Opening in nationwide this weekend is the musical drama West Side Story directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Ansel Elgort, Rachel Zegler, Ariana DeBose, Mike Faist, Josh Andrés Rivera, David Alvarez, Corey Stoll, Brian d’Arcy James, Ana Isabelle and Rita Moreno. The film’s music was originally written for the stage musical of the same title by Leonard Bernstein (with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim) and has been adapted by David Newman (Anastasia, Ice Age, Serenity, The Flintstones). Gustavo Dudamel conducted the New York and Los Angeles Philharmonic. Hollywood Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs and score from the movie last week. Also opening wide is the sports drama National Champions directed by Ric Roman Waugh and starring Stephan James, J.K. Simmons, Alexander Ludwig, Tim Blake Nelson, Timothy Olyphant, Uzo Aduba, Lil Rel Howery, Jeffrey Donovan, Russell Wilson, Andrew Bachelor, Kristin Chenoweth and David Koechner. Jonathan Sanford (Teenage Bounty Hunters, Good on Paper, As We See It, Dare Me, Social Distance) has composed the film’s original music. Sony Classical has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score today.
