ASCAP has announced the winners of the 2021 ASCAP Screen Music Awards, recognizing its top film, television and video game composers. The accolades will take place under the hashtag #ASCAPAwards on ASCAP’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram @ASCAP and @ASCAPScreen as part of a social media celebration through Thursday, May 20. The ASCAP Composers’ Choice Awards, voted on exclusively by the ASCAP composer and songwriter community, are presented to Trent Reznor & Jon Batiste for Film Score of the Year for Pixar’s Soul; to Raphael Saadiq for Television Score of the Year for HBO’s Lovecraft Country; to Steven Price for Documentary Score of the Year for David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet; to Philip Glass & Paul Leonard-Morgan for Television Theme of the Year for Amazon’s Tales from a Loop; and to Gustavo Santaolalla for Video Game Score of the Year for his work on The Last of Us Part II. Karibanna Content has released a soundtrack album for the documentary Free Color. The album features the film’s original music composed by Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra and Los Angeles Philharmonic music director Gustavo Dudamel (The Liberator), Nascuy Linares (Embrace of the Serpent, Luxor), Devendra Banhart (Joshy, Arkansas), Alvaro Paiva Bimbo and Sebastián Arvelo. Free Color is directed by Alberto Arvelo and centers on late Carlos Cruz-Diez, one of the most prominent and influential Kinetic-Optic artists of our time. Premiering in the U.S. tonight is the British mini-series Death and Nightingales adapted and directed by Allan Cubitt and starring Matthew Rhys, Jamie Dornan and Ann Skelly. The show’s original music is composed by David Holmes (Ocean’s 11, Out of Sight, Haywire, Killing Eve, Logan Lucky, Ordinary Love, Analyze That) and Gerry Diver (Pixie). The 3-part drama, which tells a story of love, betrayal and revenge set in the haunting countryside of Northern Ireland in 1885, premiered in the UK in 2018 on BBC Two (and in Ireland on RTÉ One) and is making its U.S. debut on Starz.
Also premiering tonight is the Starz original series Run the World created by Leigh Davenport and starring Bresha Webb, Amber Stevens West, Corbin Reid, Tonya Pinkins, Andrea Bordeaux, Stephen Bishop, Tosin Morohunfola, Erika Alexander, Jay Walker and Nick Sagar. Robert Glasper (The Photograph, Miles Ahead) & Derrick Hodge are composing the show’s original music. Five new movies are opening in theaters nationwide this week:
Opening in most theaters is the Saw reboot Spiral directed by Darren Lynn Bousman and starring Chris Rock, Samuel L. Jackson, Max Minghella and Marisol Nichols. The film’s original score is composed by Charlie Clouser (Resident Evil: Extinction, Numbers, Death Sentence) who has written the music for all previous Saw movies. Lakeshore Records will release a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score next Friday, May 21. Click here for the full album details. Also opening wide is the thriller Those Who Wish Me Dead directed by Taylor Sheridan and starring Angelina Jolie, Nicholas Hoult, Finn Little, Medina Senghore, Tyler Perry, Aiden Gillen, Jake Weber and Jon Bernthal. Brian Tyler (Iron Man 3, Furious 7, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Crazy Rich Asians, Yellowstone, Thor: The Dark World) has composed the film’s original music. Back Lot Music has released a soundtrack album for the British comedy drama Limbo. The album features the film’s original music composed by Hutch Demouilpied (The Levelling). Also included is a track by Khyam Allami. The soundtrack is now available to stream/download here, where you can also check out audio clips. Limbo is written and directed by Ben Sharrock and stars Amir El-Masry, Vikash Bhai, Kwabena Ansah Sidse Babett Knudsen, Ola Orebiyi and Kais Nashif.
