Searchlight Pictures has revealed more details about the music for Tony Gilory’s upcoming drama Behemoth!. The movie features numerous fictional sources of music in the film, including two Peter Serian (a French horn player, played by Hank Azaria, who, in the wake of his father’s death, abandoned his classical aspirations to become a successful, albeit bitter, composer) title themes, a solo cello practice Etude, and four “invented” feature films that are being scored. As previously reported, nine composers, credited as The Behemoth! Collective, have contributed original music to the movie. They recorded their respective original scores at the Sony Pictures Scoring Stage, the Newman Scoring Stage at Fox, as well as at Los Angeles’ EastWest Studios. Henry Jackman (X-Men: First Class, Captain America: The Winter Soldier) wrote Spies Don’t Run, the first LA scoring session, which plays over the full Chicago flashback, which is supposed to be the latest in the fictional Spies Don’t action-comedy franchise. Michael Giacchino (Up, Lost) created the fictional Happy & Slappy tune that Serian wrote for a cartoon. Alan Silvestri (Back to the Future, Avengers: Endgame) wrote the scoring session for the big blockbuster movie Open World, which has a decoy title for a fictional production called Behemoth!. Brandon Roberts (Andor, Thanksgiving) wrote the theme to Look Away Jones, a piece of music Serian wrote for a fictional TV detective show from the 1980s.
Emily Bear (Moana 2, The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical) wrote the score for Seasons of Glass, a love theme for a romantic drama played in Behemoth!’s second scoring session which covers the Dallas flashback. She also co-wrote, with Tony Gilroy, a 1950s-style song, Make Mine Salty, heard at the end of the film. Michael Abels (Get Out, Us) wrote the cello practice session etudes Alex is seen practicing, James Newton Howard (The Hunger Games, The Sixth Sense) wrote Viviana Glenn’s (played by Alexa Swinton) Behemoth! score that she presents to the musicians, and wrote most of Viviana’s original music, including the requiem she plays as a young girl (co-written by Tony Gilroy) and a duet that Alex plays with Viviana at the end. Lukas Frank (East of Wall) wrote the music for Viviana’s performance in an LA club of a song called Your God Is Sleeping, as well as a cue heard at the very beginning of the film as a kind of Serian family theme. Nami Melumad (Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Thor: Love and Thunder) wrote the harp cues for Ginnie Serian (played by JoBeth Williams), which is sourced from the movie-scoring session for the fictional Tolerance Hill.
Behemoth! also stars Pedro Pascal, Olivia Wilde, Eva Victor, Kaya Ralls, Erik Griffin, Margarita Levieva & Will Arnett and will premiere this weekend at the New York Film Festival before being released in theaters on December 4 by Searchlight Pictures.
