Randy Newman revealed in an interview with The Advertiser that he is set to compose the music for Pixar’s upcoming animated feature Cars 3. Owen Wilson is expected to return to voice Lightning McQueen, while Larry the Cable Guy is expected to reprise his role as Mater. No plot details have been revealed yet, but the film is said to feature a tribute to Hayao Miyazaki’s movie The Castle of Cagliostro. No director has been announced, but John Lasseter who directed the first two parts will be producing the project. Newman previously scored 2006’s original cars film, while Michael Giacchino composed the music for the 2011 sequel.

‘Toy Story’ Legacy Collection Soundtrack Details
The details of the Walt Disney Records Legacy Collection release for Pixar Studios’ 1995 feature Toy Story have been revealed. The album features the film’s complete original score and the movie’s original songs composed by Randy Newman (Monsters, Inc., A Bug’s Life, Cars, Seabiscuit, Avalon). Also featured on a second disc are various piano/vocal demos and instrumental versions of the songs. The 2-CD set will be released on July 10, 2015 to coincide with the film’s 20th anniversary and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Toy Story is directed by John Lasseter and features the voices of Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Don Rickles, Jim Varney, Wallace Shawn, John Ratzenberger and Annie Potts.
‘Montage – Great Film Composers and the Piano’ Album Announced
Harmonia Mundi has announced the release of Montage – Great Film Composers and the Piano. The album features the piano works composed by six major film composers and performed by pianist Gloria Cheng. Among the pieces are original compositions by John Williams (Star Wars, E.T.), Michael Giacchino (Up, Lost) and Randy Newman (Toy Story, The Natural) who composed a piece in homage to Alfred, Emil and Lionel Newman, as well as Bruce Broughton (Silverado) and Don Davis (The Matrix). Also included is a piece from Alexandre Desplat‘s Trois Études (originally written for pianist Lang Lang). Randy Newman to Receive Max Steiner Award
Randy Newman has been chosen as the recipient of this year’s Max Steiner Film Music Achievement Award, which will be presented at the annual Hollywood in Vienna Concert at Vienna Concert Hall on September 25, 2014. The Max Steiner Award honors extraordinary achievements within the genre of film music by the musical capital of Austria, Vienna. Previous recipients of the honor include James Horner, Alan Silvestri, Howard Shore, Lalo Schifrin and John Barry. Newman has written numerous songs and scores for films such as Ragtime, The Natural, A Bug’s Life, Cars, Parenthood, the Toy Story trilogy, Seabiscuit, Avalon and Meet the Parents.
Original Piano Works by John Williams, Randy Newman and Michael Giacchino to Performed Live in Concert
Piano Spheres, the solo piano series whose mission is committed to introduce major new works for the piano, has announced this year’s opening concert. On November 12, Grammy-winning pianist Gloria Cheng will perform the world premieres of several original piano works by major film composers for the Opening Night program, entitled Montage. Academy Award-winning composers John Williams (Star Wars, Schindler’s List), Michael Giacchino (Up, Star Trek) and Randy Newman (Toy Story, Monsters, Inc.) who composed a piece in homage to Alfred, Emil and Lionel Newman, are featured on the program, as well as Bruce Broughton (Silverado) and Don Davis (The Matrix). The concert will also feature the U.S. premiere of Alexandre Desplat‘s Trois Études (originally written for pianist Lang Lang).

Two new movies are opening wide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is Pixar’s animated film sequel Monsters University directed by Dan Scanion and featuring the voice talent of Billy Crystal, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi Jennifer Tilly, Frank Oz, John Ratzenberger and Kelsey Grammer. The film’s music is composed by Randy Newman who previously scored 2001’s Monsters, Inc. Walt Disney Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as track from Axwell & Sebastian Ingrosso of the electronic music trio Swedish House Mafia. Walt Disney Records to Release Soundtracks for ‘The Lone Ranger’ and ‘Monsters University’
Walt Disney Records will release the soundtrack albums for two of this summer’s most anticipated movies. First up is a soundtrack album for the western The Lone Ranger directed by Gore Verbinski and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. The film’s music is composed by Hans Zimmer. The soundtrack is set to be released on June 25, 2013 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. The Lone Ranger stars Armie Hammer in the film’s title role of the masked crime fighter and Johnny Depp stars as his Native American sidekick from the popular 1950s TV series. Helena Bonham Carter, Tom Wilkinson, William Fichtner and Barry Pepper are co-starring.

Opening today is the thriller Jack Reacher directed by Christopher McQuarrie and starring Tom Cruise, Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins, Werner Herzog, David Oyelowo and Robert Duvall. The film’s music is composed by Joe Kraemer who previously scored the director’s 2000 film The Way of the Gun. La-La Land Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score digitally earlier this week. The release date for the physical version is set for early January. Also opening today is the comedy drama This is 40 written and directed by Judd Apatow and starring Paul Rudd, Leslie Mann, John Lithgow, Megan Fox, Iris Apatow, Maude Apatow, Melissa McCarthy, Jason Segel, Robert Smigel, Charlyne Yi and Albert Brooks. The film’s original score is composed by Jon Brion (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind). A soundtrack album featuring one score track by the composer, as well as the film’s songs by artists including Norah Jones, Fiona Apple, Graham Parker and Lindsey Buckingham (all produced by Jon Brion), Wilco and Ryan Adams has been released on Capitol Records. Randy Newman to Score ‘Monsters University’
Randy Newman has confirmed in a recent interview with Laughing Place at the world premiere of Pixar’s Brave in Hollywood that he will be returning to score the studio’s next animated feature Monsters University. The composer previously scored the original 2001 Monsters, Inc. film, for which he received his first Academy Award for the song If I Didn’t Have You and was also nominated for his score. During the interview, Newman mentions that he will also be writing a new song for the prequel. Check out the interview, as well as the film’s teaser trailer after the jump.
