Tree Adams has signed on to score the ABC drama pilot Nashville. The show stars Connie Briton as the 40-year-old Nashville fading superstar Rayna James whose label requires her to team up with a teen sensation, played by Hayden Panettiere, or else face the loss of her own tour and the label’s promotion of her latest record, whose sales have been underwhelming. Powers Boothe, Eric Close, Jonathan Jackson and Charles Esten are co-starring. The drama is created by Academy Award winner Callie Khouri (Thelma & Louise) who is also producing the project with R.J. Three new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:

Opening in most theaters is the comedy The Three Stooges directed by Bobby and Peter Farrelly and starring Chris Diamantopolous, Sean Hayes and Will Sasso in the title roles, alongside Sofia Vergara, Jane Lynch, Larry David, Jennifer Hudson, Craig Bierko and Carly Craig. John Debney has composed the film’s original score. No soundtrack album has been announced yet, but check out our previous news article for a video from the orchestral recording sessions of the score. Also opening wide is the horror thriller The Cabin in the Woods written by Joss Whedon, directed by Drew Goddard and starring Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchison, Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford. The film’s music is written by  David Julyan (Memento, The Prestige). Back Lot Music has released a five-track soundtrack EP for the upcoming comedy The Five-Year Engagement. The EP features one track from the film’s original score composed by Michael Andrews (Bridesmaids, Donnie Darko), as well as the songs Cucurrucucu Paloma performed by actor Chris Pratt, Crazy Love by Audra Mae, Into the Mystic by The Swell Season and When That Evening Sun Goes Down by Brett Dennen. Stephen Trask has been hired to score the upcoming biopic Lovelace. The movie starring Amanda Seyfried as adult film star Linda Lovelace is told through the production of Deep Throat, her abusive relationship with Chuck Traynor and eventual spearheading of the feminist anti-pornography movement. Peter Sarsgaard, Hank Azaria, Wes Bentley, Adam Brody, Bobby Cannavale, James Franco, Chris Noth, Robert Patrick, Eric Roberts, Chloë Sevigny, Sharon Stone and Juno Temple are co-starring in the film directed by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman. Sony Masterworks will be releasing the official soundtrack albums for two of the major summer films by 20th Century Fox. First up is the soundtrack for Ridley Scott’s sci-fi horror thriller Prometheus. The album features the original music from the film by Marc Streitenfeld (American Gangster, Robin Hood). More details are expected to be announced within the next couple of weeks. The soundtrack is scheduled for a release on June 5, 2012 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Prometheus stars Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green and Ben Foster and will be released on June 8. Read the rest of this entry »

New CNN Interview with James Horner

CNN has published a new video interview with composer James Horner about his music for James Camerson’s Titanic. The video feature includes footage from the 1997 scoring sessions for the bestselling soundtrack. Horner talks about writing the score and the hit song My Heart Will Go On, both of which earned him his first two Academy Awards. Check out the full video after the jump. Sony Classical has released a soundtrack album for the comedy drama The Trouble With Bliss. The album features the score from the film composed by Daniel Alcheh, as well four original songs performed by Greek artists Sofia Papazoglou, Vasilis Lekkas and Pantelis Thalassinos, with lyrics by songwriter Maria Papadaki. The soundtrack is now available to download on Amazon. Audio clips are available after the jump. The Trouble With Bliss adapted from the critically acclaimed novel East Fifth Bliss by Douglas Light is directed by Michael Knowles and stars Michael C. Mark Mancina has signed on to score the upcoming thriller Penthouse North. The film directed by Joseph Ruben and starring Michael Keaton and Michelle Monaghan follows a photojournalist blinded in Iraq who falls prey to a criminal who believes there are stolen diamonds hidden in her apartment. David Loughery (Lakeview Terrace, Passenger 57) has written the screenplay and is also producing the project with Ruben, Jeff Sackman (American Psycho) and Michael Baker. Mancina has previously collaborated with director Ruben on the 1998 drama Return to Paradise and the 1995 action thriller Money Train. Ruben has also worked with such A-List composers as James Horner (The Forgotten), Jerry Goldsmith (Sleeping with the Enemy) and Elmer Bernstein (The Good Son) throughout his career. Intrada Records has announced a soundtrack album for the ABC hit drama Once Upon a Time. The album features over an hour of the original score from the series by composer Mark Isham, including a 4-minute orchestral suite. The soundtrack will be released on May 1, 2012 and can be pre-ordered at Intrada’s online store. ABC Studios has previously released a digital-only four-track EP of Isham’s music from the show. Once Upon a Time created by Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz and starring Jennifer Morrison, Ginnifer Goodwin, Robert Carlyle, Lana Parrilla, Josh Dallas, Jamie Dornan and Jared Gilmore is ABC’s most successful new drama of the current TV season. Rolfe Kent is the recipient of the Richard Kirk Award for outstanding career achievement at this year’s BMI Film & Television Awards. The Emmy Award- and Golden Globe-nominated composer has previously received 13 BMI Film & Television Awards since 2002. Kent’s best known work includes his score for Alexander Payne’s Election, About Schmidt and Sideways, as well as Jason Reitman’s Thank You For Smoking and Up in the Air. He also composed the main titles for the Showtime hit drama Dexter, which earned him an Emmy nomination. Among his other credits are the hit comedies Wedding Crashers, Legally Blonde, Freaky Friday and Mean Girls. Kent most recently scored last year’s family film Mr. Popper’s Penguins and the critic favorite Young Adult. Next up for the composer is the crime comedy Gambit directed by Michael Hoffman and starring Colin Firth and Cameron Diaz. Read the rest of this entry »
