Michael Giacchino has been named Film Composer of the Year 2015 at the 15th World Soundtrack Awards, tonight’s closing event of the 42nd Ghent Film Festival. The composer’s output over the last year includes such titles as Inside Out, Tomorrowland, Jupiter Ascending and this year’s highest grossing film, Jurassic World. Giacchino previously received a World Soundtrack Award in the Discovery of a Year category back in 2006. In the Best Original Film Score of the Year category, Antonio Sanchez was honored for his score to this year’s Best Picture winner at the Academy Awards, Birdman: Or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance). The jazz drummer/composer also received the award in 2015’s Discovery of the Year category.

‘Ghent Film Festival & Brussels Philharmonic Present Alan Silvestri’ Compilation to Be Released
Silva Screen Records has announced a compilation album: Film Festival Gent and Brussels Philharmonic Present Alan Silvestri. The album features suites from several scores written by the Academy Award-nominated composer performed by the Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra and conducted by Dirk Brosse. Titles included on the album are Back to the Future, Forrest Gump, The Avengers, Cast Away, The Polar Express, The Mummy Express & more. The soundtrack marks the second in the series, which is supported by Ghent’s World Soundtrack Awards, where Silvestri will be honored this year. The soundtrack will be released on October 23, 2015 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon.
World Soundtrack Awards 2015 Discovery of the Year Nominations Announced
The World Soundtrack Academy has announced the five nominees for this year’s Discovery of the Year Award, via which the organization rewards up-and-coming talent from the previous year. The winner will be announced at the 15th World Soundtrack Awards & Concert on October 24, 2015 in Ghent, Belgium and will get the opportunity to perform at the 16th World Soundtrack Awards next year. Patrick Doyle to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award at World Soundtrack Awards
Patrick Doyle has been selected as the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement award at the closing-night gala of the 15th World Soundtrack Awards at the Ghent Film Fest on October 24, 2015. The composer is known for his various collaborations on films directed by Kenneth Branagh, including Henry V, Much Ado About Nothing, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Thor, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit and this year’s Cinderella. He received two Academy Award nominations for his music for Branagh’s Hamlet and Ang Lee’s Sense and Sensibility. His other film scoring credits include Pixar’s Brave, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Nanny McPhee, Bridget Jones’s Diary, Alfonso Cuaron’s Great Expectations, Robert Altman’s Gosford Park, Mike Newell’s Donnie Brasco and Brian DePalma’s Carlito’s Way.
World Soundtrack Awards 2015 Young Composers Contest Announced
As in previous years, the World Soundtrack Academy will give out the SABAM Award for Best Young International Composer to young international film music talent during this year’s World Soundtrack Awards (WSA) during the 42nd Film Fest Gent in Belgium. Three finalists will be invited for a three-day visit in Ghent where they will have their compositions performed by the Brussels Philharmonic and conducted by Dirk Brossé during the 15th World Soundtrack Awards, which takes place on October 25, 2015 and will also honor composers Alan Silvestri and Daniel Pemberton. They will also have the opportunity to meet with film music professionals and compete for a €2,500 prize.
Alan Silvestri to Be Honored at World Soundtrack Awards 2015
Alan Silvestri has been chosen as this year’s guest of honor at this year’s World Soundtrack Awards. The composer’s music will be performed at the 15th anniversary edition of the event, conducted by Dirk Brossé and accompanied by film fragments on the big screen, during the 42nd Ghent Film Festival on October 24, 2015. Silvestri’s credits include numerous collaborations with director Robert Zemeckis including the Back to the Future trilogy, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Romancing the Stone, Cast Away, The Polar Express, Contact, Flight and Forrest Gump, which earned him an Academy Award nomination. He also scored such films as Marvel’s The Avengers & Captain America: The First Avenger, the animated feature The Croods, the Night at the Museum trilogy, James Cameron’s The Abyss and The Mummy Returns.
Alexandre Desplat Named Film Composer of the Year at World Soundtrack Awards 2014
Alexandre Desplat was chosen as Film Composer of the Year 2014 at the World Soundtrack Awards 2012, tonight’s closing event of the 41st Ghent Film Festival. Desplat also received an award for his score for Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel in the Best Original Film Score of the Year category. Desplat also composed the music for such films as Gareth Edward’s Godzilla, George Clooney’s The Monuments Men and Stephen Frears’ Philomena over the past year. The composer previously was named Film Composer of the Year in 2007, 2009 and 2011. In the Discovery of the Year category, Daniel Pemberton was awarded for his work over the last year, which included his scores for Ridley Scott’s The Counselor and the comedy Cuban Fury. In the Best Original Song category, Pharrell Williams was honored for his Oscar-nominated song Happy from Despicable Me 2.

Francis Lai to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award at Ghent Film Festival
Francis Lai has been selected as the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement award at the closing-night gala of the 14th World Soundtrack Awards at the Ghent Film Fest on October 25, 2014. The composer is best known for his score for 1970’s Love Story, for which he received an Academy Award, as well as a Golden Globe and Grammy Award nomination. His other scoring credits include such titles as A Man and a Woman, Bilitis, Live for Life and Dark Eyes. Selections of the composer’s music will be performed live by the Brussels Philharmonic conducted by Dirk Brosse at the event. Among the composers that were previously honored with the award are John Barry, Marvin Hamlisch, Pino Donaggio Giorgio Moroder and Angelo Badalamenti. In addition, Jef Neve’s music for the Flemish drama series In Flanders Fields will also be performed at the World Soundtrack Awards, accompanied by footage from the show.
