On Saturday, January 24, The Godfather LIVE will make its Southern California debut at the Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles. The film’s original music composed by Nino Rota for the Academy Award-winning film directed by Francis Ford Coppola and starring Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, John Cazale, Robert Duvall & Diane Keaton will performed live by the Hollywood Studio Symphony while the film is simultaneously shown in high definition on the big screen. The event will also feature appearances of special guests to be announced. Justin Freer is conducting and producing the concert. The Godfather LIVE had its world premiere last month at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

Weekly Film Music Roundup (January 16, 2015)
In addition to the nationwide expansion of Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper, three other new movies are opening across the country this week:
Opening in around 3300 theaters is the family movie Paddington written and directed by Paul King and starring Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters, Nicole Kidman, Jim Broadbent, Peter Capaldi and Ben Whishaw as the voice of Paddington. The film’s original music is composed by Nick Urata (Crazy, Stupid, Love, Focus). Decca Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the score, as well as songs from the film by James Brown, Steppenwolf and Lionel Richie. The U.S. version of the film also features the original song Shine by Pharrell Williams & Gwen Stefani, which can be checked out here.
Opening in roughly 3000 theaters is the comedy The Wedding Ringer directed by Jeremy Garelick and starring Kevin Hart, Josh Gad, Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting, Ken Howard, Cloris Leachman, Jenifer Lewis, Mimi Rogers and Olivia Thirlby. Christopher Lennertz (Ride Along, Agent Carter, Identity Thief) has composed the film’s original score. Madison Gate Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the film by such artists as The Black Eyed Peas, Boyz II Men, Otis Redding, Todd Rundgren, Hal Jeffrin and Rancid earlier this week. Antonio Sanchez Wins Critics’ Choice Movie Award for ‘Birdman’
Antonio Sanchez was honored with the Critics’ Choice Movie Award in the Best Score category for his music for Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s Birdman at tonight’s 19th Annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards ceremony in Los Angeles. The other composers nominated in the Best Score category were Alexandre Desplat for The Imitation Game, Johann Johannsson for The Theory of Everything, Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross for Gone Girl and Hans Zimmer for Interstellar.

BMI to Present Composer/Director Roundtable at 2015 Sundance Film Festival
Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) has announced the 17th annual Composer/Director Roundtable and 13th annual Snowball during the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. BMI’s roundtable entitled Music & Film: The Creative Process will take place on Tuesday, January 27 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Filmmaker Lodge (550 Main Street, 2nd Floor Park City, Utah 84060). The conversation will be moderated by Doreen Ringer Ross, Vice President, Film/TV Relations and focus on the relationship between composer and director. The participants will discuss what goes into creating a successful film score, the ingredients of an effective composer/director relationship, the Sundance Film Festival experience and more.
Cinema Audio Society (CAS) Nominations Announced
The Cinema Audio Society has announced the nominees for the 51st Annual CAS Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing. For the past couple of years, scoring mixers are being recognized alongside production, re-recording, ADR and foley mixers. In the Motion Pictures – Live Action category, the scoring mixers honored include Robert Fernandez for American Sniper (feat. music by Clint Eastwood), Gustavo Borner for Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s Birdman (music by Antonio Sanchez) and Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy (scored by Tyler Bates), Alan Meyerson for Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar (music by Hans Zimmer) and Jonathan Allen for Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken (music by Alexandre Desplat).
Johann Johannsson Wins Golden Globe for ‘The Theory of Everything’
Johann Johannsson has received his first Golden Globe Award for his score for James Marsh’s The Theory of Everything starring Eddie Redmayne & Felicity Jones. The other composers nominated in the Best Original Score category were Alexandre Desplat (The Imitation Game), Antonio Sanchez (Birdman), Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross (Gone Girl) and Hans Zimmer (Interstellar).
In the Best Original Song category, John Legend and Common won the award for the song Glory from Selma.

Top Original Film Scores & Songs of 2014
Film Music Reporter’s Top 3 Original Scores of 2014:
John Powell delivered a perfect sequel score for How to Train Your Dragon 2, developing themes and musical material introduced in the 2010 original film, while adding a number of new themes and reaching a level of sophistication in his orchestral writing that he rarely achieved before. The score, which at times even surpasses his Oscar-nominated music for the first movie, also includes our favorite and most memorable new theme of the year, receiving our favorite treatments in the standout cues Flying with Mother and Toothless Found on the soundtrack album. The soundtrack featuring Powell’s music is available on Relativity Music.
James Newton Howard reportedly worked almost a year on Disney’s Maleficent starring Angelina Jolie & Elle Fanning and the effort showed in the result of his score, which has to be considered one of the composer’s career-best scores. Written for big orchestra and choir, the music features numerous highlights, including some of the year’s best action cues and most impressive choral and orchestral writing. Weekly Film Music Roundup (January 2, 2015)
The only movie opening nationwide this weekend is the horror sequel The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death directed by Tom Harper and starring Jeremy Irvine, Helen McCrory, Phoebe Cox and Oaklee Pendergast. The film’s original music is composed by Marco Beltrami (Scream, World War Z, 3:10 to Yuma) who previously scored the first part in the series, as well as Marcus Trumpp and Brandon Roberts. Varese Sarabande has released a soundtrack album featuring the composers’ score earlier this week and a CD version is set to be released next week. Opening in New York and Los Angeles this week before expanding nationwide later this month is the crime drama A Most Violent Year written and directed by J.C. Chandor and starring Oscar Isaac, Jessica Chastain, Alessandro Nivola, David Oyelowo and Albert Brooks. Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zero’s Alex Ebert who previously scored the director’s All is Lost has composed the film’s original music.
