Three new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:

Opening in most theaters is the comedy The Three Stooges directed by Bobby and Peter Farrelly and starring Chris Diamantopolous, Sean Hayes and Will Sasso in the title roles, alongside Sofia Vergara, Jane Lynch, Larry David, Jennifer Hudson, Craig Bierko and Carly Craig. John Debney has composed the film’s original score. No soundtrack album has been announced yet, but check out our previous news article for a video from the orchestral recording sessions of the score. Also opening wide is the horror thriller The Cabin in the Woods written by Joss Whedon, directed by Drew Goddard and starring Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchison, Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford. The film’s music is written by David Julyan (Memento, The Prestige). Varese Sarabande has announced a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, which is set for a release on CD on May 1, 2012. John Debney to Score ‘Hatfields & McCoys’

John Debney has announced on his official Facebook fan page that he will be scoring the upcoming period drama mini-series Hatfields & McCoys. The three-parter directed by Kevin Reynolds (Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Waterworld) stars Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton as two lose friends and comrades during the Civil War who return to their neighboring homes – Hatfield in West Virginia, McCoy just across the Tug River border in Kentucky – to increasing tensions, misunderstandings and resentments that soon exploded into all-out warfare between the two families. Tom Berenger, Powers Boothe and Mare Winningham are co-starring. Leslie Greif (Walker, Texas Ranger) is producing and Ted Mann (Deadwood) & Ron Parker (Broken Trail) have written the script for the Thinkfactory Media production.

John Debney to Score ‘I, Alex Cross’

John Debney has announced on his official Facebook fan page that he will be scoring the thriller I, Alex Cross. The film is directed by Rob Cohen (The Fast and the Furious, xXx) and stars Tyler Perry as James Patterson’s iconic character Alex Cross. Matthew Fox, Edward Burns, Rachel Nichols and Jean Reno are co-starring. The Alex Cross character has previously appeared in the 1997 film Kiss the Girls (scored by Mark Isham) and 2001’s Along Came a Spider (with music by Jerry Goldsmith), both times played by Morgan Freeman. In I, Alex Cross, the character is retired from the FBI and drawn back to find a killer, only to learn it may be the same man responsible for the murder of his wife twelve years ago.

John Debney to Score ‘The Three Stooges’

John Debney has been hired to score the upcoming slapstick comedy The Three Stooges. The film based on the mid-20th century comedy shorts is directed by Bobby and Peter Farrelly (There’s Something About Mary, Dumb and Dumber). The movie stars Chris Diamantopolous as Moe Howard, Sean Hayes as Larry Fine and Will Sasso as Curly Howard. Sofia Vergara, Jane Lynch, Larry David, Jennifer Hudson, Craig Bierko and Carly Craig are co-starring. Mike Cerrone (Me, Myself and Irene) co-wrote the screenplay with the Farrelly Brothers who are also producing with Bradley Thomas and Charles B. Wessler. The Three Stooges takes place when the trio are dumped out as newborns at the door of an orphanage and the story follows them into adulthood. According to an interview with Peter Farrelly on EW.com, the film is structured in three acts, each a stand-alone story like the original episodes, but loosely connected.
