Only one new movie is opening this weekend:

winter-soldierGuaranteed to top the weekend box office is Captain America: The Winter Soldier directed by Anthony & Joe Russo and starring Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Anthony Mackie and Robert Redford. The film’s music is composed by Henry Jackman (X-Men: First Class, Wreck-It-Ralph. Hollywood Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music, as well as Marvin Gaye’s Trouble Man. Check out our previous article for the full album details. under-the-skinOpening in limited release is the Under the Skin directed by Jonathan Glazer, based on a novel by Michael Faber and starring Scarlett Johansson. Mica Levi from the experimental pop music band Micachu and the Shape has composed the film’s original music. Milan Records has released a soundtrack album featuring Levi’s score earlier this week. dom-hemingwayAlready playing in select theaters since Wednesday is the crime comedy Dom Hemingway directed by Richard Shepard and starring Jude Law, Richard E. Grant, Demian Bichir, Emilia Clarke, Kerry Condon, Jumayn Hunter and Madalina Ghenea. The film’s original score is composed by Rolfe Kent (Sideways, Mean Girls, Election). Metropolis Movie Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music, as well as songs by  from the film by artists including Citizen Cope, Chad Hobson and Big Country. island-of-lemursOpening in 37 IMAX theaters is the 3D documentary Island of Lemurs: Madagascar directed by David Douglas, narrated by Morgan Freeman and featuring scientist Patricia Wright. Mark Mothersbaugh (The Lego MovieCloudy With a Chance of Meatballs21 Jump Street) has composed the film’s original music. afflictedAnother limited release this weekend is the horror thriller Afflicted written and directed by Clif Prowse & Derek Lee and starring themselves, as well as Baya Rehaz, Benjamin Zeitoun, Zach Gray and Edo Van Breemen. The film’s original music is composed by Edo Van Breemen. No word on a soundtrack release. Afflicted follows two best friends who set out on the trip of a lifetime around the world and whose journey soon takes a dark and unexpected turn after an encounter with a beautiful woman in Paris leaves one of them mysteriously afflicted. The movie premiered at last year’s Fantastic Film Festival and is being released both in theaters and on VOD by CBS Films. To learn more about the thriller, visit the official movie website.

alan-partridgeAlso opening in limited release is the British comedy Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa directed by Declan Lowne and starring Steve Coogan, Colm Meaney, Sean Pertwee, Anna Maxwell Martin, Nigel Lindsay, Felicity Montagu, Simon Greenall and Phil Cornwell. Ilan Eshkeri (StardustLayer CakeThe Young Victoria) has composed the film’s original score. Rhino Records has released a soundtrack album featuring a suite from the composer’s score, as well as tracks by Philip Glass, The Police, Shirley Bassey, Bryan Ferry, Sparks and Hot Chocolate last year when the film opened overseas. unknown-knownAlready playing in limited release since Wednesday is the documentary The Unknown Known directed by Errol Morris (The Fog of War) about former United States Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and his role in American history from Watergate to 9/11. The film’s original music is composed by Danny Elfman (Spider-ManAlice in WonderlandBatman) who previously collaborated with the director on the doc Standard Operating Procedure. La-La Land Records has announced a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. The full details will be posted on this page within the next couple of days. The Unknown Known is being released by the Weinstein Company’s Radius label.

franke-and-aliceAlso opening in select cities is the indie drama Frankie & Alice directed by Geoffrey Sax and starring Halle Berry, Stellan Skarsgard, Phylicia Rashad, Chandra Wilson and Matt Frewer. Andrew Lockington (Journey to the Center of the EarthPercy Jackson: Sea of MonstersCity of Ember) has composed the film’s original music. The movie received an awards-qualifying release in 2010 and Berry was honored with a Golden Globe nomination for her lead performance. A soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music was announced at that time, but ended up never being released. Frankie & Alice follows a go-go dancer  with multiple personalities who struggles to remain her true self while fighting against two very unique alter egos: a seven-year-old child named Genius and a Southern white racist woman. in-the-bloodAlso opening in limited release is the action thriller In the Blood directed by John Stockwell and starring Gina Carrano, Cam Gigandet, Treat Williams, Luis Guzmán, Danny Trejo, Stephen Lang and Amaury Nolasco. The film’s original music is composed by Paul Haslinger (UnderworldThe Three Musketeers) who has previously scored Stockwell’s Into the BlueTuristas and Blue Crush. something-wickedAnother limited release is the thriller Something Wicked directed by Darin Scott and starring Brittany Murphy in her final role, as well as Shantel VanSanten, John Robinson and Julian Morris. Kyle Newmaster (Kinect Star WarsBlood Shot) has composed the film’s original music. Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score this past Tuesday. jinnAlso opening in select cities is the supernatural thriller Jinn written and directed by Ajmal Zaheer Ahmad and starring Dominic Rains, Ray Park, William Atherton, Faran Tahir and Serinda Swan. The film’s original music is composed by Noah Sorota (Falling Skies) who recorded his score with a full orchestra on the Eastwood Scoring Stage at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank. galapagos-affairOpening in New York before expanding to additional cities is the documentary The Galapagos Affair: Satan Came to Eden directed by Dayna Goldfine & Dan Geller and featuring voice performances of Cate Blanchett, Diane Kruger, Connie Nielsen and Josh Radnor. Laura Karpman (Taken miniseries, Black Nativity) has composed the film’s original score. Art Farm West Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the music of the Emmy Award-winning composer. hot-guys-with-gunsOpening today exclusively in Los Angeles is the crime comedy Hot Guys with Guns directed by Doug Spearman and starring Brian McArdle, Marc Anthony Samuel, Darryl Stephens, Kamar de los Reyes, Jay Huguley, Alan Blumenfeld, Joan Ryan and Trey McCurley. The film’s original music is composed by Grammy Award winner Mervyn Warren (Joyful NoiseThe Wedding PlannerA Walk to Remember) who is also executive producing the film and makes an appearance in the film. goodbye-worldAnother limited release this weekend is the indie drama Goodbye World directed by Denis Henry Hennelly and starring Kerry Bishé, Caroline Dhavernas, Adrian Grenier, Gaby Hoffmann, Ben McKenzie, Scott Mescudi, Remy Nozik and Mark Webber. Eric D. Johnson (Our Idiot Brother, SmashedCeremony) has composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been released. Goodbye World follows a group of estranged friends who reunite as civilization collapses. The drama premiered at last year’s Los Angeles Film Festival and is being released by Samuel Goldwyn and Phase 4 Films. The movie is also being released on VOD today.
