Film Music Reporter has learned that Paul Cantelon has recently completed writing the music for the upcoming drama The Music Never Stopped. The films stars Julia Ormond, J.K. Simmons, Tammy Blanchard and Mia Maestro and marks the feature directorial debut for Jim Kohlberg. The movie tells the tale of a father who struggles to bond with his estranged son Gabriel, after Gabriel suffers from a brain tumor that prevents him from forming new memories. Film Music Reporter has learned that the upcoming crime comedy Flypaper will feature a score by composer Mark Mancina. The film centers around a man who is caught in the middle of two simultaneous robberies at the same bank and desperately tries to protect the teller with whom he’s secretly in love. The film is directed by Rob Minkoff, who previously worked with Mancina on the Disney fantasy The Haunted Mansion starring Eddie Murphy. The director also has worked with such composers as Hans Zimmer (The Lion King), Alan Silvestri (Stuart Little 1 & 2) and David Buckley (The Forbidden Kingdom). ‘Black Swan’ and ‘True Grit’ scores disqualified from Oscar consideration

According to Variety, the scores for Black Swan by composer Clint Mansell and True Grit by Carter Burwell have been disqualified from Oscar consideration by the Academy music branch. Both scores were deemed ineligible because they are “diluted by the use of tracked themes or other pre-existing music”. The Black Swan score was heavily adapted by Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake” and much of the True Grit score was based on 19th century hymns.
Also disqualified are the scores for The Fighter composed by Michael Brook and The Kids Are All Right by Carter Burwell, because they are being considered “diminished in impact by the predominant use of songs”. Alexandre Desplat’s score for The King’s Speech, which has been discussed as being potentially disqualified for its use of classical music in some key scenes was ruled eligible for Oscar consideration by the music branch committee. Varese Sarabande Records has announced a soundtrack album for the upcoming 3D thriller Sanctum produced by James Cameron. In the movie, a group of teenagers get ready for their high school prom as several intersecting stories unfold as the big dance approaches. Relativity Music Group has released a soundtrack album for the comedy biopic Casino Jack. The movie directed by George Hickenlooper stars Kevin Spacey, Barry Pepper, Kelly Preston and Jon Lovitz. In the movie, a hot shot Washington DC lobbyist and his protégé go down hard as their schemes to peddle influence lead to corruption and murder. The jazzy score for the film was written by Jonathan Goldsmith. The soundtrack album features 25 tracks from the Goldsmith’s score for a running time of around 37 minutes. Varese Sarabande Records has announced the details of the soundtrack release for the upcoming drama The Way Back directed by Peter Weir. The album will include 14 tracks of Burkhard Dallwitz’ original score. Dallwitz previously scored The Truman Show for the director. The Way Back tells the fact-based story centered on soldiers who escaped from a Siberian gulag in 1940. The movie stars Colin Farrell, Jim Sturgess, Saoirse Ronan and Ed Harris. According to the movie’s trailer, Nico Muhly is composing the music for the upcoming thriller Limitless. The movie, which was originally entitled The Dark Fields is directed by Neil Burger and stars Bradley Cooper, Abbie Cornish, Robert De Niro and Anna Friel. In the film, a copywriter discovers a top-secret drug which bestows him with super human abilities. Director Burger previously worked with composers Philip Glass on The Illusionist and Rolfe Kent on The Lucky Ones. Muhly himself worked with Glass on such scores as The Hours, Notes on a Scandal and Cassandra’s Dream, possibly explaining his involvement in the movie. Limitless marks Muhly’s first big feature assignment since the Academy Award-nominated 2008 drama The Reader starring Kate Winslet. Read the rest of this entry »
