Three new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:

Opening in most theaters is the animated feature Strange Magic directed by Gary Rydstrom, produced by George Lucas and featuring the voices of Alan Cumming, Evan Rachel Wood, Kristin Chenoweth, Maya Rudolph, Sam Palladio, Meredith Anne Bull, Alfred Molina, Elijah Kelley, Bob Einstein and Peter Stormare. Marius de Vries (Moulin Rouge, Kick-Ass) serves as the film’s musical director and has also composed the original score. Hollywood Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the film performed by the voice cast. the-boy-next-doorAlso opening wide is the thriller The Boy Next Door directed by Rob Cohen, produced by Jason Blum and starring Jennifer Lopez, Ryan Guzman, John Corbett and Kristin Chenoweth. The film’s original music is composed by Randy Edelman who previously scored such films as Dragonheart, xXx and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor for Cohen and Nathan Barr (True Blood, The Americans). Back Lot Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the score earlier this week and Varese Sarabande will release a physical version next month. Click here for the full album details. Lisbeth Scott’s ‘Just Like Rain’ from ‘The Boy Next Door’ Released

just-like-rainLisbeth Scott has written and produced the original song Just Like Rain for Rob Cohen’s thriller The Boy Next Door. The singer/songwriter/film composer also performs the song, which is now available to download on Amazon. The track will also be featured on her solo record Bird, which is coming out on March 3 and is available for pre-order on iTunes. Check out the official music video after the jump. Scott who has previously written songs for HBO’s True Blood and the features Shutter and The Big Wedding also provides vocals on the film’s original score composed by Randy Edelman & Nathan Barr, which is now available on Varese Sarabande. Tangerine Dream’s Edgar Froese (1944 – 2015)

edgar-froeseTangerine Dream founder Edgar Froese has passed away at age 70. According to the band’s official Facebook page, the composer suddenly and unexpectedly died on January 20 from the effects of a pulmonary embolism in Vienna. Froese founded the electronic music group Tangerine Dream in 1967. In addition to producing dozens of studio albums, the band was best known for composing the score for numerous films, including 1983’s Risky Business starring Tom Cruise, William Friedkin’s Sorcerer, Mihcael Mann’s The Keep and Thief, Ridley Scott’s Legend, 1988’s Miracle Mile, Kathryn Bigelow’s Near Dark, 1984’s Firestarter and 1987’s Three O’Clock High.

Theodore Shapiro to Score Nancy Meyers’ ‘The Intern’ and Jay Roach’s ‘Trumbo’

theodore-shapiroTheodore Shapiro has been hired to score the upcoming comedy The Intern. The film is written and directed by Nancy Meyers and stars Robert De Niro, Anne Hathaway, Rene Russo, Zack Pearlman, Adam DeVine, Reid Scott, Andrew Rannells, Anders Holm, Nat Wolff, Linda Lavin and Christina Scherer. The movie centers on a 70-year-old widower who discovers that retirement isn’t all it’s cracked up to be and becomes a senior intern at an online fashion site. Meyers is also producing the film with Scott Rudin (No Country for Old Men, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Captain Phillips) and Suzanne McNeill Farwell. Read the rest of this entry »

H. Scott Salinas to Score NBC’s ‘Allegiance’

imageH. Scott Salinas is composing the music for the upcoming NBC drama Allegiance. The show is created by George Nolfi (The Adjustment Bureau) and stars Hope Davis, Scott Cohen, Gavin Stenhouse, Margarita Levieva, Morgan Spector, Kenneth Choi and Alex Peters. The series follows a young idealistic CIA analyst specializing in Russian affairs whose parents and sister are part of a dormant Russian sleeper cell that has just been reactivated. Nolfi is also executive producing the Universal Television, Keshet Media and Yes! production with Avi Nir (Homeland, Tyrant), Ron Leshem, Amit Cohen, Giyora Yahalom, Yona Wiesenthal, John Glenn (Hatfield & McCoys, Eagle Eye) and Rashad Raisani. ‘Focus’ Soundtrack Announced

The album features the songs from the film by artists including Bruno Hovart, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Sofa Surfers, Iggy & The Stooges, Junior Kimbrough, Doris & Kelley, Barbara Lewis & more. Also included is a track from the film’s original score composed by Nick Urata (Crazy, Stupid, Love, Paddington, I Love You Phillip Morris, Ruby Sparks). The soundtrack will be released on February 24, 2015 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, ‘The Fault in Our Stars’, ‘Begin Again’ and ‘Whiplash’ Honored at Guild of Music Supervisors Awards

guild-of-music-supervisorsLast night, the 5th Guild of Music Supervisors Awards were handed out at the Mack Sennett Studios in Hollywood. Dave Jordan received the honor in the Best Music Supervision in Motion Picture – Motion Picture Over 25M for his work on Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy. The film’s soundtrack release on Hollywood Records was also the year’s best-selling title. Season Kent received the award in the Motion Picture Under 25M category for her music supervision on the hit feature The Fault in Our Stars starring Shailene Woodley. In the Independent Motion Pictures Under 10M category, Matt Sullivan and Andrea von Foerster were honored for their work on Begin Again, which just received an Academy Award nomination in the Best Original Song category last week. The album features the film’s original music composed by Gary Lionelli (HBO’s Luck, The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest). The soundtrack is now available to download on Amazon. Christophe Beck to Score ‘Sisters’

The NestChristophe Beck is reteaming with director Jason Moore to score the upcoming comedy Sisters. The film stars Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Ike Barinholtz, John Leguizamo, Dianne Wiest, John Cena and James Brolin. The movie follows two disconnected sisters who are summoned home to clean out their childhood bedroom before their parents sell the house and throw one final party in order to recapture their glory days. Paula Pell (30 Rock, Saturday Night Live) has written the screenplay. Fey is also producing the project with Roach (Austin Powers, Meet the Parents, The Campaign) and John S. ‘Ex Machina’ Soundtrack Released

ex-machinaBack Lot Music will release a soundtrack album for the sci-fi thriller Ex Machina. The album features the film’s original music composed by Ben Salisbury and Portishead’s Geoff Barrow. Also included is the song Bunsen Burner by The Cuts. The soundtrack is now available digitally overseas and will be released in the U.S. on April 7.
