Justin Hurwitz has won the Grammy Award for his music for Damien Chazelle’s La La Land in the Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media category. The other nominated composers in the category included Hans Zimmer (Dunkirk), Johann Johannsson (Arrival), Ramin Djawadi (Game of Thrones: Season 7) and Benjamin Wallfisch, Pharrell Williams & Zimmer (Hidden Figures). In the Best Song Written For Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media, Lin-Manuel Miranda won the award for the song How Far I’ll Go from Disney’s animated feature Moana.

Johann Johannsson Named Film Composer of the Year at World Soundtrack Awards
Johann Johannsson has been named Film Composer of the Year at the 17th World Soundtrack Awards, tonight’s closing event of the 44th Ghent Film Festival for his score for Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival. He was previously nominated in the category in 2015. Nicholas Britell received his first World Soundtrack Award in the Discovery of the Year category for his Academy Award-nominated score from Moonlight. Rupert Gregson-Williams was honored as TV Composer of the year for his work on the Netflix original series The Crown.
‘La La Land in Concert: A Live-to-Film Celebration’ Announced
Lionsgate today announced that the world premiere of La La Land in Concert: A Live-to-Film Celebration will take place at the Hollywood Bowl on Memorial Day weekend Friday, May 26 and Saturday, May 27. Composer Justin Hurwitz will conduct his Academy Award-winning score for Damien Chazelle’s hit film musical and song City of Stars (with lyrics by Benj Pasek &Justin Paul) performed live-to-film by a 100-piece symphony orchestra, choir, and Jazz ensemble, accompanying the film’s original vocal recordings. Tickets will go on sale on Friday, March 10 at 12:00pm PST at Ticketmaster and the Hollywood Bowl box office.

The other nominated composers in the Best Original Score category were Mica Levi (Jackie), Dustin O’Halloran & Hauschka (Lion), Nicholas Britell (Moonlight) and Thomas Newman (Passengers). Hurwitz also received a second Oscar for the original song City of Stars from the movie musical and shared the honor with lyricists Justin Paul and Benj Pasek.
‘La La Land’ – The Complete Musical Experience to Be Released
Interscope Records will release a new soundtrack album for Damien Chazelle’s hit musical La La Land. The album features the songs from the movie composed by Justin Hurwitz with lyrics by Benj Pasek & Justin Paul, as well as Hurwitz’s score as featured on the previous official soundtrack and score release. Also included and previously unreleased are D.A. Wallach’s cover versions of Take On Me & I Ran as featured in the movie, a track by Ryan Gosling character’s band The Messengers, Eddie Wakes’ Silent Night arranged by Hurwitz, source cues by Thelonious Monk, as well new versions of Audition and John Legend’s Start a Fire. The soundtrack will be released digitally tomorrow and will be available to download on Amazon.
Justin Hurwitz Wins BAFTA Award for ‘La La Land’
Justin Hurwitz has received his first BAFTA Award for his score for Damien Chazelle’s La La Land in the Original Music category today at the ceremony at the Orange British Academy Film Awards ceremony at the Royal Opera House in London. The composer accepted his award in person at the event. Check out his acceptance speech after the jump. He was nominated alongside Johann Johannsson (Arrival), Mica Levi (Jackie), Dustin O’Halloran & Hauschka (Lion) and Abel Korzeniowski (Nocturnal Animals). The composer previously received two Golden Globes for both his score and the song City of Stars from the movie and has received three Academy Award nominations for his work on the film.
‘Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench’ Soundtrack to Be Released
Milan Records has announced the world premiere soundtrack release for Damien Chazelle’s 2009 musical movie Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench. The album features the music from the film composed by Academy Award nominee Justin Hurwitz (La La Land, Whiplash) and featuring lyrics by Chazelle. The soundtrack will be released digitally on February 24, 2017 and physically in March. Visit Amazon to pre-order the CD. Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench is written and directed by Chazelle and stars Jason Palmer, Desiree Garcia and Sandha Khin. The movie tells the story of a young couple, an up-and-coming trumpeter and an aimless introvert, whose relationship falls apart as the glow of their new love fades.
