Three new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:

mamaExpected to top the weekend box office is the supernatural thriller Mama directed by Andy Muschietti and starring Jessica Chastain, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Megan Charpentier and Isabelle Nellsse. The film’s music is composed by Fernando Velazquez (The Impossible, Devil). Quartet Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score earlier this week. broken-city-soundtrackAlso opening wide is the crime thriller Broken City directed by Allen Hughes and starring Mark Wahlberg, Russell Crowe, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Kyle Chandler, Barry Pepper, Natalie Martinez, Jeffrey Wright, Justin Chambers, James Ransone and Griffin Dunne. The film’s music is composed by Atticus Ross (The Social Network, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo), Claudia Sarne and Leopold Ross who have previously scored The Book of Eli for Allen Hughes and his brother. Metropolis Music Group has released a soundtrack album featuring the movie’s score. ‘A Good Day to Die Hard’ Soundtrack Details

a-good-day-to-die-hardThe details for the soundtrack album for the upcoming action sequel A Good Day to Die Hard have been revealed. The album features the film’s original music composed by Marco Beltrami (3:10 to Yuma, Scream) who scored his second film for the franchise following 2007’s Live Free or Die Hard. The soundtrack is scheduled to be released on February 19, 2013 by Sony Classical and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Cinema Musica and Sony Music has also just published a “first listen” of the soundtrack, including two full tracks (available here), as well as audio clips from all the other tracks on the album, which can be checked out after the jump. A Good Day to Die Hard is directed by John Moore (Flight of the Phoenix, The Omen) and stars Bruce Willis & Jai Courtney and follows John McClane as he finds himself on foreign soil after traveling to Moscow to help his wayward son Jack. Carlo Siliotto Scoring ‘May in the Summer’

sundanceCarlo Siliotto has composed the score for the indie drama May in the Summer. The film is written and directed by Cherien Dabis (Amreeka) and stars herself, alongside Hiam Abbass, Bill Pullman, Alia Shawkat, Nadine Malouf, Alexander Siddig and Ritu Singh Pande. The movie follows a bride-to-be who is forced to reevaluate her life when she reunites with her family in Jordan and finds herself confronted with the aftermath of her parents’ divorce. Dabis is also producing the project with Alix Madigan-Yorkin (Winter’s Bone, Cleaner) and Chris Tricarico. Siliotto’s previous film scoring credits include The Punisher, Under the Same Moon, Fluke and Nomad: The Warrior, for which he received a Golden Globe nomination. May in the Summer just premiered in competition at the Sundance Film Festival. No distribution deal has been announced yet.

‘Phantom’ Soundtrack Details

phantomMilan Records will release a soundtrack album for the thriller Phantom. The album features the film’s original score composed by Jeff Rona (White Squall, Chicago Hope), as well as the original song An Ocean Away performed by Rachel Fannan. The soundtrack will be released on February 26, 2013 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Phantom is written and directed by Todd Robinson (Lonely Hearts) and stars Ed Harris, David Duchovny, William Fichtner, Sean Patrick Flanery and Lance Henriksen. The movie about a Captain of a Soviet submarine who has to leave his pregnant wife for a secret mission on which he is forced to face his past in order to find redemption in the present while being challenged by a rogue KGB group. ‘Power of Story: Measure for Measure’ Sundance Panel Announced

sundanceThis year’s Sundance Film Festival will feature the composer panel Power of Story: Measure for Measure. The event will be moderated by Chris Douridas (KCRW-FM’s daily music program Morning Becomes Eclectic) and will include such participants as Academy Award-nominated composer Mark Isham who co-scored the indie drama The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete with Alicia Keys. This marks the composer’s first time attending Sundance for a film he scored. As previously reported, he is also participating in the BMI composer/director roundtable with director George Tillman Jr. Other participants of the Power of Story: Measure for Measure panel include five-time Grammy Award winner and Golden Globe-nominated composer Terence Blanchard (The 25th Hour, Inside Man, Malcolm X) whose opera on boxing legend Emile Griffith premieres in June 2013, as well as Academy Award-winning composer Jan A. P. Kaczmarek (Finding Neverland, Unfaithful) who established the Transatlantyk Poznan International Film and Music Festival and the Instytut Rozbitek in his home country Poland, which is aimed at developing new talent in the arts. John Debney to Score ‘Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt’

john-debneyJohn Debney has been hired to score the drama Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt. The film directed and co-written by Cyrus Nowrasteh is based on the bestselling novel by Anne Rice (Interview with the Vampire) about Jesus Christ at age seven as he and his family depart Egypt to return home to the war-torn Holy Land and as he grows into his religious identity. Betsy Giffen Nowrasteh has co-written the screenplay with Cyrus and Chris Columbus (Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire) is producing the project through his 1492 Pictures company with Michael Barnathan & Mark Radcliffe (Harry Potter series, Night at the Museum). ‘Identity Thief’ Soundtrack Announced

identity-thiefLa-La Land Records will release the official soundtrack album for Seth Gordon’s new crime comedy Identity Thief. The album features the film’s score composed by Christopher Lennertz (Hop, Revolution) who previously scored the director’s previous movie Horrible Bosses. The composer reteamed with several musicians from his last score for Gordon, including Jane’s Addiction bassist Chris Chaney, Earth, Wind and Fire keyboardist and music director Myron McKinley and Beastie Boys keyboardist Money Mark. Lennertz also recorded with a full orchestra at the Warner Bros. Eastwood Scoring Stage in Los Angeles. The CD version will be released on March 5, 2013 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. ‘Safe Haven’ Soundtrack Announced

safe-havenRelativity Music Group and Republic Records have announced the details of the soundtrack for the romantic thriller Safe Haven. The soundtrack features the original tracks We Both Know written and performed by Colbie Caillat and Gavin DeGraw and The Journey by FM Radio. Also included on the release are songs by Tristan Prettyman and Gareth Dunlop, as well as a track composed by the film’s composer Deborah Lurie (9, Dear John). The soundtrack will be released on February 5, 2013 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Audio clips will be added to this article in a couple of weeks. Safe Haven based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks is directed by Lasse Hallstrom and stars Josh Duhamel, Julianne Hough, David Lyons, Cobie Smulders and Noah Lomax. The movie about a young woman who struggles to find love again after she arrives in a small North Carolina town will be released nationwide on February 14, 2013 by Relativity Media. Kevin Riepl to Score ‘Cabin Fever: Patient Zero’

kevin-rieplKevin Riepl has signed on to score Cabin Fever: Patient Zero. The reboot of the horror franchise is directed Kaare Andrews (Altitude) and stars Sean Astin, Brando Eaton, Lydia Hearst, Jillian Murray, Ryan Donowho and Mitch Ryan. The movie follows a bachelor party cruise in the Caribbean that unexpectedly runs ashore on a medical research island, where a deadly virus is unleashed. Jake Wade Wall (The Hitcher, When a Stranger Calls) has written the screenplay. Evan Astrowsky who produced Eli Roth’s original Cabin Fever movie (scored by Nathan Barr) is producing for Hypotenuse Pictures, along with Indomina Productions. Read the rest of this entry »

Expanded ‘Dave’ Score by James Newton Howard Released

daveLa-La Land Records has released a new soundtrack release for the 1993 comedy drama Dave directed by Ivan Reitman and starring Kevin Kline, Sigourney Weaver and Frank Langella. The album features the expanded and remastered score from the Warner Bros. Pictures production composed by James Newton Howard (King Kong, The Sixth Sense, The Hunger Games), including about 30 minutes of previously unreleased music and a number of alternates. The soundtrack is now available to order on the label’s website, where you can also listen to audio clips. The album is limited to 3000 copies. Read the rest of this entry »
