The line-up for this year’s The Character of Music panel at Comic-Con in San Diego has been announced. A number of composers and producers will discuss the dynamics of music in film and television. Panelists include composer Chris Bacon and producer Christopher Nelson (Bates Motel), composer Paul Haslinger and Halt and Catch Fire creator/executive producer Christopher C. Rogers and Danny Jacob and Phineas & Ferb creators/executive producers Dan Povenmire & Jeff “Swampy” Marsh. The participants will discuss their working relationship, how music plays a character in their stories and the intense process of scoring their projects. BMI Director, Film/TV Relations Anne Cecere will serve as panel moderator. The event will take place on Friday, July 25 at 2:00pm in Room 32AB of the San Diego Convention Center.

Expanded ‘The X-Files: Fight the Future’ Soundtrack Announced

La-La Land Records will release an expanded and remastered soundtrack album for the 1998 feature The X-Files: Fight the Future written by Chris Carter & Frank Spotnitz, directed by Rob Bowman and starring David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. The album features the film’s original music composed by Mark Snow (Millennium, Blue Bloods, Elementary) who also scored the complete The X-Files series. The soundtrack will be released on July 29, 2014 and will be available on the label’s official website. Three new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the animated sequel Planes: Fire & Rescue directed by Bobs Gannaway and featuring the voices of Dane Cook, Julie Bowen, Stacy Keach, Brad Garrett, Danny Mann, Teri Hatcher and Ed Harris. Mark Mancina (Tarzan, Twister, Brother Bear, Speed) who previously scored last year’s original film has composed the film’s original score. Walt Disney Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music, as well as the original song Still I Fly performed by Spencer Lee and three songs by Brad Paisley. Also opening wide is the thriller sequel The Purge: Anarchy written and directed by James DeMonaco and starring Zach Gilford, Michael Williams, Kiele Sanchez, Frank Grillo and Carmen Ejogoro. The film’s original music is composed by Nathan Whitehead who also scored last year’s original film. Back Lot Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score earlier this week. La-La Land Records to Release Brian Tyler’s ‘The Expendables 3’ Soundtrack

La-La Land Records will release a soundtrack album for the action sequel The Expendables 3. The album features the film’s original music composed by Brian Tyler (Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, Fast & Furious, Now You See Me) who previously scored the first two installments in the series. The soundtrack will be released physically on August 26, 2014 and will be available for pre-order here. The digital release is expected to come out earlier in August through Lionsgate Records, but details have yet to be confirmed. Check back on this page for more information. Marco Beltrami to Score ‘True Story’

Marco Beltrami has signed on to score the upcoming drama True Story. The film is directed by Rupert Goold and stars Jonah Hill, James Franco, Felicity Jones, Ethan Suplee and Gretchen Mol. The movie is based on journalist Michael Finkel’s memoirs about the relationship between Finkel and Christian Longo, a Most Wanted List murderer who for years lived outside the U.S. under Finkel’s name. David Kajganich (The Invasion) has written the screenplay. Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner & Jeremy Kleiner (12 Years a Slave, The Tree of Life, Killing Them Softly) are producing the Plan B Entertainment and New Regency Pictures production. Charles Bernstein Rejoins Academy Board

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that composer Charles Bernstein has rejoined the Academy’s Board of Governors after a hiatus. He joins composers Charles Fox and Arthur Hamilton as a governor for the Academy’s music branch. The Academy’s 17 branches are represented by three governors, who may serve up to three consecutive three-year terms. Terms are staggered so that each branch elects or reelects one governor each year. For the full list of elected governors, click here.
Francis Lai to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award at Ghent Film Festival

Francis Lai has been selected as the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement award at the closing-night gala of the 14th World Soundtrack Awards at the Ghent Film Fest on October 25, 2014. The composer is best known for his score for 1970’s Love Story, for which he received an Academy Award, as well as a Golden Globe and Grammy Award nomination. His other scoring credits include such titles as A Man and a Woman, Bilitis, Live for Life and Dark Eyes. Selections of the composer’s music will be performed live by the Brussels Philharmonic conducted by Dirk Brosse at the event. Among the composers that were previously honored with the award are John Barry, Marvin Hamlisch, Pino Donaggio Giorgio Moroder and Angelo Badalamenti. In addition, Jef Neve’s music for the Flemish drama series In Flanders Fields will also be performed at the World Soundtrack Awards, accompanied by footage from the show. Daniel Pemberton to Score Guy Ritchie’s ‘The Man from U.N.C.L.E.’

Daniel Pemberton has been hired to score the upcoming film adaptation of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. The film is directed by Guy Ritchie and stars Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, Alicia Vikander, Hugh Grant, Elizabeth Debicki, Luca Calvani and Jared Harris. The spy action comedy is based on the 1960 television series and tells the origin story of the first pairing of the two spies — one American, one Russian – who up on a joint mission to stop a mysterious international criminal organization, which is bent on destabilizing the fragile balance of power through the proliferation of nuclear weapons and technology. Ritchie has also written the screenplay with Lionel Wigram (Sherlock Holmes) who is producing the project with John Davis (Predator, The Firm, I, Robot, Chronicle). Pemberton’s previous scoring credits include Ridley Scott’s The Counselor, the horror thriller The Awakening, this year’s comedy Cuban Fury and the British comedy series Peep Show. Sumthing Else Music Works will release a soundtrack album for the horror thriller Cabin Fever: Patient Zero. The album features the film’s original music composed by Kevin Riepl (Silent Night, Contracted, Gears of War video game). Jeremy Zuckerman & Benjamin Wynn to Participate in PlayFest

Jeremy Zuckerman and Benjamin Wynn are participating in the PlayFest in Malaga. The third edition of the Music, Animation and Videogames Festival will feature a concert spotlighting the music of the hit animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender, which the composers scored together. Also featured on the festival program will be another concert for the animated show The Legend of Korra, which Zuckerman has been scoring since 2012. The festival, which is dedicated to one of the fastest growing industries today and will bring together leading artists, composers and companies to participate in master classes, conferences, screenings and concerts, will take place from September 11 to September 14 in Malaga.
