Universal Music has announced a soundtrack release for the upcoming sci-fi comedy Paul directed by Greg Mottola and starring Simon Pegg, Sigourney Weaver, Kristen Wiig, Jane Lynch, Jason Bateman, Bill Hader and Seth Rogen as the voice of Paul. The soundtrack album includes songs featured in the movie from such artists as The Only Ones, Bill Dee Riley, Todd Rundgren, King Harvest, Marvin Gaye, Max Romeo and the B 52’s. The album also includes 12 tracks from composer David Arnold who composed the original score for the movie as reported here. The soundtrack will be released in the UK on February 21 and a domestic release is expected closer to the US release date of the movie on March 18, 2011.

Michael Giacchino on ‘Good Morning America’

This morning, ABC’s Good Morning America featured a report on Michael Giacchino in their Countdown to the Oscars series. The composer talks about his working methods, what joining the Academy meant to him and his efforts on mentoring students in Los Angeles. Giacchino has a busy year ahead of him with six movies scheduled for release this year and Andrew Stanton’s John Carter of Mars release date recently being moved forward from a Summer to a March, 2012 release.

Ramin Djawadi taking over ‘Game of Thrones’

TV Squad reports that Ramin Djawadi has taken over scoring duties on the upcoming HBO series Game of Thrones. He is replacing composer Stephen Warbeck who was originally scoring the project as reported last year. The fantasy drama based on George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire stars Sean Bean, Mark Addy, Peter Dinklage and Lena Headey and will have its premiere on April 17, 2011 on HBO. Film Music Reporter has learned that Alex Wurman is the composer of the upcoming romantic comedy Something Borrowed. The movie centers around a Manhattan attorney who becomes involved with her best friend’s fiance following her 30th birthday. The film is an adaptation of the first in a series of novels from Emily Giffin and is directed by Luke Greenfield who has previously worked with composers Paul Haslinger on The Girl Next Door and Teddy Castellucci on The Animal. ‘Rango’ Soundtrack album announced

Anti Records has announced a soundtrack album for Gore Verbinski’s upcoming animated film Rango. The album includes the original score by Hans Zimmer, as well as songs by Los Lobos. John Barry dies aged 77

Various websites including the BBC reported this morning that John Barry has passed away at age 77 of a heart attack. Barry was born on November 3, 1933 in York, England and is considered one of the most accomplished and successful composers in film music history. Most famous for scoring 11 films in the James Bond series, among them Goldfinger and You Only Live Twice, Barry has been an active film composers in over four decades and scored close to a 100 feature films. He won five Academy Awards for such movies as Born Free, The Lion in Winter, Out of Africa and Dances With Wolves. His last film score for Michael Apted’s Enigma was released in 2001, after which the composer retired from film composing.
Alberto Iglesias scoring ‘The Monk’

Alberto Iglesias has two new projects coming out this year. He is currently finishing up the score for the French/Spanish co-production The Monk. The thriller is directed by German director Dominik Moll (Lemming) and stars Vincent Cassel and Geraldine Chaplin. The film is produced by Alvaro Longoria, who produced Steven Soderbergh’s Che movies which featured music by Iglesias. The Monk is an adaptation of the classic 1796 Gothic novel by Mathew Gregory Lewis and centers around Capucin Ambrosio, a pious, well-respected monk in Spain and his violent downfall. Rolfe Kent to score ‘Young Adult’

Jason Reitman revealed at the recent Power of Story – The Big Picture Panel at this year’s Sundance Film Festival (which included composer Thomas Newman) that he is about to reunite with composer Rolfe Kent on his new comedy drama Young Adult. The film marks the Reitman’s fourth feature directing effort. Kent previously wrote the score for the director’s Thank You For Smoking! and Up in the Air. Young Adult is scripted by Diablo Cody who worked with Reitman on 2007’s hit indie comedy drama Juno. Two new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:
The Rite directed by Mikael Hafstrom and starring Anthony Hopkins, Colin O’Donoghue and Alice Braga features music by Alex Heffes. A soundtrack album has been released digitally on Silva Screen Records and will be available as a physical CD in February. Check out our previous article on the announcement.
Also coming out is Simon West’s The Mechanic starring Jason Statham and Ben Foster. The film is scored by Mark Isham. A soundtrack has been released in three different versions on Isham’ own label MIM Records. The Assassin’s Edition is a six track EP of selections from the score (visit Amazon or iTunes to download and listen to clips from the album).
