainload of subway fares.
John Swihart scoring ‘Flypaper’
Film Music Reporter has learned that John Swihart is the new composer of the crime comedy Flypaper directed by Rob Minkoff and starring Patrick Dempsey, Ashley Judd and Jeffrey Tambor. He has taken over scoring duties from Mark Mancina, who was originally attached to score the movie as reported last month. The film will have its premiere on January 28 at the Sundance Film Festival.

Film Music Reporter has learned that the upcoming crime comedy Flypaper will feature a score by composer Mark Mancina. The film centers around a man who is caught in the middle of two simultaneous robberies at the same bank and desperately tries to protect the teller with whom he’s secretly in love. The film is directed by Rob Minkoff, who previously worked with Mancina on the Disney fantasy The Haunted Mansion starring Eddie Murphy. The director also has worked with such composers as Hans Zimmer (The Lion King), Alan Silvestri (Stuart Little 1 & 2) and David Buckley (The Forbidden Kingdom). Flypaper stars Patrick Dempsey, Ashley Judd, Jeffrey Tambor, Mekhi Phifer and Tim Blake Nelson.
