The movie is based on the novel of the same title by Ian McEwan (Atonement, On Chesil Beach, The Good Son) and follows an eminent High Court judge in London who is forced to deal with the case of a brilliant boy who, three months from his 18th birthday and still legally a child, is refusing the blood transfusion that will save his life. McEwan also wrote the screenplay.
