Film Fest Gent today announced the James Horner Tribute Concert, which will take place on October 17, 2024 in Muziekcentrum De Bijloke, where a selection of the legendary composer’s scores will be performed. Dirk Brossé will lead the Brussels Philharmonic in this musical celebration. Long time colleague and friend of Horner, Simon Franglen, is involved in the program’s curation and will be in attendance at the event. Franglen collaborated with Horner on such films as Titanic, Avatar and The Amazing Spider-Man and completed his score for The Magnificent Seven before composing the music for Avatar: The Way of Water, for which he won the WSA Discovery of the Year Award last year.

Volker Bertelmann Named Film Composer of the Year at World Soundtrack Awards
Volker Bertelmann was named Film Composer of the Year at the 23rd World Soundtrack Awards, tonight’s closing event of the 50th Ghent Film Festival, for his scores for Edward Berger’s All Quiet of the Western Front (for which he also received the Academy Award earlier this year), the Norwegian World War II drama War Sailor and Saara Saarela’s sci-fi drama Memory of Water. Nicholas Britell was honored as TV Composer of the Year today for his score for the fourth and final season of the HBO original series Succession and his music for the first season of Disney+’s Star Wars series Andor.
‘Laurence Rosenthal – Music for Film and Television’ Album Announced
Film Fest Gent has announced the new album Laurence Rosenthal – Music for Film and Television featuring music by recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s World Soundtrack Awards, including all-new studio recordings of selected scores by the composer performed by the Brussels Philharmonic and conducted by the festival’s music director Dirk Brossé. Titles featured on the album include Becket (for which he received an Academy Award nomination), The Miracle Worker, The Return of a Man Called Horse, Clash of the Titans and the miniseries Mussolini: The Untold Story.
2023 World Soundtrack Awards Nominations Announced
The World Soundtrack Academy has announced the nominees for the 2023 World Soundtrack Awards in the categories of Film Composer of the Year, Television Composer of the Year and Best Original Song. The winners will be announced at the 23rd World Soundtrack Awards ceremony, which will take place on October 21, 2023 at the Capitole Ghent as the closing night of the Film Fest Gent. Nicola Piovani and Laurence Rosenthal have previously been announced to receive Lifetime Achievement Awards and. The rest of the nominations will be revealed in September.
Jonny Greenwood Named Film Composer of the Year at World Soundtrack Awards
Jonny Greenwood was named Film Composer of the Year at the 22nd World Soundtrack Awards, tonight’s closing event of the 49th Ghent Film Festival, for his scores for Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog and Pablo Larrain’s Spencer. Nicholas Britell was honored as TV Composer of the Year today for his score for the third season of the HBO original series Succession. He previously won the award in the same category in 2020 and also won Film Composer of the Year in 2019, Discovery of the Year in 2017 and for Best Original Song in 2021.
World Soundtrack Awards Discovery of the Year and Public Choice Category Nominations Announced
Film Fest Gent and the World Soundtrack Academy have announced the second wave of nominees for the 2022 World Soundtrack Awards in the categories Discovery of the Year, Public Choice Award, Best Original Score for a Belgian Production and Sabam Award for Best Original Composition by a Young Composer. The winners will be announced at the World Soundtrack Awards & concert on Saturday, October 22 at the Ghent International Film Festival. ‘Mark Isham – Music for Film’ Album Announced
Film Fest Gent has announced the new album Mark Isham – Music for Film. The album features music by the guest of honor of this year’s World Soundtrack Awards, including studio recordings of concert suites from the composer’s scores for A River Runs Through It (for which he received his first Academy Award nomination), 42, American Crime, The Black Dahlia, Eight Below and this year’s The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, selections from Isham’s music from Judas and the Black Messiah and The Moderns & more. All music on this album is performed by the Brussels Philharmonic and conducted by Dirk Brossé.

The World Soundtrack Academy has announced the nominees for the 2022 World Soundtrack Awards in the categories of Film Composer of the Year, Television Composer of the Year and Best Original Song. The winners will be announced at the 22nd World Soundtrack Awards ceremony, which will take place at the renovated Concert Hall of Music Centre De Bijloke in Ghent on October 22, 2022. Mark Isham has previously been announced as guest of honor and Bruno Coulais will receive this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award. The rest of the nominations will be revealed in September.
Daniel Pemberton Named Film Composer of the Year at 2021 World Soundtrack Awards
Daniel Pemberton was named Film Composer of the Year at the 21st World Soundtrack Awards, tonight’s closing event of the 48th Ghent Film Festival, for his scores for Aaron Sorkins’ The Trial of the Chicago 7, Harry Bradbeer’s Enola Holmes and the documentary Rising Phoenix. He previously received his first World Soundtrack Award in the Discovery of the Year category back in 2014. Carlos Rafael Rivera was honored as TV Composer of the Year today for his score for the Netflix limited series The Queen’s Gambit (for which he recently received his second Emmy Award) and HBO’s Hacks.
Mychael Danna, Shigeru Umebyashi & Gabriel Yared ‘Music in Film’ Series Albums Announced
Film Fest Ghent has announced the expanded editions of three of its earlier albums, featuring music by Mychael Danna (Life of Pi, Moneyball, Capote), Shigeru Umebayashi (In the Mood for Love, House of Flying Daggers, A Single Man) and Gabriel Yared (The English Patient, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Cold Mountain) respectively, reissuing them in the Music for Film album series. The three albums have been updated with newly recorded music in collaboration with the composers, and will be released during the 48th edition of Film Fest Ghent, which will take place from October 12-23. All music is performed by Brussels Philharmonic and Vlaams Radiokoor and conducted by Film Fest Ghent music director Dirk Brossé.
