The World Soundtrack Academy has announced the five nominees for the Discovery of the Year Award 2012, via which the organization rewards up-and-coming talent from the previous year. The winner will be announced at the 13th World Soundtrack Awards & Concert on October 19, 2013 in Ghent and will get the opportunity to perform at the 14th World Soundtrack Awards next year. World Soundtrack Awards Nominations Announced
The World Soundtrack Academy has announced the nominees for the 2013 World Soundtrack Awards to be presented in three categories: Film Composer of the Year, Best Original Score of the Year and Best Original Song Written Directly for a Film. The winners will be announced at the World Soundtrack Awards & concert on Saturday, October 19, the closing night of the Ghent International Film Festival. Here are the nominations:

Riz Ortolani to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award at Ghent Film Festival
Riz Ortolani has been selected as the 13th recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award at the the closing-night gala of the World Soundtrack Awards at the Ghent Film Fest on October 19, 2013. The Italian composer is best known for his scores to numerous spaghetti westerns and international films including the 1980 horror film Hannibal Holocaust and the British drama The 7th Dawn. Ortolani received a Grammy and an Academy Award nomination for the song More from the 1962 documentary Mondo Cane and was honored with another Oscar nomination for writing the title song for the 1970 western Madron. His music was recently featured in several films directed by Quentin Tarantino, including Django Unchained and Inglorious Basterds.
Alberto Iglesias Named Film Composer of the Year 2012 at World Soundtrack Awards
Alberto Iglesias was chosen as Film Composer of the Year 2012 at the World Soundtrack Awards 2012, tonight’s closing event of the 39th Ghent Film Festival. Iglesias also received an award for his score for Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy in the Best Original Film Score of the Year 2012 category. The composer’s other scores of the past year include The Monk (Le Moine) and Pedro Almadovar’s The Skin I Live In (La Piel Que Habito). In the Discovery of the Year category, Brian Byrne was awarded for his score for Rodrigo Garcia’s Albert Nobbs starring Glenn Close. The composer also received an award for the original song Lay Your Head Down from Albert Nobbs, which features lyrics by Glenn Close and is performed by Sinead O’Connor. The Public Choice Award went to Abel Korzeniowski for his music for Madonna’s W.E..

Pino Donaggio to Receive Lifetime Achievment Award at Ghent Film Festival
Pino Donaggio has been selected as the 12th recipient of the Lifetime Achievement award at the the closing-night gala of the World Soundtrack Awards at the Ghent Film Fest on October 20, 2012. The composer is best known for his collaborations with director Brian De Palma, which include such films as Dressed to Kill, Carrie and Blow Out, as well as the upcoming drama Passion. Among the composer that were previously honored with the award are John Barry, Marvin Hamlisch, Giorgio Moroder and Angelo Badalamenti. In addition, the music of James Newton Howard will also be celebrated at the 12th World Soundtrack Awards gala. The composer whose credits include The Sixth Sense, Signs, King Kong, The Fugitive, Michael Clayton and The Hunger Games, as well as the upcoming Snow White and the Huntsman and The Bourne Legacy was awarded as the Film Composer of the Year in 2008.
‘World Soundtrack Awards’ Winners Announced
The World Soundtrack Academy announced the winners of the World Soundtrack Awards 2011 at last night’s closing event of the 38th Ghent International Film Festival. Alexandre Desplat was chosen as Film Composer of the Year 2011. Hans Zimmer received the award for Best Orginal Film Score of the Year for Inception and Randy Newman was awarded for his song We Belong Together from Toy Story 3 in the Best Original Song Written for Film category. Alex Heffes received the Discovery of the Year Award for The First Grader & The Rite. The Public Choice Award went to A.R. Rahman for the film 127 hours. Among the composers in attendance at the event were Giorgio Moroder who was the recipient of the World Soundtrack Lifetime Achievement Award, as well as Gabriel Yared, Hans Zimmer, Elliot Goldenthal, Alexandre Desplat, Alex Heffes and Abel Korzeniowski.
