2021 World Soundtrack Awards Nominations Announced
The World Soundtrack Academy has announced the nominees for the 2021 World Soundtrack Awards in the categories of Film Composer of the Year, TV Composer of the Year and Best Original Song Written Directly for a Film. The winners will be announced at the 21st World Soundtrack Awards ceremony, which will take place in the Opera of Ghent on, October 23, 2021. Max Richter has previously been announced as guest of honor and Eleni Karaindrou will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award 2021. The rest of the nominations will be revealed in early September.
Hildur Guðnadóttir Named Film Composer of the Year at 2020 World Soundtrack Awards
Hildur Guðnadóttir was named Film Composer of the Year at the 20th World Soundtrack Awards, tonight’s closing event of the 47th Ghent Film Festival, for her score for Todd Phillips’ Joker, for which she also earned an Academy Award and Golden Globe earlier this year. She previously received the World Soundtrack Award in the TV Composer of the Year category last year. Last year’s Film Composer of the Year winner Nicholas Britell was selected as TV Composer of the Year today for his score for the second season of HBO’s Succession. Stand Up from Kasi Lemmon’s Harriet (written by Joshuah Brian Campbell & Cynthia Erivo) was named Best Original Song.
2020 World Soundtrack Awards Nominations Announced
The World Soundtrack Academy has announced the nominees for the 2020 World Soundtrack Awards in all categories , including Film Composer of the Year, TV Composer of the Year and Best Original Song Written Directly for a Film. The winners will be announced at the 20th anniversary edition of the World Soundtrack Awards, which will be be an online edition, live-streamed from Kinepolis Ghent on October 24, 2020. Among the previously announced guests at the ceremony are Alexandre Desplat, record holder of the World Soundtrack Film Composer of the Year Award, Gabriel Yared, who will receive a Lifetime Achievement, and Michael Abels, Discovery of the Year 2019.
‘World Soundtrack Awards: Tribute to the Film Composer’ Album Announced
Film Fest Ghent has announced the album World Soundtrack Awards: Tribute to the Film Composer, which features newly recorded pieces by all winners of the festival’s Film Composer of the Year Award, including Angelo Badalamenti, Nicholas Britell, Carter Burwell, Mychael Danna, Alexandre Desplat, Patrick Doyle, Michael Giacchino, Elliot Goldenthal, James Newton Howard, Alberto Iglesias, Jóhann Jóhannsson, John Williams and Gabriel Yared. Among the tracks is the premiere release of the main title track from Fear by Burwell and a suite from the unused score of Troy by Yared. Also included is the first-ever release of the World Soundtrack Awards Fanfare written by Elmer Bernstein and Tribute to the Film Composer, as well as an homage arranged by John Williams that brings together 23 different Oscar-winning or Oscar-nominated film themes.
Nicholas Britell Named Film Composer of the Year at 2019 World Soundtrack Awards
Nicholas Britell was named Film Composer of the Year at the 19th World Soundtrack Awards, tonight’s closing event of the 46th Ghent Film Festival. The composer’s film scoring work over the last year includes Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk (for which he also earned an Academy Award nomination) and Adam McKay’s Vice. Hildur Guðnadóttir received her first World Soundtrack Award in the TV Composer of the Year category for her score for HBO’s Chernobyl, for which she recently also won her first Emmy Award. Michael Abels (Us) was honored in the Discovery of the Year category.

Johann Johannsson Named Film Composer of the Year at 2018 World Soundtrack Awards
Johann Johannsson was named Film Composer of the Year at the 18th World Soundtrack Awards, tonight’s closing event of the 45th Ghent Film Festival. Among the late composer’s final scores released over the last year were Mandy, Mary Magdalene (co-scored with Hildur Guðnadóttir who accepted the award on his behalf) and The Mercy. He previously received the award last year in the same category. Tamar-kali received her first World Soundtrack Award in the Discovery of the Year category for her score from Dee Rees’ drama Mudbound. Ramin Djawadi was honored as TV Composer of the year for his work on HBO’s Game of Thrones & Westworld and FX’s The Strain. The Public Choice Award went to composer Laurent Eyquem for his score for Mark Pellington’s Nostalgia.
