Two new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:

The first wide release of the week is the 3D fantasy film Wrath of the Titans directed by Jonathan Liebesman and starring Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, Danny Huston, Edgar Ramirez, Rosamund Pike and Bill Nighy. The sequel to the 2010 film Clash of the Titans is scored by Javier Navarrete (Pan’s Labyrinth). Also opening wide is the family fantasy comedy Mirror Mirror directed by Tarsem Singh and starring Lily Collins as Snow White, Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen, as well as Armie Hammer, Sean Bean and Nathan Lane. Eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken has composed the music for the film. Relativity Music Group has released a soundtrack album featuring the score, as well as the original song I Believe in Love performed by Lily Collins. Aaron Zigman has been tapped to score the upcoming dance movie Step Up Revolution. The fourth movie in the Step Up series is directed by music video/commercials director Scott Speer and stars Kathryn McCormick, Ryan Guzman and Stephen Boss. The film follows the daughter of a wealthy businessman who arrives in Miami with aspirations of becoming a professional dancer, but soon falls in love with a young man who leads a dance crew in elaborate, cutting-edge flash mobs. Adam Shankman (Hairspray) is producing the film with Jennifer Gibgot (17 Again), Erik Feig (I Know What You Did Last Summer) and Patrick Wachsberger (Mr. & Mrs. Smith). Jon Chu who helmed the previous two films is executive producing. Zigman has previously scored the original Step Up film in 2006, as well as the 2008 sequel Step Up 2: The Streets, while Bear McCreary scored the third installment Step Up 3D in 2010. Rob Simonsen has been hired to score the upcoming indie comedy Imogene. The film is directed by Shari Springer Sperman and Robert Pulcini (American Splendor) and stars Kristen Wiig as a New York playwright who stages a fake suicide attempt to win back her ex-boyfriend, only to end up being forced into the custody of her gambling-addict mother. Annette Benning, Darren Criss, Natasha Lyonne, June Diane Raphae and Matt Dillon are co-starring.  Michelle Morgan has written the screenplay and Alix Madigan (Winter’s Bone), Celine Rattray (The Kids Are All Right) and Trudie Style are producing the Anonymous Content and Maven Pictures production. The details of the soundtrack album for the upcoming thriller The Cold Light of Day have been revealed. The album features the original score from the movie composed by Spanish composer Lucas Vidal. The soundtrack has just been released digitally in the UK. UPDATE (August 2012): The soundtrack is now also available to download in the US on Amazon. The Cold Light of Day directed by Mabrouk El Mechri and starring Henry Cavill, Bruce Willis and Sigourney Weaver marks Vidal’s second high profile project to be released overseas within weeks of each other following James McTeigue’s The Raven starring John Cusack. The thriller about a man whose family is kidnapped while on vacation in Spain opens in the UK and several other international markets in April. A release in the US is scheduled for September 7, 2012. Mark Isham confirmed in a recent interview with BuzzFocus.com that he is currently working on the music for the upcoming sci-fi romance Upside Down. The film directed by Juan Diego Solanas and starring Kirsten Dunst and Jim Sturgess centers on a a man searching an alternate universe for a long-lost love from his youth. Jayne Heitmeyer, Larry Day and Holly O’Brien are co-starring in the co-production of Studio 37, Onyx Films and Transfilm. Claude Léger (Grey Owl), Dimitri Rassam, Alexis Vonarb & Aton Soumache (Renaissance) and Jonathan Vanger are producing the romantic drama. No word yet on if any of the score by Benoit Charest who has previously been announced as the composer of the project will remain in the film. Read the rest of this entry »

Last night, James Horner attended the world premiere of James Cameron’s Titanic 3D at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Before the movie started, the composer conducted an orchestral 20-minute suite from his Academy Award-winning score from the film. Hollywood Records and Marvel Music have announced the details of the soundtrack release for the superhero film The Avengers. The album features 14 songs from and inspired by the film, including Soundgarden’s end credits song Live to Rise. Also included are tracks by Shinedown, Rise Against, Papa Roach, Black Veil Brides, Scott Weiland, Bush, Evanescence and Cherri Bomb. The soundtrack will be released on May 1, 2012 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Audio clips will be added to this article within the next couple of weeks. A separate soundtrack album featuring the film’s original score composed by Alan Silvestri will also be released on the same day. Check back on this page for the details of the score album. Jim Dooley revealed at the film composer panel Behind the Music: Composing for WonderCon’s Favorite Projects at the WonderCon 2012 earlier this month that he will be scoring the upcoming TV drama Hannibal. The series is created and executive produced by Bryan Fuller who previously worked with the composer on the critically acclaimed show Pushing Daisies, for which Dooley has received an Emmy Award. The Hannibal TV show is based on the iconic literary and film character Hannnibal Lector created by Thomas Harris and centers on the character’s budding relationship with FBI agent Will Graham. Hugh Dancy has been cast as Graham who was played by Edward Norton in 2002’s Red Dragon. No word yet on who will portray the title character. Martha De Laurentiis who produced the film versions of Hannibal, Red Dragon and Hannibal Rising is an executive producer on the project. Read the rest of this entry »

La-La Land Records has announced the world premiere soundtrack release of the remastered and expanded original score to the 1991 adventure/fantasy epic Hook directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Dustin Hoffman, Robin Williams and Julia Roberts. The 2-CD release features more than 65 minutes of unreleased music composed by Spielberg’s regular musical collaborator John Williams and contains more than 140 minutes of music in total, including bonus alternate and unused cues. The album assembly was supervised by John Williams and the completed project approved by both Williams and Steven Spielberg. Sister Bliss has recently scored the upcoming indie drama Knife Fight. The movie is written and directed by Bill Guttentag who has won two Academy Awards for two of his short documentaries, most recently the 9/11-centric Twin Towers in 2003. The film stars Rob Lowe as a maverick political strategist who is struggling to keep his wayward clients, including a philandering Kentucky governor and a California senator being blackmailed – in office and out of the scandal sheets. Julie Bowen, Eric McCormack, Jennifer Morrison, Jaime Chung, Saffron Burrows and Carrie-Anne Moss are co-starring. Guttentag co-wrote the script with political consultant Bill Lehane, best known as a White Hous advisor to Bill Clinton. Guerrino De Luca, Catherine Davila and Daniel Davila (Harrison Montgomery are the producers of the project. Sister Bliss is best known for her work with Rollo Armstrong as part of the electronica band Faithless. Knife Fight marks her first major solo film scoring assignment. The movie is set to debut at the Tribeca Film Festival next month. No word yet on a release date of the film.
